Political Girl

'Witty, urgent, and unflinching... her story speaks to anyone who believes that protest can be art, and that art can confront, disrupt, and even destabilize authoritarian power' Alpa Shah What can you do when your country becomes a repressive authoritarian state? 2014: Russia prepares to host the Winter Olympics. Russia invades Crimea. Putin is re-elected president. Several political prisoners are amnestied and released early from prison. Maria Alyokhina is among them. She had spent two years in a penal colony after performing the punk prayer 'Virgin Mary, Banish Putin' with her friends in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. They had warned the rest of the world of the dangers of authoritarianism, but the Russia she finds when she gets out of prison is even more oppressive. What can you do, she asks, when your country has been seized by all-powerful men who are waging war against another country and their own citizens? As Maria recounts her brave and colourful protests, we are drawn straight into the world of grassroots opposition and witness the absurd measures the Russian state takes to contain protest. And when the full-scale war against Ukraine starts and the Russian opposition is repeatedly silenced, Maria and her activist friends continue to resist despite the high stakes. They fight increasingly absurd cycles of detention and house arrest: sometimes with the smallest acts such as going for a walk or having a rainbow ice cream, until, faced with a new prison sentence, she escapes Russia in May 2022 dressed as a food delivery courier. Her story, like her life, is fiercely courageous, darkly funny and highly inspiring to anyone who wants to stand up for the truth.

Adolf H. - Egy diktátor életútja

"Nincs még elege mindenkinek Hitlerből? A kérdés teljesen jogos. (Jules Barrois)

Night People

DISCOVER MARK RONSON'S ELECTRIFYING MEMOIR ABOUT HIS DJ DAYS IN '90s NEW YORK Mark Ronson was born a night person. With hedonistic creatives for parents, parties became his playground. Yet, having moved to New York City from London at a young age, he always felt like a bit of an outsider, until discovering himself in the pulsing, unifying joy of the city's parties and hip-hop scene. Each night brought a heady mix of music, ambition, danger, delight, and possibilities. Having well and truly caught the DJing bug, he worked to find his place and make his name in the city that never sleeps. Night People conjures the undeniable magic of '90s New York. It evokes the rush of a time and place where fashionistas and rappers on the rise danced alongside club kids and 9-to-5'ers - and invites us into the tribe of creatives and partiers who came alive when the sun went down. A heartfelt coming-of-age tale, Night People is the definitive account of a cultural moment and the making of a musical mastermind.

Bůh i ďábel

Kniha Bůh i ďábel. Život a dílo Ingmara Bergmana, jejímž autorem je britský filmový historik Peter Cowie, je po čtyřiceti letech prvním rozsáhlým životopisem švédského režiséra a spisovatele. Sláva Vorlová

Předností knižního pojednání životaběhu náchodské rodačky Slávy Vorlové (1894–1973), jedné z mála mezinárodně úspěšných českých žen-skladatelek, v kompozici žačky Vítězslava Nováka a Jaroslava Řídkého, je úplnost a pečlivost, s níž hudební publicistka Anna Šerých zachycuje umělkynin tvůrčí vývoj i mimořádně pohnutý lidský osud.

Miriam

THE NO. 1 BESTSELLERShortlisted for Biography of the Year, Irish Book Awards 2025‘Hugely uplifting. My mood was completely altered in a really lovely way by it. She is remarkable – really relatable and really kind. I would recommend this very much’ Marian Keyes‘Beautiful … fascinating insights … authentic and open’ Her.ie‘This book is great’ Patrick Kielty, The Late Late Show‘Fast-paced and enjoyable’ Irish Times---The fascinating new memoir from one of Ireland's most celebrated and singular broadcastersI started writing this book as an exclusively work memoir but the work and the personal kept overlapping. I don’t know if that’s because I’m a woman or a mother or both, or none of those reasons. I just know that for my story to be authentic and truthful, I couldn’t simply focus on the work side of my life. Miriam O'Callaghan is one of Ireland's best-known broadcasters, covering every election, referendum, major controversy and important public event for TV, and hosting an award-winning radio show. Combining career success, high-octane glamour and being a mother-of-eight makes her a truly unique figure in Irish public life. In her absorbing memoir, Miriam shares touching stories from her personal life – from the life-changing impact of losing her beloved sister and father in a matter of months, and the end of her first marriage that same year, to the joys and challenges of bringing eight children into the world and juggling a frenetically busy life (‘give up on perfection’ is her wise advice!). Miriam includes fascinating insights into a career that has given her a ringside seat to a changing Ireland. Like attending Bobby Sands’ wake even before she was a journalist, and life coming full circle when she championed John Hume to be declared the greatest figure in Irish history. She describes extraordinary debates, important and heart-breaking conversations with people in the eye of a media storm, and how she goes after and prepares for the big interviews – as well as what happens when things go wrong. Miriam also addresses the recent RTÉ controversies that cast a shadow over its high-profile presenters, not least herself. Miriam is an exceptionally honest and personal memoir from one of Ireland’s most esteemed broadcasters‘Candid and intimate’ Irish Independent

