MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios
The unauthorized, behind-the-scenes story of the most popular, lucrative, and transformative cultural phenomenon of our time: the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Entertainment was a struggling toymaker not even twenty years ago. Today, Marvel Studios is the dominant player both in Hollywood and in global pop culture. But what accounts for its stunning rise?
In MCU, beloved culture writers Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards draw on more than a hundred interviews with actors, producers, directors, and writers to present the definitive chronicle of Marvel Studios and its sole, ongoing production, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As they delve into the studio's key moments - from the contentious hiring of Robert Downey Jr. for Iron Man to the negotiations over Disney's acquisition of Marvel to studio head Kevin Feige's embrace of streaming TV - the authors demonstrate that the genius of Marvel was its resurrection and modification of Hollywood's old studio system. Dishy and authoritative, MCU is the first book to tell the Marvel Studios story in full - and an essential, effervescent account of popular culture.

The Story of a Life
In 1943, Konstantin Paustovsky, the Soviet Union's most revered author, started out on his masterwork - The Story of a Life; a grand, novelistic memoir of a life lived on the fast-unfurling frontiers of Russian history. Eventually published over six volumes, it would cement Paustovsky's reputation as the voice of Russia around the world, and see him nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Newly translated by Guggenheim fellow Douglas Smith, Vintage Classics are proud to reintroduce the first three books of Paustovsky's epic for a whole new generation. Taking its reader from Paustovsky's Ukrainian youth, struggling with a family on the verge of collapse and the first flourishes of creative ambition, to his experiences working as a paramedic on Russia's frontlines and then as a journalist covering the country's violent spiral into revolution, The Story of a Life offers a portrait of an artistic journey like no other.
As richly dramatic as the great Russian novels of the 19th and 20th centuries, but all the more powerful for its first-hand testament to one of history's most chaotic eras, The Story of Life is a uniquely dazzling achievement of modern literature.

In The Land Of Retinal Deligh
Since 1994, Juxtapoz Magazine, published in San Francisco, has provided a forum for so called Lo-Brow art-work inspired by comics, hot rods, and popular culture --and has become, in the years since, the most widely read art magazine in the United States. Juxtapoz provides a voice and validation for a brand of artist, like founder Robert Williams, Mark Ryden, Coop, Camille Rose Garcia, Glen Barr, the Clayton Brothers, Isabel Samaras, Joe Coleman, and many, many others, who have not historically been accepted by the typical art-world infrastructure of collector, curator, and critic. However, since its founding, it has become the leverage point for the creation of its own infrastructure that supports Juxtapozian art with galleries around the world, collectors, increasing critical attention, and museum exhibitions at adventurous institutions. This exciting and provocative collection presents a group of artists who rejected traditional rules of the art establishment and created their own canon, known as the Juxtapoz School. Published in conjunction with the Laguna Art Museum for the 2008 exhibition In the Land of Retinal Delights.

The Reluctant Dragon
The Reluctant Dragon is an 1898 children's story by Kenneth Grahame (originally published as a chapter in his book Dream Days), which served as the key element to the 1941 feature film with the same name from Walt Disney Productions. The story has also been set to music as a children's operetta by John Rutter, with words by David Grant. The story takes place in the Berkshire Downs in Oxfordshire (where the author lived and where, according to legend, St George did fight a dragon). It is Grahame's most famous short story. It is arguably much more well-known than Dream Days itself or the related The Golden Age. It can be seen as a prototype to most modern stories in which the dragon is a sympathetic character rather than a threat. In Grahame's story, a young boy discovers an erudite, mushroom-loving dragon living in the Downs above his home. The two become friends, but soon afterwards the dragon is discovered by the townsfolk, who send for St George to rid them of it.
