Palaces For The People
An eminent sociologist offers an inspiring blueprint for rebuilding our fractured society
We are living in a time of deep divisions. Americans are sorting themselves along racial, religious, and cultural lines, leading to a level of polarization that the country hasn’t seen since the Civil War. Pundits and politicians are calling for us to come together, to find common purpose. But how, exactly, can this be done?
In Palaces for the People, Eric Klinenberg suggests a way forward. He believes that the future of democratic societies rests not simply on shared values but on shared spaces: the libraries, childcare centers, bookstores, churches, synagogues, and parks that help us form crucial, sometimes life-saving connections. These are places where people can gather and linger, strengthening community ties and promoting interaction across group lines. They are vital parts of what he calls our “social infrastructure,” and as Klinenberg reveals in this book, we have been neglecting them. We do so at our peril.
Klinenberg takes us around the globe—from a housing complex in Singapore to an arts incubator in Chicago, from a soccer pitch in Queens to an evangelical church in Houston—to show how social infrastructure helps solve some of our most pressing challenges: isolation, crime, education, health (particularly addiction), political polarization, and even climate change.
Richly reported and elegantly written, Palaces for the People is a passionate plea to acknowledge the role these spaces play in our civic lives as well as an exciting vision of how a twenty-first–century social infrastructure can help us bridge seemingly unbridgeable divides.

Legtöbbször a hatalmukhoz görcsösen ragaszkodó urak álltak a békétlenkedések mögött. Csakhogy a királyok sem voltak ártatlanok. Őket mutatja be a szerző a maguk pőre valóságukban.
Közben olykor kitekintünk idegen országokba is. Milyen hatása volt akkoriban a magyar viszonyokra Bizánc, Velence, a német birodalom és a pápaság hatalmi harcainak? Mi minden történt akkoriban külföldön, ami befolyásolhatta a Hon eseményeit?

A szokatlan üzlet neve is szokatlan: Pöttyös zebra bazár. A street art graffitiken keresztül hallatja a hangját, s közben azon tűnődik, milyen út nyílhat előtte a világban, mely valahogy nem akaródzik teret adni neki. Három atipikus személyiség, három szabad elektron a lélekben. Life Lessons from Nelson Mandela
Every life has the power to change the world.
Ndaba Mandela was raised by his grandfather, Nelson Mandela. It is easy to forget that legendary figures like Mandela were first and foremost human beings, flawed and unique, but in Ndaba's account we have a rare and personal insight into the man behind the myth.
In 11 Life Lessons, Ndaba shares with us his memories - charming, intimate and sometimes surprising - to illuminate Mandela's much-loved principles for how to become the people we want to be.
Always call out injustice - even when we see it in ourselves
Freedom must be given as much as it is taken
Strive to do what is right rather than to prove you are right
Anger has its place, even in a kind heart
Inspired by Mandela's remarkable stories, 11 Life Lessons from Nelson Mandela offers a profound and rewarding pathway to changing your world.

The Last Englishmen
An engrossing story of passion and exploration that traces the end of empire and the stirring of a new world order.
John Auden was a pioneering geologist of the Himalayas. Michael Spender was the first to draw a detailed map of the North Face of Mount Everest. While their younger brothers - W. H. Auden and Stephen Spender - achieved literary fame, they vied for a place on an expedition that would finally conquer Everest. To this rivalry was added another: their shared love for a painter named Nancy Sharp. Her choice would determine each man's wartime loyalties.
From Calcutta to pre-war London to Everest itself, The Last Englishmen tracks a generation obsessed with a romantic ideal. With a cast including writers, artists, political rogues and spies, this is narrative history at its most engaging and illuminating.

The History of Magic
A remarkable, unprecedented account of the role of magic in cultures both ancient and modern -- from the first known horoscope to the power of tattoos.
'Fascinating, original, excellent' Simon Sebag Montefiore
______________________
Three great strands of practice and belief run through human history: science, religion and magic. But magic - the idea that we have a connection with the universe - has developed a bad reputation.
It has been with us for millennia - from the curses and charms of ancient Greek, Roman and Jewish magic, to the shamanistic traditions of Eurasia, indigenous America and Africa, and even quantum physics today. Even today seventy-five per cent of the Western world holds some belief in magic, whether snapping wishbones, buying lottery tickets or giving names to inanimate objects.
Drawing on his decades of research, with incredible breadth and authority, Professor Chris Gosden provides a timely history of human thought and the role it has played in shaping civilization, and how we might use magic to rethink our understanding of the world.

