Příběh za druhé světové války ojedinělý: Poprava předsedy vlády země okupované Němci! Hitlerovci se jí dopustili v červnu 1942 na pražské střelnici v Kobylisích. Na rozdíl od Stalinistů nacisté, jisti si svým vítězstvím, se podobnými vraždami veřejně chlubili! Alois Eliáš nebojoval běžnými zbraněmi jako Tři králové Morávek, Mašín a Balabán.
Jeho zbraní byla vojenská lest, předstírání a oddalování, získávání času a snaha o narušení záměrů protivníka. Za těžkých podmínek udržoval rádiové i kurýrní spojení se svým vrchním velitelem prezidentem Benešem v Londýně a využíval i dřívější známosti s protektorem Neurathem z mírových jednání v Ženevě. Svedl nejeden ústupový boj se svým protivníkem K. H. Frankem. Byl si vědom toho, že mu hrozí smrt. Jiným pomohl k emigraci, ale sám nabídku emigrovat odmítl, že tam už je generálů dost. Teprve v den výměny protektora Heydrichem koncem září 1941 byl zatčen a německým tribunálem složeným z gestapáků odsouzen k smrti. Zemřel jako hrdina. Odmítl šátek přes oči a díval se upřeně na své vrahy.
