Me, You, Them

Sheffield. 2019. Evie and her husband wait in a shopping centre coffee shop for a woman they have only ever spoken with online. When she arrives, they go to a motorway hotel together and have sex with the casual promise afterwards to meet again sometime. When they took their marriage vows, they had meant every word. So how had they drifted so far from the life they had imagined? In her lyrical meditations on the fluidity of desire, Evie offers an intimate and unfiltered look into the realities of an open marriage, challenging assumptions about love, commitment, and the societal rules that often confine us. Can you truly redefine your individual boundaries without destroying your partnership? And what does it mean to find empowerment in breaking the mould? Me, You, Them is a book about the power of the body to unlock the mind. It is about want and attraction and what defines them. It is a memoir that will dare you to reconsider the very definitions of love, desire, and the boundaries we so readily accept.

Alain Delon – A nyughatatlan

A könyvből kiderül. A könyvben Alain féltestvérén kívül megszólalnak a barátok, a gyerekek, a szerelmek – köztük Romy Schneider és Mireille Darc –, a rendezők, akikkel együtt dolgozott.

Red and Black in Harlem and Jamaica

The first complete account of the life and work of Wilfred Adolphus Domingo (1889-1968), one of the most significant West Indian anti-colonialists of the twentieth century. When W. A. Domingo died in 1968, the Jamaican ex-premier Norman Manley wrote that 'no one in the world made greater sacrifices or suffered more for the cause he believed in—the cause of freedom for Jamaica and our escape from the bonds and fetters of British Imperialism.' Despite this claim, Domingo has remained a shadowy figure. This book brings him, at last, into the foreground of anti-colonial struggle in the Caribbean. The book looks at Domingo's ideological tenets and political commitments at various stages in his life. Each section contains a substantial introduction followed by a selection of Domingo's writings, including new biographical information which sheds light on Domingo's early years as well as on his relationships with Marcus Garvey and the Communist movement.

Thom Gunn: A Cool Queer Life

Winner of the Hatchards & Biographers'' Club First Biography Prize‘With this meticulously researched biography, we don’t so much move closer as move in with Gunn and shadow him through his life . . . Gunn’s life is chronicled beautifully here.’ Andrew McMillan, Literary Review‘A consummately researched, intelligent and sympathetic biography – and, which matters most, he’s a very good reader of the poems.’ Sam Leith, Guardian‘A fine, frank biography.’ Peter Conrad, Observer‘Admirably unsentimental . . . allowing all Gunn’s complexities and contradictions to emerge unvarnished . . . the greatness of his poetry endures.’ Daily Telegraph‘The first biography of Thom Gunn, and likely the definitive one . . . Nott’s book is one of the best versions of a gay relationship conducted over this half century.’ Colm Toibin‘Nott has set out here to produce a work sturdy enough to support decades of future commentary on Gunn. He’s succeeded — this book is everything you ever wanted to know about Thom Gunn but had not even thought about asking.’ New York Times Book ReviewThe eagerly awaited, no-holds-barred biography of the great poet: an intellectual maverick, sexual rebel and icon of queer literature.Thom Gunn: A Cool Queer Life is a landmark study of one of England''s — and America’s — most innovative and revolutionary poets. Michael Nott chronicles, for the first time, Gunn’s largely undocumented life: his childhood in Kent and London, his mother’s suicide, and his mind-opening education at Cambridge, where he read Shakespeare and John Donne, wrote his first book, Fighting Terms, and met the man who was to become his life partner – Mike Kitay. In his mid-twenties, Gunn followed Kitay to America and became one of the great poet-documenters of San Francisco’s queer culture, capturing both the hippie mentality of the time and his own visceral experience of sex, drugs, and loss. Through the eighties and beyond, Gunn found himself in the midst of the AIDS crisis, recording its catastrophic impact in The Man with Night Sweats, poems that provide, too, its most poignant epitaph.Gunn was not a confessional poet, but inseparable from his rigorous formal poetry was a ravenous embracing of life and an acute awareness of death. Michael Nott, co-editor of The Letters of Thom Gunn, draws on letters, diaries, notebooks, interviews, and Gunn’s poetry to bring us a vivid portrait of a great literary mind, sexual rebel and queer icon.

