For this, he too is a hero'' - JOHN PILGER''Michael Mansfield combines rare humanity with a brilliant understanding of the law'' - JON SNOW''A book of great importance ... Mr Mansfield''s thoughtful reflections demand our attention'' - KEN LOACH''I want this book to inspire people, give them a blueprint for fighting their own battles, and challenge the status quo. Vandamme

The Girl Who Killed A Nation

The Girl who Killed a Nation is a fast-paced tale that is deeply reflective, readable and down to earth, and will draw in lovers of travel, history, and personal memoir. It is a true African story that will change readers? perceptions. How did a teenage girl cause the death of 40,000 of her own people in 1856 ? and why do some compare her to an African Joan of Arc or Greta Thunberg? Was she a black liberation leader, a malicious liar or the disruptor of a conservative patriarchal society? Join Treive Nicholas on a moving physical and spiritual journey from the Wild Coast of South Africa to a highly symbolic grave in Cambridgeshire, England as he searches for the infamous teenage prophetess Nongqawuse ? leader of the popular mass movement known as the Great Cattle Killing (1856?57). Fate is his constant companion, gently leading him to the rivers, woods and pastures where mercurial spirits, kings, prophets, witch doctors and colonial leaders played out this visceral African story in the cauldron of nine wars, settler invasion and cruel natural disasters. The ripples of this almost unbelievable tragedy are still felt today. On the grassy hills of the Eastern Cape, Treive concludes the South African leg of his pilgrimage, holding an open-air court at the grave of the revered amaXhosa ruler, King Hintsa. The verdict on his death? Bloody regicide, at the hands of Sir Harry Smith, the Hero of Aliwal and darling of Victorian society. After recovering from four tropical diseases, and much to Treive?s great surprise, the journey does not end there. Instead, it all comes uncomfortably closer to home. Much closer.

Evanira Mendes

This compilation of Evanira Mendes’s biography and translated publications offers for the first time in English an opportunity to revisit the music and culture of 1950s Brazil. Examining the trajectory of the Brazilian Folklore Movement, this book provides a new perspective on contemporary accounts that have overlooked the participation of women scholars from that era and seeks to grant Mendes the recognition she so richly deserves. Growing up on a farm in rural Sao Paulo State, Evanira Mendes (1929–2022) exhibited an early love of folklore, cultivated through the stories, songs, and gossip of wandering travelers in exchange for food and shelter. As she got older, she entered the Conservatório Dramático e Musical de Sao Paulo to study piano, but her love of folklore persisted, and she was invited to work in the school’s folklore archive and later as a folklore researcher for the Sao Paulo Folklore Commission from 1949 to 1959. There, she won awards including the national Sílvio Romero folklore medal; won second place in a national folklore monograph competition; helped to organize the folklore pavilion at the IV Centenary of the Founding of Sao Paulo celebration; and worked closely with important names of the era. Despite these accomplishments, she has essentially been forgotten. This book follows Evanira Mendes’s experiences working as a field researcher as part of the Sao Paulo Folklore Commission, her participation and organization at national and international folklore conferences, her participatory research in Afro-Brazilian community dances and observation and critique of Brazilian modern artistic expression in the theaters of Sao Paulo, and her work as editor of the folklore page and later weekly columnist in the Correio Paulistano newspaper. Her first-person accounts of fieldwork and participation in folklore courses are supplemented by separate published accounts from various sources, helping to compile a comprehensive portrait of music and culture in Sao Paulo and Brazil from that era.

