How to Make the World Add Up
'If you aren't in love with stats before reading this book, you will be by the time you're done. Powerful, persuasive, and in these truth-defying times, indispensable'
Caroline Criado Perez, author of Invisible Women
'Fabulously readable, lucid, witty and authoritative... Every politician and journalist should be made to read this book, but everyone else will get so much pleasure and draw so much strength from the joyful way it dispels the clouds of deceit and delusion'
Stephen Fry
When was the last time you read a grand statement, accompanied by a large number, and wondered whether it could really be true? Statistics are vital in helping us tell stories - we see them in the papers, on social media, and we hear them used in everyday conversation - and yet we doubt them more than ever.
But numbers - in the right hands - have the power to change the world for the better. Contrary to popular belief, good statistics are not a trick, although they are a kind of magic. Good statistics are not smoke and mirrors; in fact, they help us see more clearly. Good statistics are like a telescope for an astronomer, a microscope for a bacteriologist, or an X-ray for a radiologist. If we are willing to let them, good statistics help us see things about the world around us and about ourselves - both large and small - that we would not be able to see in any other way.
In How to Make the World Add Up, Tim Harford draws on his experience as both an economist and presenter of the BBC's radio show 'More or Less'. He takes us deep into the world of disinformation and obfuscation, bad research and misplaced motivation to find those priceless jewels of data and analysis that make communicating with numbers worthwhile. Harford's characters range from the art forger who conned the Nazis to the stripper who fell in love with the most powerful congressman in Washington, to famous data detectives such as John Maynard Keynes, Daniel Kahneman and Florence Nightingale. He reveals how we can evaluate the claims that surround us with confidence, curiosity and a healthy level of scepticism.
Using ten simple rules for understanding numbers - plus one golden rule - this extraordinarily insightful book shows how if we keep our wits about us, thinking carefully about the way numbers are sourced and presented, we can look around us and see with crystal clarity how the world adds up.

Do Nothing
We work feverishly to make ourselves happy. So why are we so miserable? This manifesto helps us break free of our unhealthy devotion to efficiency and shows us how to reclaim our time and humanity with a little more leisure.
'This book is so important and could truly save lives . . . With intelligence and compassion, Headlee presents realistic solutions for how we can reclaim our health and our humanity from a technological revolution that seems hell-bent on destroying both. I'm so grateful to have read this book. It delivers on its promise of a better life' - Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of Big Magic and Eat, Pray, Love
Despite our constant search for new ways to 'hack' our bodies and minds for peak performance, human beings are working more instead of less, living harder not smarter, and becoming more lonely and anxious. We strive for the absolute best in every aspect of our lives, ignoring what we do well naturally. Why do we measure our time in terms of efficiency instead of meaning? Why can't we just take a break?
In Do Nothing, award-winning journalist Celeste Headlee illuminates a new path ahead, seeking to institute a global shift in our thinking so we can stop sabotaging our well-being, put work aside and start living instead of doing.
The key lies in embracing what makes us human: our creativity, our social connections (Instagram doesn't count), our ability for reflective thought, and our capacity for joy. Celeste's strategies will allow you to regain control over your life and break your addiction to false efficiency, including:
-Increase your time perception and determine how your hours are being spent.
-Stop comparing yourself to others.
-Invest in quality idle time. Take a hot bath and listen to music.
-Spend face-to-face time with friends and family
It's time to recover our leisure time and reverse the trend that's making us all sadder, sicker, and less productive.

Home Handbook
When did we lose the knack of looking after our own homes? We have become dependent on 5-in-1 chemical cleaners; we can't seem to wield a Hoover anymore; and descaling the kettle is a task to be indefinitely delayed. Somewhere along the way we have lost the domestic tradition that was simple, quick and effective. The Home Handbook seeks to redress the balance and celebrates the art of caring for your home in the most environmentally-friendly, fuss-free way. Learn how to ...fold a fitted sheet, wash a wallpapered wall, clean shower curtains, unblock a toilet, make your own home-made window cleaner, care for duvets, clean pearls, remove scratches from a wooden table, spot-remove a stain, clean and defrost a freezer, remove heel marks from stone floors, use lemon juice around the house, use bicarb on pots and pans, get red wine out of a carpet, polish wooden furniture, clean really filthy brass, clean a really filthy oven, make cut flowers last longer ...run the modern home.

Brand Vandals
Thanks to the rise of social media, what audiences think and say about organisations has never been more critical. Steve Earl and Stephen Waddington's Brand Anarchy examined the impact of media change and the new reputation landscape brought about by disaffected shareholders, customers and staff voicing their opinions to a global Internet audience. The authors continue the story here with the brand vandals going one step further; mobilising themselves, and the Internet, to wage war on organisations and willfully cause lasting reputational damage. For the organisation, engagement isn't an option - it's a necessity. Brand vandals are forcing a level of dialogue that organisations, public and private, have never had to contemplate before. Smart organisations are helping to define the future of modern brand communication by retooling their public relations and communications teams to truly get to grips with the challenge of engaging audiences in a 24/7 conversation that not only answers criticism, but positively rebuilds corporate reputation. Is your organisation ready for the brand vandals?