Please Live

A RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK 'Powerful . . . a coming-of-age story with a twist' Guardian'Heart-wrenching . . . We need accounts like this haunting, compelling book' Telegraph'A profound and moving tribute . . . It is Lana's inside perspective on what it was like to grow up within this society that makes this such a unique and powerful book' Sunday Times'Wonderfully brave, beautifully written and utterly authentic' TLS'Haunting' Radio Times'Please live' were the last words fifteen-year-old Lana said to her mother. Shortly afterwards Natalia Estemirova was kidnapped outside their apartment block in Grozny, Chechnya. On 15th July 2009, she was murdered for telling the truth. A mountainous sliver of land which creates a natural boundary between Europe and Asia, for centuries Chechnya had been a sharp bone in Russia's throat. Three years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, frustrated by the continued presence of the independence movement within Chechnya, Russia invaded. It was a war of extraordinary brutality. It turned Lana's mother, Natalia Estemirova, from a teacher into a human rights investigator. She became a dedicated member of Memorial, intent on exposing the kidnappings, bombings, torture and murders committed by Russian forces and Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed Chechen President. Natalia Estemirova's life, assassination, and the impunity that followed it, tell the story of Putin's Russia. This is Lana's story of growing up in a war. Of the intense bond between a mother and daughter, desperate to be together even though it was so much safer for Lana to live elsewhere, often for months at a time. It is a book both about being brave and about being ordinary in extraordinary times. It's the fulfilment of a promise Lana made at her mother's grave.

The Undisputed King of Selston

'Captivating and deeply moving.' Richard Coles'Evocative, beautifully written . . . conjures locations and feelings almost magically.' Jeremy Vine'My brain has made the decision . . . I am going to love this book.' Richard Hawley There was a time when he felt like the undisputed King of Selston. Then again, there were several years when he was convinced that he could talk to animals and had even mastered the power of flight - sailing nightly over the headstocks, slag heaps and doggedly beautiful countryside of an isolated East Midlands mining village. But, deep down, Danny Scott knew that the real King of Selston was and always would be coal. Over the last seven hundred years, coal dust had settled on every inch of Selston. It was in the food he ate, the air he breathed and the words he spoke. It fashioned resilient men like his dad and The Texan; feisty women like his mother, whose right-hook was feared even more than her fondness for house fires. Danny was a clever bugger - dangerously clever, some said - and fiercely proud of Selston, his dad and his mining heritage. Five generations of his family had spent their working lives underground, providing fuel for the Industrial Revolution, the electrical, rail and motoring revolutions. Without it, the modern age wouldn't have been so . . . modern. But as this young boy prepared to follow in his dad's footsteps, things began to change. The Devil became captain of the local darts team. Fortune tellers held seances in the front room of his council house. And that once unassailable King's reign seemed to be coming to an end. For dangerously clever buggers, there was only one option... somewhere else, someone new. Funny, poignant and alive to the unheralded beauty, purpose and camaraderie of a village which finds itself on the wrong side of history, THE UNDISPUTED KING OF SELSTON shines a light onto a forgotten industry and the dark shadows that wormed their way into the families who got left behind. 'Proper working class stories don't get much of a look-in these days. A shame, really. Especially when they're as beautifully written as this one.' Noddy Holder

This Is Me: A Reckoning

Heroes and Nashville star Hayden Panettiere reclaims her story in a remarkably candid memoir. Hayden Panettiere's career in entertainment began before she was old enough to walk. From early commercials to film and television roles in hits like Remember the Titans, her career unfolded in the public eye resulting in tremendous success by her early teens. She had become a fixture of early-2000s pop culture, earning acclaim for performances in Heroes, Nashville (which earned her two Golden Globe nominations) and beyond-while quietly carrying the weight of expectations that came with being Hollywood's "It girl." Behind the image was a far more complicated reality. As Hayden entered adulthood, the industry that once felt playful grew unforgiving. The pressure placed on young performers, the hefty price that often comes with fame, and how quickly someone else can take control of your story. She recounts being scrutinized by tabloids, watching her body and private pain become public property, and performing storylines on-screen that echoed trauma she was living through off camera. In this memoir, Hayden shares a rare and intimate glimpse into her life behind closed doors opening up about postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse, and loss. She holds nothing back as she reflects on the moments she calls "lifequakes"- experiences that fractured her sense of self and forced her to rebuild it from the inside out. In This Is Me: A Reckoning Hayden showcases her most vulnerable role yet . . . this is her story on her terms.