Barbara Comyns

A ground-breaking biography of a cult British novelist. The extraordinary twentieth-century writer Barbara Comyns led a life as captivating as the narratives she spun. This pioneering biography reveals the journey of a woman who experienced hardship and single-motherhood before the age of thirty but went on to publish a sequence of novels unique in the English language. Comyns turned her hand to many jobs in order to survive, from artist’s model to piano restorer. Unpublished letters reveal an occasionally desperate but resourceful and witty woman whose life ranged from enduring poverty when young to mixing with spivs, spies and high society. While working as a housekeeper in her mid-thirties, Comyns began transforming the bleak episodes of her life into compelling fictions streaked with surrealism and deadpan humour. The Vet’s Daughter (1959), championed by Graham Greene, brought her fame, although her use of the gothic and macabre divided readers and reviewers. This biography excavates Comyns’s life and reclaims her fiction, providing a timely reassessment of her literary contribution. It sheds new light on a remarkable author who deftly captured the complexities of human life. -- .

Henry James Comes Home

In this enthralling re-creation of American novelist Henry James'' famous ten-month trip around the United States, lauded critic Peter Brooks brings to life both the literary giant and America in its Gilded Age.In 1904, after two decades of living and travelling abroad, Henry James returned to the United States to discover a world drastically different from the one he had left behind. Suddenly, the future of the world seemed to be in his native land, which he had once considered provincial, lacking in nourishment for the novelist. James thus set forth to refamiliarize himself with the United States, travelling the breadth of the land and exercising his acute powers of observation to document all that he saw. James''s ten-month journey across America and its product, the ethnographic work The American Scene, are the focus of Henry James Comes Home, scholar and literary critic Peter Brooks?s dazzling follow-up to his book Henry James Goes to Paris. Brooks combines biography and criticism to recreate James''s American journey, tracing his travels around New England, down south to Florida, across the Midwest, up the coast of California, and eventually to Seattle and Portland. For James, being American was "a complex fate," and Brooks shows how James''s keen remarks on rampant materialism and the challenges at the heart of democracy are still of enduring relevance to us in this day.

Camp

Over the years, as a camper and a counsellor, Michael Eisner absorbed the life lessons that come from sitting in the stern of a canoe or gathering around a campfire at night. In this deeply personal memoir, he recounts his experiences at one remarkable summer camp and examines how they helped turn him into the man he is today. Camp is Eisner''s ode to Keewaydin - a Vermont camp that four generations of the Eisner family have attended for 100 years - as well as a guide to growing up, building relationships, and developing the tools of leadership. Through heartwarming anecdotes from his time spent at Keewaydin and stories from his life in the upper echelons of American business that illustrate the camp''s continued influence, Eisner creates a touching and insightful portrait of his own youth, as well as a resounding declaration of summer camp as an invaluable national institution. With new material from the author on the continued impact Keewaydin has had on his life in the twenty years since the memoir''s first publication, Camp remains an important personal chronicle of the success mindset and of the character-building that a child can find in a remote corner of the Vermont woods and carry into adulthood.

In the Rhododendrons

''IN THE RHODODENDRONS is vital consolation, amidst the amidst. It''s a triumph, an instant classic. Christle has become one of our art''s most urgent living practitioners'' Kaveh Akbar, author of Martyr! When Heather Christle realises that she, her mother, and Virginia Woolf share a traumatic history, she begins to rewrite and intertwine each of their stories, in search of a more hopeful narrative and a future she can live with. When Heather Christle realises that she, her mother, and Virginia Woolf share a traumatic history, she begins to rewrite and intertwine each of their stories, in search of a more hopeful narrative and a future she can live with.On a recent visit to London''s Kew Gardens, Christle''s mother revealed details of a painful story from her past that took place there, under circumstances that strangely paralleled Heather''s own sexual assault during a visit to London as a teenager. Her private, British mother''s revelation - a rare burst of vulnerability in their strained relationship - propels Christle down a deep and destabilising rabbit hole of investigation, as she both reads and wanders the streets of her mother''s past, peeling back the layers of family mythologies, England''s sanctioned historical narratives, and her own buried memories. Over the course of several trips to London, with and without her mother, she visits her family''s ''birthday hill'' in Kew Gardens, the now-public homes of the Bloomsbury set, the archives of the British Library, and the backyard garden where Woolf wrote her final sentence. All the while, she finds that Woolf and her writings not only constantly seem to connect and overlap with her mother''s story, but also that the author becomes a kind of vital intermediary: a sometimes confidante, sometimes mentor, sometimes distancing lens through which Christle can safely observe her mother and their experiences.Wide-ranging and prismatic, the fruit of an insatiably curious, delightfully brilliant mind, In the Rhododendrons is part memoir, part biography of Virginia Woolf, part reckoning with the things we cannot change and the ways we can completely transform, if we dare. This utterly original book will stir readers into new ways of seeing their own lives.

