Tomáš Baťa junior (1914 – 2008) byl jediným synem Marie a Tomáše Baťových. Jeho otec – spolu se svými sourozenci – založil v roce 1894 obuvnickou firmu, která se během let rozrostla v celosvětový koncern, rozšířila se do více než 36 oborů a zaměstnávala tisíce lidí.
Tomáše Baťu juniora zasáhla otcova tragická smrt těsně před dovršením osmnácti let. Na převzetí tak velkého podniku byl ještě velmi mladý, a tak se vedení firmy ujal jeho nevlastní strýc Jan Antonín Baťa. Už ve svých čtyřiadvaceti letech však převzal projekt na výstavbu kanadského města Batawa, aniž by tehdy ještě tušil, že se bude jednat o budoucí útočiště pro celou firmu Baťa. Po roce 1945 přišla společnost Baťa o svou zlínskou matku, světové pobočky osiřely a bylo nutné začít znovu od začátku.
Tomáši Baťovi juniorovi se podařilo opět sjednotit pobočky firmy, které byly rozesety po celém světě a hluboce poznamenány událostmi po druhé světové válce a následném znárodnění. Pod jeho vedením se firma stala největší obuvnickou společností na světě.
V pátek 1. září 2023 uplynulo patnáct let od úmrtí této výjimečné osobnosti světového formátu. Tomík, jak se Tomáši Batˇovi juniorovi přezdívalo, se narodil v roce 1914 a takřka celý život kráčel ve šlépějích svého otce, což vyústilo ve skutečnost, že pod jeho vedením dosáhl koncern Batˇa historicky největšího rozmachu. Když se ale přesto zmíní jméno Batˇa, většině lidem se vybaví právě příběh jeho otce. Jistě nebylo jednoduché být synem největšího exportéra obuvi na světě. Celoživotně se potkával se srovnáváním a často dokonce i s tím, že si jej lidé zaměňovali.
Důvod je logický a pochopitelný – život Tomáše Bati juniora se odehrával v zahraničí a to v době, kdy v naší zemi vládl komunismus a jméno Batˇa muselo být zapomenuto. V zahraničí byl však Tomáš Batˇa junior celosvětově známý podnikatel, a ačkoliv přijal kanadské občanství, vždy se hrdě hlásil k tomu, že je Čechoslovák.

Pediatr Berthold Epstein, narozený 1890 v Plzni, studoval lékařství v Praze, kde se habilitoval a později stal vedoucím Dětské kliniky Německé univerzity. Koncem roku 1938 musel kvůli svému židovskému původu univerzitu opustit. Podařilo se mu s manželkou odejít do exilu do Norska, kde byli však po německé okupaci zatčeni a deportováni do koncentračního tábora v Osvětimi. Manželka tam nedlouho poté zahynula. O profesoru Epsteinovi, který směl v Osvětimi působit jako ošetřovatel, se dozvěděl Josef Mengele a vyžádal si jej jako nedobrovolného pomocníka pro své pokusy. Po osvobození koncentračního tábora Epstein v Osvětimi ještě jako lékař zůstal a poté vstoupil do Svobodova 1. československého armádního sboru, s nímž se v květnu 1945 vrátil do Prahy. Ne všichni jeho někdejší čeští kolegové jej přivítali s nadšením. Přesto se koncem 1949 stal vedoucím Dětského oddělení Nemocnice Na Bulovce a za svou práci v pediatrickém oboru získal četná ocenění. Zemřel v Praze roku 1962. Jeho život je spojen s různými historickými etapami, od rakousko-uherské monarchie až po poválečné období v tehdejším Československu. Kniha vychází za podpory Česko-německého fondu budoucnosti.
