Mysticism and Logic and Other Essays
The following essays have been written and published at various times, and my thanks are due to the previous publishers for the permission to reprint them.
The essay on "Mysticism and Logic" appeared in the Hibbert Journal for July, 1914. "The Place of Science in a Liberal Education" appeared in two numbers of The New Statesman, May 24 and 31, 1913. "The Free Man's Worship" and "The Study of Mathematics" were included in a former collection (now out of print), Philosophical Essays, also published by Messrs. Longmans, Green & Co. Both were written in 1902; the first appeared originally in the Independent Review for 1903, the second in the New Quarterly, November, 1907. In theoretical Ethics, the position advocated in "The Free Man's Worship" is not quite identical with that which I hold now: I feel less convinced than I did then of the objectivity of good and evil. But the general attitude towards life which is suggested in that essay still seems to me, in the main, the one which must be adopted in times of stress and difficulty by those who have no dogmatic religious beliefs, if inward defeat is to be avoided.
The essay on "Mathematics and the Metaphysicians" was written in 1901, and appeared in an American magazine, The International Monthly, under the title "Recent Work in the Philosophy of Mathematics." Some points in this essay require modification in view of later work. These are indicated in footnotes. Its tone is partly explained by the fact that the editor begged me to make the article "as romantic as possible."
All the above essays are entirely popular, but those that follow are somewhat more technical. "On Scientific Method in Philosophy" was the Herbert Spencer lecture at Oxford in 1914, and was published by the Clarendon Press, which has kindly allowed me to include it in this collection. "The Ultimate Constituents of Matter" was an address to the Manchester Philosophical Society, early in 1915, and was published in the Monist in July of that year. The essay on "The Relation of Sense-data to Physics" was written in January, 1914, and first appeared in No. 4 of that year's volume of Scientia, an International Review of Scientific Synthesis, edited by M. Eugenio Rignano, published monthly by Messrs. Williams and Norgate, London, Nicola Zanichelli, Bologna, and Félix Alcan, Paris. The essay "On the Notion of Cause" was the presidential address to the Aristotelian Society in November, 1912, and was published in their Proceedings for 1912-13. "Knowledge by Acquaintance and Knowledge by Description" was also a paper read before the Aristotelian Society, and published in their Proceedings for 1910-11.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
"Everything you would expect from Collins is
here: fraught teenage love; plenty of violence... the themes of
friendship, betrayal, authority and oppression will please and thrill"
The Guardian
"It works beautifully... please don't
make us wait another decade" The Times
Ambition will fuel him.
Competition
will drive him.
But power has its price.
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth
annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus
Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games.
The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its
fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able
to outcharm, outwit, and outmaneuvre his fellow students to mentor
the winning tribute.
The odds are against him. He's been given the humiliating assignment
of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest
of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined - ; every
choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favour or failure, triumph
or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside
the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute...
and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire
to survive no matter what it takes.
Nick and Charlie
A short novella based on the beloved characters from the graphic novel Heartstopper and Alice Oseman's debut novel Solitaire, which was praised as 'The Catcher in the Rye for the digital age' by The Times.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right?
CHARLIE: "I have been going out with Nick Nelson for two years. He likes rugby, Formula 1, dogs, the Marvel universe, the sound felt-tips make on paper, rain and drawing on shoes. He also likes me."
NICK: "Things me and Charlie Spring do together include: Watch films. Sit in the same room on different laptops. Text each other from different rooms. Make out. Make food. Make drinks. Get drunk. Talk. Argue. Laugh. Maybe we're kind of boring. But that's fine with us."
Everyone knows that Nick and Charlie are the perfect couple - that they're inseparable. But now Nick is leaving for university, and Charlie will be left behind at Sixth Form. Everyone's asking if they're staying together, which is a stupid question - they're 'Nick and Charlie' for God's sake!
But as the time to say goodbye gets inevitably closer, both Nick and Charlie question whether their love is strong enough to survive being apart. Or are they delaying the inevitable? Because everyone knows that first loves rarely last forever...
The Awakening and Selected Short Stories (Legend Classics)
"The bird that would soar above the level plain of tradition and prejudice must have strong wings. It is a sad spectacle to see the weaklings bruised, exhausted, fluttering back to earth."
