Třicet let se potuloval Amerikou, vesměs jejím podsvětím, z toho patnáct let strávil ve vězení. Život muže, který pod jménem Jack Black (1871–1932), patrně jde o pseudonym, napsal ve dvacátých letech minulého století knihu Nemáte šanci (You Can’t Win), je obestřen tajemstvím. Literatura uvádí, že jde o autobiografii tuláka, narkomana a kriminálníka, který zaznamenal svůj věčný zápas s mocí, ale hlavně se sebou samým.
Kriminálnické a narkomanské historky, v nichž dopodrobna rozepisuje loupeže a přepadení či vlastní závislost na opiu, nejsou smyšlené, mají punc autenticity, ale i marnosti. Black dobře věděl, o čem píše, svými příběhy vyslal vzkaz lidem do podsvětí, v boji s mocí nemůžete vyhrát, nemáte šanci.
