Missy Big Bungalow examines the effect of European men arriving in Siam and Malaya from 1900, but this is told - unusually - from an Asian woman’s point of view. That woman is the author''s grandmother, Chalerm, poor but beautiful and resourceful. To escape poverty, from the age of 15 she is the paramour over twenty years of a Dane, then a Scot. Marriage is impossible. She lives fairy-tale lives, hence her nickname, Missy Big Bungalow. However, her comfortable life is later punctuated by dark episodes, especially after the Japanese occupy Malaya in 1942. This time of turmoil and terror forces Chalerm to make a brave, heart-breaking decision to save her family by moving in as a Japanese businessman’s concubine. By war’s end, although a survivor, she’s bitter and disillusioned. In 1948 British and Allied Forces fight another war in Malaya against Chinese communists. Chalerm’s half-Scottish daughter marries an English soldier and moves to Nottingham. Chalerm then receives baffling accounts of her daughter’s life in austerity Britain. These provide her with startlingly unexpected views of the British. Later, changing social mores mean Chalerm actually marries a Scot. This mixed-heritage family experiences a rich yet sometimes contradictory life in a British colony. The author''s task has been to try to investigate the varied impact of the British Empire on the local Asian people using her grandmother’s family as a microcosm.

On the morning of 4 July 1910, thousands of boxing fans stormed a newly built stadium in Reno, Nevada, to witness an epic showdown. Jack Johnson, the world’s first Black heavyweight champion—and most infamous athlete in the world because of his race—was paired against Jim Jeffries, a former heavyweight champion then heralded as the “great white hope”. It was the height of the Jim Crow era and spectators were eager for Jeffries to restore the racial hierarchy that Johnson had pummelled with his quick fists. Transporting readers directly into the ring, artist Youssef Daoudi and poet Adrian Matejka intersperse dramatic boxing action with vivid flashbacks to reveal how Johnson, the self-educated son of formerly enslaved parents, reached the pinnacle of sport—all while facing down a racist justice system. Between 1958 and 1976, the Irish American writer Mary Lavin had sixteen stories published in The New Yorker. J. D. Salinger had introduced her to the magazine and she was soon offered the magazine’s highly coveted first-reading agreement. It was a prolific time for Lavin, helped in no small part by her close working relationship with her chief editor there, Rachel MacKenzie. They wrote nearly four hundred letters to each other, the topics of which ranged from story edits to holiday plans, windfalls and legal troubles, mutual literary friends and their loveof gardening, promotions and health emergencies. Within a year of working together, they were ending their letters with ‘love’, ‘gratefully’ and ‘affectionately.’Gratefully & Affectionately: Mary Lavin & The New Yorker draws extensively from Lavin and MacKenzie’s letters as well as other material related to the revered magazine. It explores the collaborative relationship between this writer and her editor, Lavin’s own writing process, the inner workings and editing procedures of The New Yorker and the process of publishing a story from manuscript to print during its heyday. The book also reveals Lavin’s professional dealings with agents and publishers and her friendships with prominent literary figures of the time including Eudora Welty, Frank O’Connor, William Maxwell and John McGahern. Gráinne Hurley’s first book offers fascinating insight into the lives and careers of two mid-twentieth-centurywomen, working on either side of the Atlantic and inhabiting the small but hallowed world of literary publishing.
