Underground Time
Everyday Mathilde takes the Metro, then the commuter train to the office of a large multi-national where she works in the marketing department. Every day, the same routine, the same trains. But something happened a while ago - she dared to voice a different opinion from her moody boss, Jacques. Bit by bit she finds herself frozen out of everything, with no work to do. Thibault is a paramedic. Every day he drives to the addresses he receives from his controller. The city spares him no grief: traffic jams, elusive parking spaces, delivery trucks blocking his route. He is well aware that he may be the only human being many of the people he visits will see for the entire day and is well acquainted with the symptomatic illnesses, the major disasters, the hustle and bustle and, of course, the immense, pervading loneliness of the city. Before one day in May, Mathilde and Thibault had never met. They were just two anonymous figures in a crowd, pushed and shoved and pressured continuously by the loveless, urban world. Underground Time is a novel of quiet violence - the violence of office-bullying, the violence of the brutality of the city - in which our two characters move towards an inevitable meeting. 'Two solitary existences cross paths in this poignant chronicle, a new testimony to de Vigan's superb eloquence' Lire

We Bought a Zoo
A film tie-in edition to 20th Century Fox's film adaptation of the heart-warming international bestseller starring Scarlett Johansson and Matt Damon and directed by Oscar-winning director Cameron Crowe. An amazing true story that has inspired the major Hollywood motion picture this Christmas, to be repackaged for release alongside the film. We Bought a Zoo is about one young family, a broken down zoo, and the wild animals that changed their lives forever. When Ben [played by Damon] and his wife Katherine [played by Johansson] sold their small flat in Primrose Hill, upped sticks with their children and invested their savings into a dilapidated zoo on the edge of Dartmoor, they were prepared for a challenge and a momentous change in all their lives. With over 200 exotic animals to care for - including an African lion, a wolf pack, a Brazilian tapir and a jaguar - Ben's hands, and those of his wife, children and tiny team of keepers, were full. What they weren't prepared for was Katherine's devastating second brain cancer diagnosis. Ben found himself juggling the daunting responsibilities of managing the park's staff and finances, while holding the bailiffs at bay and caring for his wife. A moving and entertaining story of courage and a family's attempts to rebuild a zoo, and carry on after Katherine's tragic death.

Dewey: The Small-Town Library-Cat Who Touched the World
The story of how one adorable and lovably roguish library cat touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with. On the coldest morning of the year, Vicki Myron found a tiny, bedraggled kitten almost frozen to death in the night drop box of the library where she worked, and her life - and the town of Spencer, Iowa - would never be the same. Vicki was a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm and an alcoholic, abusive husband. But her biggest challenge as the new head librarian in Spencer was to raise the spirits of a small, out-of-the-way town mired deep in the farm crisis of the 1980s. Dewey, as the townspeople named the kitten, quickly grew into a strutting, adorable library cat whose antics kept patrons in stitches, and whose sixth sense about those in need created hundreds of deep and loving friendships. As his fame grew, people drove hundreds of miles to meet Dewey, and people all over the world fell in love with him. Through it all, Dewey remained a loyal companion, a beacon of hope not just for Vicki, but for the entire town of Spencer as it slowly, steadily pulled itself up from the worst financial crisis in its long history. Dewey won hearts and proved to everyone he encountered that unconditional love comes in many forms.

Amerikai Psycho
Ennek a felforgató szövegnek a mai napig véres élmény boldog születésnapot kívánni.

A Nemnövekedés diszkrét bája
"... az utóbbi évtizedben számos olyan civilkezdeményezés jött létre, amely a fenntartható, igazságos és a gyakorlatban is megvalósítható megoldásokat keres a globalizálódó világ sokszoros válságára. A nemnövekedés is egyfajta mozgalomként terjedt el Franciaországban a második évezred elején, követői radikális és kritikus szemlélettel viszonyulnak a Föld erőforrásainak véges voltát figyelmen kívül hagyó, korlátlan növekedésen alapuló, termelésközpontú, elidegenedett fogyasztói társadalmunkhoz. Hiszen a nemnövekedés valójában egy provokatív elnevezése mindannak a filozófiai elgondolásnak és a gyakorlatban is megvalósítható kísérletnek, melynek segítségével rátalálhatunk egy olyan új szempontokon alapuló társadalmi berendezkedésre, amely a föld természeti erőforrásaival bölcsen gazdálkodik ahelyett, hogy a végtelenségig kihasználná azokat, élhető kereteket teremtve mind kortársaink, mind a jövő nemzedékek számára. A nemnövekedés tehát nem maga a cél, hanem egyfajta eszköz, átmenet egy új társadalmi berendezkedés felé."

Scandinavian Baking
Here are authentic Scandinavian recipes with a modern twist, shot on location in Scandinavia. The book is suffused with 'hygge', a Danish word that has no English equivalent but means cosiness, or relaxing with friends over good food and drink. Trine Hahnemann is the leading authority on Scandinavian baking, and here she holds the hand of the uninitiated baker and leads them through the mysteries of baking bread, always with an eye to the practicalities of creating great bread at home. Here you will find no complicated recipes, or sourdough starters that need as much tending as a baby. Instead, Trine teaches us how we can fit the making of bread into our busy lives, without compromising on quality. Scandinavian crispbreads abound, as do savoury tarts and recipes from the smorrebrod. And then there's the sweet baking - a recipe for each kind of Danish pastry you could ever wish for, a cookie for every occasion, and mouth-watering layer cakes, coffee cakes and cream buns. The Midsummer and Christmas festivities are built around the making of cakes, cookies and breads of all sorts, and the baking celebrations of both seasons are included in the book. Throughout the book, Trine writes about the baking world in Scandinavia: the tradition of the 'cake table' party; how spices came to the frozen north; or how using older strains of grain will boost the nutritional worth of your daily bread.

