Po ňom nasledoval platinový album Slowhand s dojemnou srdcovkou Wonderful Tonight, tú zložil pre Pattie, s ktorou sa napokon koncom roka 1979 oženil. No netrvalo dlho a Eric vymenil heroín za alkohol, čo uškodilo nielen jeho hudbe, ale prispelo aj k definitívnemu rozpadu manželstva.
V osemdesiatych rokoch sa vzchopil, postupne sa zotavil z alkoholizmu a stal sa otcom. No krátko na to mu život uštedril ďalší úder – pri nehode prišiel o život jeho štvorročný syn Conor. Keby sa to stalo predtým, než sa zbavil závislostí, asi by sa vrátil k drogám. V tom čase však už bol omnoho silnejší, hľadal útechu v hudbe a zložil bolestne nádhernú pieseň Tears in Heaven.
