Zaznamenával jsem si své úspěchy i pády, radosti i stesky, věci, nad kterými jsem žasl, i ty, u nichž jsem se nahlas zasmál. Pětatřicet let poznávání, ukládání do paměti, zkoumání, shromažďování a zapisování všeho, co mě cestou dojalo nebo povzbudilo. Poznámek o tom, jak žít čestně. Jak nepodléhat stresu. Jak se bavit. Jak méně ubližovat druhým. Jak nechat méně ubližovat sobě. Jak se stát dobrým člověkem. Jak dosáhnout toho, po čem toužím. Jak v životě nacházet smysl. Jak být víc sám sebou.
Teprve nedávno jsem sebral odvahu si deníky prolistovat. Objevil jsem příběhy, které jsem zažil, lekce, jež mi život uštědřil a na něž už jsem zapomněl, básničky, modlitby, rady, ujištění o tom, na čem záleží, a spoustu drobných samolepek. Našel jsem spolehlivé téma, přístup k životu, který mi přináší uspokojení, kdysi i dnes: Pokud víte, jak a kdy se vyrovnat s životními výzvami — jak se poprat s nevyhnutelností —, pak se můžete těšit dlouhodobému úspěchu, nebo jak já říkám, ‚chytnout zelenou‘.
A tak jsem si koupil jednosměrnou jízdenku do samotky v poušti a sepsal knihu, jež právě držíte v rukou: album, dlouhohrající desku, příběh mého dosavadního života. Shromáždil jsem v ní padesát let mých postřehů a ponaučení, pocitů a poznatků, pochval i potup. Ctností, skutečností a krás brutálnosti. Toho, co mi kdy prošlo, při čem mě přistihli, i toho, když jsem zmokl, neboť jsem se snažil tančit mezi kapkami deště.
Doufám, že vám tahle medicína nepřijde moc hořká, že bude jako pár aspirinů, a ne jako cesta rovnou do špitálu, že to bude raketa na Mars, ke které není třeba pilotní průkaz, že to bude kostel, do něhož vás pustí i bez křtu, a že vám za slzami vyčaruje úsměv.
Tohle je milostný dopis. Věnovaný životu.
Je to také průvodce, jak chytit co nejčastěji zelenou — a jak si uvědomit, že i oranžové a červené se jednou změní na zelenou.