Középiskolások
"Szilvási Lajos bőséges életművének egy eddig csak nehezen hozzáférhető darabját tartja a kezében az olvasó. Gyűjtők féltve őrzött kötete a Középiskolások, a szerző első regénye. Mindössze 18 éves, amikor a SZOT József Attila regénypályázatára beadja művét, amit meg is nyer.
Míg a szerző könyvei később százezres tételben jelentek meg több kiadásban és utánnyomásban is, ez a könyve még csak kis példányszámban került boltokba. Így sok, könyvespolcokon őrzött Szilvási-sorozatból hiányzik ez a kötet. Most a gyűjtők és a rajongók kérésére újra kiadjuk a Középiskolásokat. Reméljük, hogy a könyv kiadásával örömet okozunk Szilvási Lajos regényeit kedvelők népes táborának."

The Paying Guests
There came the splash of water and the rub of heels as Mrs Barber stepped into the tub. After that there was a silence, broken only by the occasional echoey plink of drips from the tap...'Frances had been picturing her lodgers in purely mercenary terms - as something like two great waddling shillings. But this, she thought, was what it really meant to have paying guests: this odd, unintimate proximity, this rather peeled-back moment, where the only thing between herself and a naked Mrs Barber was a few feet of kitchen and a thin scullery door. An image sprang into her head: that round flesh, crimsoning in the heat.' It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned, the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers. For with the arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, a modern young couple of the 'clerk class', the routines of the house will be shaken up in unexpected ways. And as passions mount and frustration gathers, no one can foresee just how far-reaching, and how devastating, the disturbances will be. This is vintage Sarah Waters: beautifully described with excruciating tension, real tenderness, believable characters, and surprises. It is above all a wonderful, compelling story.
Way to Go
"Is it possibly to write a stunning book about infrastructure? Kate Ascher's books are bliss... Using gorgeous graphics and clear, simple, language, Ascher explains the infrastructure and engineering marvels around us." --Slate.com In our digital age, it's easy to forget that almost everything we enjoy about modern life depends on motion. We ride in cars and on buses and trains to work; enjoy food shipped over oceans; fly high in the sky to any point on the planet. Over the last century, the world has come to rely on its ability to move just about anywhere effortlessly. But what prompted this transformation? What inventions allowed it to happen? And how do the vehicles and systems that keep us in motion today--airports, trains, cars, and satellites--really work? Exploring our incredible interconnected world is the task of Kate Ascher's "The Way to Go: Moving by Sea, Land, and Air." Lusciously illustrated and meticulously researched, "The Way to Go" reveals the highly complex and largely invisible network of global transportation. How is cargo moved from inland factory to seaside port, and how is it transferred from shore to ship? How do ships and planes navigate their routes without landmarks? What happens under the hood of a car or in the undercarriage of a people mover? How did planes become cheaper than ships or trains? Why are some spaceships reusable and others not? What tools are needed to build today's immense bridges and tunnels, and what ensures they don't collapse? How does a helicopter really stay aloft? What happens when lightning strikes an airplane or when one satellite crashes with another? What will the car of tomorrow look like? Focusing on the machines that underpin our lives, Ascher's "The Way to Go" also introduces the systems that keep those machines in business--the emergency communication networks that connect ships at sea, the automated tolling mechanisms that maintain the flow of highway traffic, the air control network that keeps planes from colliding in the sky. Equally fascinating are the technologies behind these complex systems: baggage tag readers that make sure people's bags go where they need to; automated streetlights that adjust their timing based on traffic flow; GPS devices that pinpoint where we are on earth at any second. Together these technologies move more people farther, faster, and more cheaply than at any other time in history. As our lives and our businesses become more entwined with others across the globe, there has never been a better time to understand how transportation works. Indispensable and unforgettable, Kate Ascher's "The Way to Go" is a gorgeous graphic guide to a world moving as never before.
Duchamp
Readymade man Changing the course of 20th-century art When is a urinal no longer a urinal? When Marcel Duchamp (1887 1968) declared it to be art. The uproar that greeted the French artist s Fountain (1917), a porcelain urinal installed in a gallery, sent shock waves through the art world establishment that continue to reverberate to the present day. Duchamp made a career out of challenging our notions of what art is and, in the process, opened our minds to hitherto unknown possibilities. After an oblique version of Cubism in his early career, the artist made his name with Nude Descending a Staircase (1912), a groundbreaking blend of abstraction, Cubism, and Futurism, with a controversially mechanical titular nude. Around the same time, Duchamp began his forays into the now-iconic readymades seemingly random found objects which Duchamp would present as art, including Bicycle Wheel (1913), Bottle Rack (1914), and a snow shovel, labeled Prelude to a Broken Arm (1915). Duchamp went on to cause even further apoplexy among traditionalists with outrages such as L.H.O.O.Q. (1919), in which he presented a cheap copy of da Vinci s Mona Lisa with a mustache and beard penciled on and, for good measure, the auditory pun of the title (which, when read aloud in French, sounds like Elle a chaud au cul She has a hot ass ). This book distills all the daring and the scandal of Duchamp s art into one essential overview which introduces not only one pioneering creative but also a critical moment in Western art. It is here, amid the assaults on Old Masters and the fractured poetry of found objects, that the art world first transitioned from retinal experiences to what would evolve into conceptual practice.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions"
