Kniha zachycuje příběh plukovníka Dulova (19192008), který pocházel z Podkarpatské Rusi. Za 2. světové války odešel do SSSR. Krátce po vstupu na sovětské území byl zatčen, odsouzen a uvězněn v gulagu. Příležitost pracovní tábor opustit nastala po vypuknutí války mezi Německem a Sovětským svazem. Českoslovenští občané věznění v gulazích z nich mohli odejít bojovat na frontu jako vojáci čsl. vojenské jednotky. Pan Dulov, stejně jako tisíce dalších, tuto příležitost využil. Následně prošel boji vedenými na území dnešní Ukrajiny, Slovenska, Moravy a Čech.

Dne 7. srpna 1939 přešel do Polska, aby se opětovně zúčastnil odboje, o jehož nevyhnutelnosti byl přesvědčen. Po příjezdu do Krakova vstoupil do tvořící se československé vojenské jednotky, jejímž velitelem byl tehdy podplukovník Ludvík Svoboda... ...byl tehdy často zván na poradu o těchto záležitostech československým konzulem v Krakově a přicházel do styku i s otázkami civilní československé emigrace...
...nemohl prostě mlčet, a tak proti nim vystoupil. Tím si přivodil nesmiřitelné nepřátelství československých komunistů, kteří jej udali všemocné NKVD. Na základě tohoto udání byl dne 3. listopadu 1939 zatčen na západní Ukrajině a společně s osmi jinými československými poddůstojníky a vojáky, rovněž udanými komunisty, odvezen do moskevského policejního vězení na Lubjance. Zde byl administrativním rozhodnutím NKVD odsouzen k osmi letům nucených prací v táborech jako nepřítel SSSR.
Propuštěn byl 5. prosiince 1947. V září 1948 emigroval do západního Německa, kde seznámil světovou veřejnost se sovětskými tábory nucené práce. V dubnu 1951 se odstěhoval do USA. V roce 1953 žaloval SSSR a jeho satelity za nucenou práci.
