Hubert Ripka (1895–1958) patřil k důležitým osobnostem moderních československých dějin, které upadly neprávem v zapomnění. Byl významným politikem a žurnalistou, jenž ze všech sil bojoval za demokracii a nezávislost Československa. Narodil se roku 1895 na Moravě, v Kobeřicích nedaleko Slavkova, své mládí a většinu aktivního života však strávil v Praze, kde vystudoval gymnázium a Filozofickou fakultu Univerzity Karlovy. Stal se novinářem a později patřil k nejbližším politickým spolupracovníkům Edvarda Beneše, který jej pověřoval tajnými misemi do Bělehradu, Berlína, Paříže i Londýna. Ve snaze zajistit nezávislost republiky se Ripka na pokyn Beneše orientoval stále více na Sovětský svaz a patřil k průkopníkům československo-sovětského spojenectví a spolupráce. V roce 1938 odešel do exilu a v Londýně a v Paříži začal organizovat zahraniční odboj. Stal se členem Benešovy československé exilové vlády a v roce 1945 se vrátil do osvobozené republiky, kde byl ministrem zahraničního obchodu a vlivným funkcionářem Československé strany národně socialistické. Byl iniciátorem nepovedené demise nekomunistických ministrů v únoru 1948. Dobrodružným způsobem se mu podařilo uprchnout do exilu, kde se zapojil do boje za svržení komunistického režimu ve vlasti a obnovení československé nezávislosti.