The Gambler

As a pioneer in the field of TV betting, Rob thinks he has uncovered the path to untold riches, winning big on Strictly Come Dancing, X Factor, Eurovision - you name it. While millions sat on their sofas watching and wondering who might win or who'd be evicted from their favourite shows that week, Rob would be working out the odds, checking his formulas and gambling big. Rob's book takes readers into the fascinating world of TV gambling and beyond. Surviving the nerve-jangling moments waiting and watching to see if his luck was in or if he'd be on the breadline that week, Rob honed his skills over years to seem almost psychic. And he didn't stop at TV, branching out to take a chance gambling on everything from the mating habits of pandas in a zoo to whether a superstar will sing with their top off on stage. But he soon discovers that cleaning up with the bookies comes at a huge cost. With his trading exploits taking over his every waking thought, and creating a life of desolate solitude Robinson Crusoe would be proud of, he fears his obsessive pursuit of the golden ticket is poised to end unhappily, in lonely bachelorhood. So he decides to take his longest shot yet - heading off into the wilds of provincial Russia, with dreams of a James Bond-style tryst with a mystery woman who could yet turn out to be a vodka-drinking scammer aiming to fleece him out of house and home. Detailing the often weird and downright wacky investments Rob makes over two decades of betting, The Gambler reveals the roller coaster world of someone willing to risk it all on the most outlandish outcomes, including when it comes to seeking romance. Quirky, irreverent and authentic, this is a deeper tale about adventure, taking a leap of faith, and seeking to beat the odds.

The Absence

As a member of Big in Japan, The Slits and, most famously, Siouxsie and The Banshees and The Creatures, 'Budgie' became one of the era-defining drummers in the much-mythologised post punk scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Growing up in working class St Helens in the 1960s, Peter Clarke lost his mum as a young boy and it's her 'absence' that haunts the pages of this book. Disenchanted with art school inLiverpool, Peter became Budgie and befriended the likes of Jayne Casey, Holly Johnson, Pete Burns, Bill Drummond and other luminaires of the legendary Eric's' Club, before taking off for London and the big city heat of punk. Budgie's unique technique and musical sensitivity endeared him to the all-female group The Slits, who asked him to play on their debut album Cut. Subsequent touring with former members of the Sex Pistols and others from the post punk aristocracy firmly established Budgie's reputation for innovation. But the beating heart of this painfully honest and frank account of a life often sabotaged by substance abuse and alcoholism is, of course, his long-term position as Siouxsie and The Banshee's drummer and co-writer alongside ex-lover, and ex-wife, Siouxsie Sioux. In the Banshees and seminal side project The Creatures, their creative partnership produced some of the most seductive and celebrated pop music of the decade, from Juju, through A Kiss in the Dreamhouse to the salutary valedictory album, Peepshow. Eventually, their personal relationship started to fall apart, with inevitable consequences for both bands. The Absence is brave and unflinching in its dissection of how and why this happened. Angels emerged, many of them female, to show Budgie that a mother's lost love can be replaced. A man and musician whose creativity and singular style came to define the goth-pop 1980s as much as any other individual, Budgie's life is both fabulously glamorous and a tawdry cautionary tale. For the first time the story of this most exalted and mysterious of bands has been told by one who survived inside the belly of the beast.

I Knew a Man Who Knew Brahms

A vivid personal account of a Golden Age in classical music—the second half of the 20th century—providing a rare, behind-the-scenes view of the inner workings of a top symphony orchestra.Nancy Shear was only fifteen when she began sneaking into Philadelphia Orchestra concerts through the stage door, and seventeen when she was hired as a member of the orchestra’s library staff to help prepare the music; one year later, she became Leopold Stokowski’s musical assistant. Being young and female, she was a pioneer in both positions. I Knew a Man Who Knew Brahms takes readers into the homes, studios, and minds of legendary artists with whom Shear shared close personal relationships, including Stokowski, Mstislav Rostropovich, Eugene Ormandy, and members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Many of these brilliant and talented artists were also outrageous, egocentric, and tyrannical. Throughout this book, Shear topples more than a few revered musicians from their podiums and their pedestals. A literary welcome mat to the beautiful world of classical music, this memoir is accessible and engaging for all. It brings readers into rehearsals and concert halls, revealing the choices musicians must consider, and what conductors, players, and composers really do. A heartwarming story about passion, determination, and survival, I Knew a Man Who Knew Brahms explores music at its core. No reader will ever listen to music the same way again.

Čítanie o slávnych osobnostiach je mnohokrát inšpirujúce. Motivujú nás biografie slávnych umelcov, známych hercov alebo významných politikov.

Absolútne prvou biografiou všetkých čias je zrejme Excellentium Imperatorum Vitae, ktorú napísal grék Cornelius Nepos a opisoval v nej životy viacerých gréckych vojenských generálov.

Pri biografickej literatúre to platí stonásobne, pretože v ruke držíme príbeh reálneho človeka, z ktorého môžeme čerpať mnoho inšpirácie a tipov.

Nájdete tu biografie z oblasti biznisu, filmu a hudby, histórie, literatúry, športu, mafie a podsvetia, náboženstva, politiky, osobností vedy a umenia.
