Minnie Pallister: The Voice of a Rebel

Minnie Pallister's life was so fantastic that not even a thrillerwriter could imagine it. A feminist, pacifist and socialist, she was twice accused of sedition in the First World War before travelling to Nazi Germany in late 1938 and 1939 to rescue Jews, helping bring them to Britain at the outbreak of the Second World War. In between, having reached national prominence in the labour movement, in which she was considered the best woman orator, and with a Parliamentary career beckoning, she was struck down by an illness which cruelly robbed her of speech. Suffering years of paralysing infirmity, which reduced her to the edge of penury, she eventually recovered to become a successful journalist with the Daily Mirror and the Daily Herald. Fearless and principled and always challenging, not least in advocating gender equality, Pallister was initially barred from a position with the BBC because of her socialist politics, and later twice banned by the Corporation, first for her pacifist then her feminist politics. An outstanding broadcaster who became for a time a household name, she was a regular contributor to Woman's Hour and as an advocate of women's rights from the 1920s to the 1950s, she was a forerunner of the Women's Liberation Movement. Pallister was such a compelling figure that her 'Life Story' was serialised on radio over five days during her lifetime.

Eric Warburg

The history of the transatlantic partnership has become highly topical in recent years; in fact, in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it has been felt as a key reassurance under threat from the United States’ increasing isolationism during Donald Trump’s second term in the White House. In her life of Eric Warburg, Jeanette Erazo Heufelder tells the story of the nephew of the art historian Aby Warburg, whose world-famous library Eric relocated to London and saved from the Nazis. Coming from a long line of German–Jewish bankers, Eric Warburg emerged from the looming shadow of preceding generations of Warburgs, and repurposed their liberal values to form the core of his own Atlantacist convictions. Warburg spent the inter-war years working closely with the American branch of his family and their connections in government to promote the cause of international peace and stability in the wake of the Great War. After Hitler’s rise to power and the period following his fall, Warburg became a helper of escapees, an intelligence officer in the US Army, a transatlantic bridge builder, and a Cold Warrior, and with the help of the cooperation channels he set up, West German and US social groups were aligned with the West amidst the turmoil of post-war Europe. His life, and that of Aby Warburg’s library, tells the story of Europe's twentieth century, the legacy of which continues to inform and inspire the transatlantic partnership today.

The Cadence of a Song

Shortlisted for the James Tait Black Prize. The first biography of one of the twentieth century's foremost champions of Hebridean culture. The American-born folklorist and musician Margaret Fay Shaw’s passion for the Hebrides led her to the island of South Uist in 1929 and then to Canna in 1935 as the wife of the eminent folklorist John Lorne Campbell. Her extraordinary work in documenting and preserving traditional Gaelic songs and customs remains a vital resource for understanding Hebridean music, and the Campbells’ house on Canna is a unique collection of priceless material celebrating the Hebridean world. This vast archive also includes Margarets collection of still and film photography, which capture the essence of island life at a time when old traditions were vanishing. This book celebrates the legacy and life of a remarkable woman, who herself wrote with such wit and flair of her travels and adventures and which took her from turn of-the-century Pennsylvania to 1920s New York, Paris, Nova Scotia and the Hebrides, where she lived until her death in 2004. Fiona J. Mackenzie has been named as one of The List's Hot 100 Arts and Culture Contributors in Scotland for 2025.

Death of an Ordinary Man

Now I understand there are no ordinary lives – that every death is the end of a single event in time’s history: an event so improbable as to be miraculous, and irreplaceable in every particular.Sarah Perry''s father-in-law, David, died at home nine days after a cancer diagnosis and having previously been in the good health. The speed of his illness outstripped that of the NHS and social care, so the majority of nursing fell to Sarah and her husband. They witnessed what happens to the body and spirit, hour by hour, as it approaches death.Death of an Ordinary Man is an unstinting account of death by cancer, a reportage into the daily experience of caring, an exploration of the structural conditions of dying in the UK, and most importantly a testament to David’s life, that of an ordinary man.Unflinching and profoundly moving, Sarah Perry confronts the taboo surrounding death and shows us how to confront all of the terror and beauty that comes with the end of life - and how the saddest thing she has ever seen is also the best thing she''s ever done.