Robert H. Jackson

Discover the meteoric rise of one of the most extraordinary and singular figures in American jurisprudence, Robert H. Jackson, from self-trained lawyer to influential Supreme Court Justice and chief U.S. prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials, in this compelling new biography.Until he joined the U.S. government in 1934, Robert H. Jackson had been a lawyer in private practice in Upstate New York who was admitted to the bar without going to college and after completing only one year of law school. Once part of FDR''s administration, Jackson became, in rapid succession, United States Solicitor General and United States Attorney General, where he successfully defended New Deal programs before the Supreme Court, including the legality of Lend Lease, which helped the U.S. give war supplies to England in exchange for grants of territory and harbors. Jackson played a central role in formulating the arguments justifying a number of initiatives on constitutional grounds and in drafting the policy statements that accompanied them. In 1941, FDR nominated him to be Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, on which he served until his death in 1954, only months after his adding his vote to the unanimous decision in Brown V. Board of Education. It was a meteoric rise for someone from outside the elite, and essentially self-trained. That didn''t stop Jackson from becoming one of the most influential and independent-minded judges of his day, unafraid to question the status quo and leave his mark on a number of landmark cases, including West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnett, which guaranteed First Amendment rights by holding that students in public schools did not have to salute the flag or recite the Pledge of Allegiance. He dissented from the notorious decision in Korematsu v. U.S., which condoned the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War Two. To many, however, Jackson''s most significant contribution was as chief U.S. prosecutor at the Nuremberg war trials following the war. Drawing on Jackson''s extensive personal papers in the Library of Congress and the Jackson Center, as well as a substantial oral history, G. Edward White''s biography offers the first full-length portrait in decades of this fascinating and seminal figure.

THE VOICE IN MY HEAD IS GOD

In his most personal work yet, Grammy Award–winning rapper 2 Chainz shares the spiritual journey behind his success, offering a raw, reflective, and deeply motivational meditation on the inner voice that’s guided him his whole life: God. Before he was 2 Chainz, he was Tauheed Epps—an only child growing up in College Park, Georgia, raised by a single mother while his father served time in prison. Though he excelled in school and earned a basketball scholarship, the streets were never far behind, and by fifteen, he had been arrested and was hustling to survive. He faced doubt and self-destruction, but even then, something told him there had to be more. In THE VOICE IN MY HEAD IS GOD, 2 Chainz tells the story of how he walked away from the trap and found his purpose: not by fame or fear, but by faith. With his unmistakable voice and unflinching honesty, he reflects on the hardest moments of his life and the quiet revelations that shaped him. From the spiritual alarms he couldn’t ignore to the mentors who showed up at the right time, he explores how his music and verses poured out when he finally listened to the voice that had been there all along. From hanging with Lil Wayne to getting early help from Ludacris, 2 Chainz brings us into the defining moments of his life and career while delivering a powerful message about discipline, divine timing, and self-belief. Along the way, he offers more than a memoir. He shares a way of thinking, of trusting yourself, and of listening to the voice that never steers you wrong. Lyrical, grounded, and fiercely motivational THE VOICE IN MY HEAD IS GOD is part blueprint and all heart.

The Aristocrat and the Able Seaman

‘An important and moving contribution to the study of the Titanic.' - Gareth Russell, author of The Ship of DreamsAs Titanic left Southampton in 1912, neither the aristocrat nor the able seaman could have imagined they would end up navigating a tiny lifeboat together at night among towering icebergs. But when Thomas Jones realised Noël Rothes’ calm capability, he put her at the tiller of his boat, and for seven long hours they did all they could to shepherd twenty-five other people to safety. Their ordeal forged an unlikely rapport that lasted until Noël died in 1956. Drawing on contemporary sources, personal papers and letters, Angela Young, Noël’s great-granddaughter, brings their incredible story to light – a story of courage in the face of unthinkable tragedy.

Čítanie o slávnych osobnostiach je mnohokrát inšpirujúce. Motivujú nás biografie slávnych umelcov, známych hercov alebo významných politikov.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.

Nájdete tu biografie z oblasti biznisu, filmu a hudby, histórie, literatúry, športu, mafie a podsvetia, náboženstva, politiky, osobností vedy a umenia.