Crackdown

Garth Mullins was born partially blind and with Albinism into a world too bright for him to fully see and too unforgiving to fully accept him. Growing up, he was often bullied, by both students and teachers, who mocked his appearance and trivialized his disability. But Garth found strength and purpose in anti-fascist activism and punk rock, a scene that accepted him for who he was and offered an escape from the alienation and drudgery of his suburban Vancouver neighbourhood. He also found solace in heroin, spurring an addiction that would span three decades. Garth''s own experiences as a heroin user, complete with dope sickness, incarceration and overdose, is a common story for those struggling with heroin and opioid addictions. And for Garth, it was this realisation, while fighting his addiction, that led him to drug activism. He had seen first-hand the failure of abstinence-based recovery programs, the fatal threat posed by unsafe drug supplies, the over-representation of drug users, particularly Black and Indigenous users, in jails and prisons. And he saw that far from the government being successful in its attempt to curb drug use, its war against drugs had been a deadly failure. Weaving together Garth''s raw and intimate account of his addiction with the broader issues and history surrounding drug treatment and policy, Crackdown offers a forceful challenge to the received wisdom about how best to treat addiction and keep drug users alive and safe.

Angels in the Cellar

Twenty years ago Peter Hahn had a breakdown while in the back of a London taxi. Emotionally exhausted by his corporate life, he no longer recognised himself, but knew he had to find a path out. Since then Peter has found his way to Le Clos de la Meslerie, a small ancient farm in the Loire Valley, where he grows and makes small-batch organic wines. Angels in the Cellar invites us to spend a year in Peter's company among the vines, where he reflects on the land, his life, regenerative farming and the lives of the small group of people he works with. We join Peter through each season, pruning the wines and harvesting the grapes by hand, before we follow him to the wine cellar, where the alchemy begins - and the angels take charge. An evocative, poetic account of a year spent working with nature, Angels in the Cellar is also a powerful repudiation of the global economy, its obsession with hyper-consumption and its impacts on the land and its ecosystems.

Daley

DALEY Is the long-awaited autobiography of the life of double Olympic decathlon champion, Daley Thompson. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, he chronicles his legendary sporting achievements, but, for the first time, also reveals the personal struggles he faced to rise from the humblest of beginnings to become the ultimate Olympic Superstar, who then had to reconcile what he had become with his own humanity as a son and as a father. At his sporting peak, Daley was a charismatic, uncompromising, anti-establishment superhero. That was the public persona the nation loved, and which inspired a generation of Britons to realise that a young Black man could be our hero. But the introvert Daley didn't want to be 'famous' for anything other than his sporting achievements. He was, and remains, the antithesis of today's social media obsessed 'celebrity'. For him, the pure Olympian, it was only ever about the sport and the winning. Much as Daley may be cast as 'unrelenting, invincible for ten years', his sporting supremacy was a product of his singular willpower and courage. He is an invention of his own making, inherently human and born of an Olympian ideal that we all admire, yet with all the same flaws and frailties as the rest of us. Now, for the first time, he tells his story, no punches pulled.

Čítanie o slávnych osobnostiach je mnohokrát inšpirujúce. Motivujú nás biografie slávnych umelcov, známych hercov alebo významných politikov.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.

Nájdete tu biografie z oblasti biznisu, filmu a hudby, histórie, literatúry, športu, mafie a podsvetia, náboženstva, politiky, osobností vedy a umenia.