The Awakening follows Edna Pontellier, a resident of coastal Grand Isle of Louisiana, in her late twenties, who has a quintessential set-up for a content housewife. Indeed, her husband makes good money, and her daily routine should gleefully hinge on the two children, but, Edna is neither a self-sacrificing mother, nor a devoted wife. Instead, she is gradually awoken to rebel against this 'perfect set-up'. Edna finds herself in the middle of two extremes. On one hand, she finds selfless Madame Ratignolle, who is a model wife. On the other, there is dejected Mademoiselle Reisz, who pursues her artistic aspiration in solitude. While taking bold decisions and carving her niche, she explores her sexuality with a womanizer, Alcee and an intimate understanding with a young man, Robert Lebrun. Will this awakening predetermine her ultimate happiness or signpost personal tragedy? Will the duality of the 'outward existence' and 'inward life' be reconciled for Edna to signify her emancipation?
This short novel is widely acknowledged to do both, encapsulating the features of fin de si?cle realism in its linear narrative, and anticipates literary modernism of the early twentieth century. Edna's defiance of the American alternative of Victorian 'Angel in the House' is reminiscent of such classics as Anna Bronte's Tenant of the Wildfell Hall. The Awakening also procures modernist works where the heroines look for the self - namely, Mrs Dalloway, Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Bell Jar. The condensed and intense prose style gives the novel a cryptic charm in line with Fitzgerald's classic, The Great Gatsby. Besides, vivid natural symbolism of water, birds and the moon are the calling card of the novel that enhances its level of ambiguity and multivalence.
Real-life Dragons and their Stories of Survival
Find out the fascinating stories of ten real-life dragons, the myths and legends surrounding them, their discoveries and how they survive today.
For centuries, dragons have captured our imaginations, guarding troves of treasure and breathing out fire. They appear in many myths and legends from around the world, some soaring through the air on scaly wings; some lurking in caves underground and some diving the depths of the seas and oceans.
While there is, sadly, no such thing as a fire-breathing dragon, there are still dragons alive today in the animal kingdom. One of them can even fly. This book brings together the stories of ten real-life dragons, with fascinating facts mixed with some folklore. There are also tales of how these extraordinary creatures were discovered and about their adaptations for surviving in the wild.
Are you ready for the wildlife safari of a lifetime?
This high-interest approach to the natural world shows the diversity of nature, evolution and adaptation and can be used to support the science curriculum study of living things at key stage two.
Full-colour photographs combined with illustrations make this a beautiful and fascinating introduction to real-life dragons around the world.

Lavigne Avril - Under My Skin (Expanded Edition) (Silver Grey) LP
Avril Ramona Lavigne (narodená 27. septembra 1984) je kanadská speváčka a skladateľka. Je považovaná za kľúčovú hudobníčku vo vývoji pop-punkovej hudby, keďže začiatkom 2000-tych rokov vydláždila cestu ženskej a punkom ovplyvnenej pop music. Medzi jej ocenenia patrí okrem iného osem nominácií na cenu Grammy. Vo veku 16 rokov podpísala Lavigne zmluvu na nahrávanie dvoch albumov s Arista Records. Jej debutový štúdiový album Let Go (2002) je najpredávanejším albumom 21. storočia od kanadskej umelkyne. To prinieslo úspešné single "Complicated" a "Sk8er Boi", ktoré zdôraznili osobnosť skate punku a vyslúžili jej titul "Pop-Punk Queen" z hudobných publikácií. Jej druhý štúdiový album Under My Skin (2004) sa stal prvým albumom Lavigne, ktorý sa dostal na vrchol rebríčka Billboard 200 v Spojených štátoch a celosvetovo sa z neho predalo 10 miliónov kópií.
"Under My Skin" je druhý štúdiový album vydaný v Európe 21. mája 2004, potom nasledovalo vydanie vo zvyšku sveta 25. mája 2004 u Arista Records a RCA Records. Lavigne napísala väčšinu albumu so speváčkou a skladateľkou Chantal Kreviazuk, ktorá ju pozvala do interného nahrávacieho štúdia v Malibu, ktoré zdieľali Kreviazuk a jej manžel Raine Maida, kde Lavigne nahrala mnohé piesne. Album produkovali Maida, Don Gilmore a Butch Walker. Je to druhý a posledný štúdiový album Lavigne, ktorý vyšiel na Arista, po Let Go (2002). Bol to zároveň jej prvý album pre RCA. Under My Skin debutoval na prvom mieste v kanadskom rebríčku albumov a v americkom rebríčku Billboard 200.
