Jaká je souvislost mezi rajčatovým protlakem, tuňákem, sójou a vepřovým masem? V současné době se z těchto potravin staly komodity – jejich hodnotou není kvalita, ale schopnost generovat zisk nadnárodních kobylkových společností. V této globální hře prohráváme my všichni a planeta, kde žijeme.

Vládci jídla nejsou radostné čtení, ačkoli nám Liberti ukazuje i pozitivní příklady – třeba farmy, kde se snaží chovat prasata tak, aby zažila pohyb venku a měla důstojný život, neúnavné aktivisty bojující proti Goliášům. Zároveň se ale ptá, zda jsou spotřebitelé ochotni zaplatit za „šťastné maso“ víc. Jestli je bohatá společnost ochotná se omezovat, když své problémy vyvezla jinam. Možná ano – když se jí ty problémy začnou vracet domů. Majetnější Evropané dnes rádi nakupují na farmářských trzích, ale byli to právě oni, kdo na začátku přesunul výrobu do zemí, kde je práce levnější a nehledí se na ekologické důsledky. Velkou roli v potravinovém průmyslu, stejně jako v řadě jiných odvětví, dnes hraje Čína. Na celém světě je ale proces podobný: malí farmáři nemají možnost vzdorovat velkým firmám. Liberti říká – za chvíli nám dojde prostor. Kobylkovým společnostem na tom nezáleží.
