Kniha představuje sérii rozhovorů s ruskými emigranty, které doplňují komentáře autorky, citace z dobového československého či později českého tisku a vybrané fotografie z archivu respondentů.
Stěžejní motiv všech rozhovorů vychází z povídky Varlama Šalamova Jak to začalo. Šalamov v ní, jak vysvětluje spisovatelka, slavistka a jedna z respondentek knihy Luba Jurgenson, píše o tom, „jak se na Kolymě náhle objevili psi, náhle se objevili bachaři, náhle se muselo pracovat šestnáct hodin pro splnění normy, náhle zmizeli trockisté atd. Ve skutečnosti trockisté začali mizet ještě předtím, stejně jako hladovění nespadlo z čistého nebe. Šalamov v tomto příběhu mluví o něčem jiném. Mluví o tom, jak si najednou všimneme, že se něco stalo. Najednou začneme vidět něco, co jsme předtím neviděli. To u mnoha lidí platí i dnes, kdy náhle začala válka na Ukrajině. Jenže válka probíhala už osm let — a teprve nyní, po ‚plnohodnotné invazi‘, si jí všimli.“