Whitney Straight

Whitney Straight made his own way in life. Born in New York with a silver spoon in his mouth, he would earn his living in the board rooms of some of Britain’s greatest companies. He dropped out of Cambridge to become an outstanding racing driver, and run a team of Maseratis across Europe and Africa. A qualified pilot at 17, he revolutionised aircraft design for the enthusiast, and his extraordinary war saw him rise from Pilot Officer to Air Commodore. He survived the invasion of Norway, a crash-landing in occupied France and a year as a PoW to emerge with an MC, DFC and US Legion of Merit. Rejecting Churchill’s proposal of a career in politics, he became CEO of BOAC, transforming it into a national airline to be proud of. At Rolls-Royce, he railed against a company dominated by engineers who made poor businessmen, and played a founding role in the separate paths of the aero and auto businesses still seen today. An incurable romantic, he could never imagine being married to anyone other than his wife, yet he had numerous relationships. Paul Kenny has been granted unfettered access to Straight’s diaries and photograph albums, and has scoured archives on both sides of the Atlantic, leaving no stone unturned in pursuit of the full story of one of the twentieth century’s greatest mavericks.

S padákem nad hlavou - Jan Kubiš a ti druzí

Po úspěšné monografii Eduarda Stehlíka Jan Kubiš. Nezastaví mne ani to nejhorší…, věnované našemu nejznámějšímu parašutistovi, se nakladatelství TVÁŘE vrací k této významné osobnosti našich dějin. Tentokrát nejsou součástí knihy pouze osudy Jana Kubiše, ale i jeho jednadvaceti krajanů, kteří během druhé světové války prošli v rámci československé zahraniční armády na Západě parašutistickým výcvikem a kurzem útočného boje. Polovina z nich byla zařazena do připravovaných výsadkových operací, ostatní byli začleněni k československým a spojeneckým jednotkám. Sedm mužů bylo nakonec vysazeno v rámci paraskupin ANTHROPOID (Jan Kubiš), BRONZE (František Vrbka), KARAS (Jaroslav Krátký), CALCIUM (František Široký), BARIUM (Josef Šandera), POTASH (Jan Bartejs) a TUNGSTEN (Leopold Musil) do okupovaného Československa, kde plnilo bojové a zpravodajské úkoly. Autory knihy jsou historici Moravského zemského muzea v Brně Jan Břečka, Jiří Mikulka a Lukáš Lexa společně s ředitelem Památníku Lidice Eduardem Stehlíkem a s dlouholetým badatelem Petrem Kopečným.

The Irish Lightkeeper’s Legacy

A book that tells the story of courageous people with strong family values who persisted, against all odds, in the years prior to the birth of the Irish nation. In 1837 an Irish Catholic peasant laboured from dawn to dusk farming land owned by the Marquess of Ely. Trapped in a feudal system from which there was no escape Alec Power should have lived and died working these fields, be he escaped. Through strength of character, tenacity, and some luck, Alec gained admittance into the Irish Lightkeeping Service. The author brings alive the story of Alec and his wife, Maggie, who spent their lives in dangerous places on the coasts of Ireland, contending with nature at its wildest. Enduring incredibly rugged, dangerous conditions, surviving the Great Famine, this was truly life on the edge. Read about Alec's son, Thomas, who trained to be a lightkeeper, but was inexorably drawn to the most advanced technology and the most dynamic business of his times, the railway. He became part of the new Irish middle class, emerging just as the Irish people intensified their struggle to seek freedom and nationhood. "...[the] writing style is outstanding...mixing in large elements of Irish history, such as the Land wars and the strikes before World War 1... the style of the book flows exceptionally well...[the] re-creations of so many deaths were incredibly poignant and very moving."  Peter Graves, Australia

Getting Lost On My Way

For fans of McCarthy’s Bar, a debut memoir about a woman’s humorous and poignant solo adventures of self-discovery on Ireland’s backroads following a painful divorce. When an introverted, divorced, middle-aged mother and school librarian from the Midwest decides to leave her comfort zone and travel alone to Ireland, her desire to fulfill her dream overcomes her fear as she immerses herself into what will become an adventure of courage and self-discovery. Motivated by her love of Irish music and Celtic spirituality, along with her desire to find healing from depression and divorce, Diane sets off for Ireland, a country she’s been obsessed with for years. Her romantic preconceptions of the Emerald Isle quickly clash with reality, however, and while there she faces many obstacles, including driving the narrow, ill-marked roads throughout the countryside she traverses. Nevertheless, this first sojourn leads to three more trips over the next six years, and she gradually learns to navigate Ireland’s back roads—not to mention her own personal and spiritual roads toward self-discovery and acceptance. This heartfelt and humorous account of Diane’s adventures—including hanging out with an Irish rock band, traveling remote roads in search of a hermit nun, and meeting her favorite Irish musician not once but twice—is sure to inspire readers to get outside their own comfort zones and take some rewarding risks of their own.
