Rudolf Kassner (1873 – 1959) byl jednou z nejzajímavějších a zároveň nejméně známých osobností evropského kulturního myšlení první poloviny 20. století. Narodil se ve Velkých Pavlovicích v rakousko?uherské monarchii a navzdory dětské obrně, která ho pro zbytek života odkázala na berle, se stal vášnivým cestovatelem, poutavým esejistou, překladatelem a kulturním filozofem. Kassner studoval filologii, latinu a filozofii ve Vídni a Berlíně a celý život usiloval o to, aby porozuměl lidské představivosti, kritizoval modernitu a zkoumal mystiku, hermetismus i filozofické myšlenky dalekých kultur.