False Alarm
With hurricanes battering coast lines, sea level rise threatening entire countries with extinction and wildfires raging across broad swaths of America and the planet, it is hardly surprising that countering global warming has become a top priority for the developing world. In ten years, we have gone from arguing about whether climate change is real to wagering on how soon it will actually extinguish planet Earth. David Wallace-Wells' book The Uninhabitable Earth tops bestseller lists and Greta Thunberg is an international hero.
Children panic about their future, and adults wonder if it is even ethical to bring new life into the world. Enough, argues political scientist and bestselling author Bjorn Lomborg. Climate change, while real, is not the apocalyptic threat that we've been told it is.
There is no scientific evidence, for instance, that the world is suffering from more droughts, wildfires, or hurricanes than ever before. In fact, global death due the natural disaster is at an all-time low. The real problem is that with increasing affluence, more people are moving to riskier parts of the world - coastlines, areas with high wildfire risk - and building more expensive property there.
So the costs of natural disasters are rising, even though their incidence isn't - contributing to the impression that the world has become a far more dangerous place. Climate panic is based on bad science, and generates even worse policy. Around the world, we are currently spending about $500 billion annually on environmental issues and, with the many promises of zero carbon emissions soon, those costs could escalate to $10-20 trillion annually.
But these policies are not paying dividends in terms of solving global warming. The Paris Agreement, for instance, is the most expensive treaty in the history of the world -- and a terrible investment in the human future, destined to return only eleven cents on the dollar. Worse still, the money that goes to fund environmental initiatives crowds out other measures that could have a far more dramatic impact on human well-being, particularly in the developing world: by focusing on issues like immunization, education, birth control, and nutrition, we could increase GDP at a vastly higher rate than climate change threatens to lower it.
Measured and data-driven, False Alarm will convince you that almost everything you think about climate change is wrong -- and points the way towards making the world a vastly better, if slightly warmer, world for all.
Off the Grid - Houses for Escape
Recent advances in technologies and home-generated renewable energy have made building away from urban and rural infrastructures more practical and affordable than ever. This survey of the world's most innovative off-grid homes reveals the cuttingedge architecture and technology that is enabling us to escape to some of the most extraordinary natural environments on the planet.
All of the houses featured in this book are fully, or almost fully, self-sufficient in terms of energy, water and, in some cases, food. Architecture and interior design expert Dominic Bradbury reveals how each architect has made everyday living in these wild and natural settings a rewarding and tempting reality. From snowbound cabins in the far Northern Hemisphere to coastal retreats that can only be accessed by boat, the diverse projects collected here show the innovative ways in which architects and their clients are tackling extreme climates, remoteness and construction challenges to enable a new way of life that is both liberating and sustainable.
The imperative to reduce our carbon footprints and refocus on renewable sources of energy is having a profound impact on our domestic lives. This fascinating survey demonstrates that creative architecture, design and technology are redefining the possibilities for leading a truly rewarding and responsible lifestyle.

Attila hun király magánélete - A magányos hódító

Your Wicked Ways
Helen, the Countess Godwin, knows there is nothing more unbearably tedious than a virtuous woman. After all, she's been one for ten long years while her scoundrel of a husband lives with strumpets and causes scandal after scandal. Nature's Mutiny
'Europe where the sun dares scarce appear
For freezing meteors and congealed cold.' - Christopher Marlowe
In this innovative and compelling work of environmental history, Philipp Blom chronicles the great climate crisis of the 1600s, a crisis that would transform the entire social and political fabric of Europe.
While hints of a crisis appeared as early as the 1570s, by the end of the sixteenth century the temperature plummeted so drastically that Mediterranean harbours were covered with ice, birds literally dropped out of the sky, and `frost fairs' were erected on a frozen Thames - with kiosks, taverns, and even brothels that become a semi-permanent part of the city.
Recounting the deep legacy and sweeping consequences of this `Little Ice Age', acclaimed historian Philipp Blom reveals how the European landscape had ineradicably changed by the mid-seventeenth century. While apocalyptic weather patterns destroyed entire harvests and incited mass migrations, Blom brilliantly shows how they also gave rise to the growth of European cities, the appearance of early capitalism, and the vigorous stirrings of the Enlightenment.
A sweeping examination of how a society responds to profound and unexpected change, Nature's Mutiny will transform the way we think about climate change in the twenty-first century and beyond.

The 100 Most Jewish Food
Tablet's list of the 100 most Jewish foods is not about the most popular Jewish foods, or the tastiest, or even the most enduring. It's a list of the most significant foods culturally and historically to the Jewish people, explored deeply with essays, recipes, stories, and context. Some of the dishes are no longer cooked at home, and some are not even dishes in the traditional sense (store-bought cereal and Stella D'oro cookies, for example).
The entire list is up for debate, which is what makes this book so much fun. Many of the foods are delicious (such as babka and shakshuka). Others make us wonder how they've survived as long as they have (such as unhatched chicken eggs and jellied calves' feet).
As expected, many Jewish (and now universal) favourites like matzo balls, pickles, cheesecake, blintzes, and chopped liver make the list. The recipes are global and represent all contingencies of the Jewish experience. Contributors include Ruth Reichl, Eric Ripert, Joan Nathan, Michael Solomonov, Dan Barber, Gail Simmons, Yotam Ottolenghi, Tom Colicchio, Amanda Hesser and Merrill Stubbs, Maira Kalman, Action Bronson, Daphne Merkin, Shalom Auslander, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, and Phil Rosenthal, among many others. Presented in a gifty package, The 100 Most Jewish Foods is the perfect book to dip into, quote from, cook from, and launch a spirited debate.
