Nejvyšší domácí hokejová soutěž nezná lepšího kanonýra. Milan Nový v ní během 590 zápasů nastřílel 474 gólů. Svým uměním pomohl k šesti mistrovským titulům (1x Jihlava, 5x Kladno). Šestkrát vyhrál produktivitu, čtyřikrát kraloval mezi střelci a dvakrát mezi nahrávači.
Jeho účet ze sezony 1976/1977, při které nashromáždil 93 bodů za 59 branek a 34 přihrávek, je dodnes nejpůsobivějším individuálním ligovým rekordem.
Branky střílel při tažení Kladna za primátem v Poháru mistrů evropských zemí i v barvách Washingtonu Capitals, ZSC Curych a Wiener EV.
V reprezentaci přidal do svých statistik 120 přesných zásahů. Dvakrát se stal mistrem světa, dosáhl na olympijské stříbro a na Kanadském poháru 1976 vstřelil ikonický gól, kterým Československu zajistil senzační výhru nad hvězdnou Kanadou.
V letech 1977, 1981 a 1982 získal Zlatou hokejku pro nejlepšího hokejistu Československa.
Je členem Síně slávy českého hokeje (2008) a Síně slávy Mezinárodní hokejové federace (2012).
