Bánffy ugyanis már 1923-ban kereste a lehetőséget a hazatelepülésre. ("Fájdalmas volt, de ebbe a fájdalomba öröm is vegyült. Először akkor láttam viszont gyönyörű otthonomat, Bonchidát. Minden még úgy volt, ahogyan otthagytam utoljára 1918-ban. Erdélyi látogatásom erősen hatott reám. Ottlétem alatt először villant meg bennem az a gondolat, hogy végleg visszajöjjek szülőföldemre, és távol minden politikától, újra irodalmi munkába fogjak.") Végül 1926-ban ténylegesen hazatért Bonchidára és Kolozsvárra - egy másik országba. Ahogy írja, belejátszott ebbe az a lassacskán elharapózódó szellemi tespedés, amit ő a politikán kívülről már ekkor észrevett. És ezzel meg is szakad a diárium, az utolsó fejezet már nem is gépiratos, csak a ceruzával írt kézírásos lapok maradtak fenn. Ennek ellenére az elkészült memoár lebilincselő olvasmány, hiteles forrás a történelem iránt érdeklődőknek, és egyáltalán: a könyv mindazok számára remek időutazást nyújt, akik az arisztokrácia, Erdély, a Bethlen-korszak és a két világháború közötti Európa történetében kevésbé jártasak.