Pardiz - A Persian Food Journey
Pardiz is a personal journey into Manuela Darling-Gansser's "paradise past". Having lived in Iran for the first nine years of her life, she returned as an adult to reconnect with the country she remembered so fondly. This book is a celebration of that time; a compilation of memories, stories and beautiful recipes that underline the depth and broad appeal of this great and enduring food culture.
In Pardiz, what Darling-Gansser does is show how seamlessly Persian food fits with trends of today: flourishing food markets; the primacy of local ingredients; the health-giving aspects of vegetable-centric dishes; and the joys of a shared table. The latter is a theme in her book - and in her life.
In her choice of recipes, she gives a sense of the diversity of Persian food - whether it is served in a restaurant, eaten at home, prepared for a picnic, or enjoyed on the street, the setting can determine what is served. Ultimately, she focuses on recipes that are not too complicated or time consuming - recognising the great virtue that is simplicity. And encouraging readers to embrace the sociability that goes with the food as much as the food itself.

In Europe
The Vintage Classics Europeans series - with covers provided by textile design firm Wallace Sewell, these are must-have editions of European masterpieces, celebrating the warp and weft of a shared literary treasury. In 1999, journalist and historian Geert Mak criss-crossed the continent in the simple yet monumental quest to trace European twentieth-century history as the world slipped into the twenty-first. In Europe is a dazzling account of that journey, and combines the larger story of Europe with intimate, vivid detail.
It is also now a poignant reminder that the European project was then and is now a unprecedented experiment; that we still have `a great deal to tell each other and a great deal to explain.
Shuggie Bain
An Observer 'Best Debut Novelist of 2020'
It is 1981. Glasgow is dying and good families must grift to survive. Agnes Bain has always expected more from life. She dreams of greater things: a house with its own front door and a life bought and paid for outright (like her perfect, but false, teeth). But Agnes is abandoned by her philandering husband, and soon she and her three children find themselves trapped in a decimated mining town. As she descends deeper into drink, the children try their best to save her, yet one by one they must abandon her to save themselves. It is her son Shuggie who holds out hope the longest.
Shuggie is different. Fastidious and fussy, he shares his mother's sense of snobbish propriety. The miners' children pick on him and adults condemn him as no' right. But Shuggie believes that if he tries his hardest, he can be normal like the other boys and help his mother escape this hopeless place.
Douglas Stuart's Shuggie Bain lays bare the ruthlessness of poverty, the limits of love, and the hollowness of pride. A counterpart to the privileged Thatcher-era London of Alan Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty, it also recalls the work of Edouard Louis, Frank McCourt, and Hanya Yanagihara, a blistering debut by a brilliant writer with a powerful and important story to tell.

The Values Compass: What 101 CounPBies Teach Us About Purpose, Life and Leadership
Every day, whether we acknowledge it or not, we make decisions based on what we believe in. The choices, challenges, or opportunities facing us - and how we engage with them - in politics, family, relationships, work, and play reveal something important about our character, desires, and personality to ourselves and to others. When those values align and are shared by a single population, they have the power to transform a nation and teach the world valuable lessons about success.
In THE VALUES COMPASS, Mandeep Rai explores this concept by taking 101 distinct countries and identifying a single key value in each that is represented throughout its history, geography, and culture in the hope that we may find a way to incorporate those values into our own lives. From India's 'faith' to Vietnam's 'resilience', Argentina's 'passion' to Singapore's 'order', Australia's 'mateship' to Uganda's 'heritage' and from Malta's 'community' to Sri Lanka's 'joy', we may all find something of ourselves in others and succeed together as a result.
This is an insightful and readable collection of profiles that open our eyes to the world around us, and in turn help us reflect on which values matter, last, and have the power to create change.
