Wolfgang Tillmans. Today Is The First Day

A substantial and immersive artist's book summarizing Wolfgang Tillmans' multifaceted approach to image-making, from video and performance to music and activism Conceived and designed by German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968), this richly illustrated artist's book explores the latest developments in Tillmans' work over the last three years. Today Is The First Day conveys his richly diverse approach to image-making, video, performance, music and political activities, and also features newly commissioned texts from contributors--including novelist and author of The Lonely City Olivia Laing, historian and essayist Brian Dillon, curator Catherine Wood and geologist Dr David Chew--each of whom illuminate a different aspect of Tillmans's work. The book includes over 30 pages featuring his set design for the English National Opera's production of War Requiem; recent portraits such as his now iconic image of Frank Ocean; and detailed installation views that allow us to see in-depth Tillmans' imaginative approach to exhibition installation.

I Am Change

They told her that her body belonged to men and her mind didn't matter. They were wrong. "What if I don't want to marry?" Lillian held her breath. She had never said the words out loud. "Not want to marry?" Her aunt frowned. "What else would you do?" Set in a Ugandan village, Lilian has learned to shrink herself to fit other people's ideas of what a girl is. In her village a girl is not meant to be smarter than her brother. A girl is not meant to go to school or enjoy her body or decide who to marry. Especially if she is poor. Inspired by and written in consultation with young Ugandan women, and addressing the difficult subject of FGM, I Am Change is the tragic but empowering story of how a young girl finds her voice and the strength to fight for change.

Frida Kahlo and San Francisco: Constructing her Identity

Given Kahlo's special bond with San Francisco and the city's impact on her art and her fashion, presenting the exhibition in this venue carries special significance. Many iconic photographs that show Kahlo as a Tehuana (by Cunningham, Adams, Alvarez Bravo, and Weston) are from San Francisco, and her first self-portrait in full Tehuana attire was painted in San Francisco (now in the collection of SFMOMA). Frida Kahlo's encounters with "Gringolandia" (as she called the United States) were formative and complex. She appreciated the beauty of San Francisco in particular, relished the ethnic diversity of the city, and was mesmerized by Chinatown. She also met fascinating people, many of whom became her lifelong friends. It was in San Francisco, the first city she visited in the U.S., that Kahlo began to fashion her indigenous Mexican identity, deliberately distinguishing herself from the local women, whom she called "scarecrows" and "dull." "The gringas really like me a lot and take notice of all the dresses and rebozos that I brought with me, their jaws drop at the sight of my jade necklaces and all the painters want me to pose for them," she wrote her parents shortly after her arrival.

Mindf*ck - Inside Cambridge Analytica's Plot to Break the World

'Please please please read Mindf*ck' - Richard Dawkins What if you could peer into the minds of an entire population? What if you could target the weakest with rumours that only they saw? In 2016, an obscure British military contractor turned the world upside down. Funded by a billionaire on a crusade to start his own far-right insurgency, Cambridge Analytica combined psychological research with private Facebook data to make an invisible weapon with the power to change what voters perceived as real. The firm was created to launch the then unknown Steve Bannon's ideological assault on America. But as it honed its dark arts in elections from Trinidad to Nigeria, 24-year-old research director Christopher Wylie began to see what he and his colleagues were unleashing. He had heard the disturbing visions of the investors. He saw what CEO Alexander Nix did behind closed doors. When Britain shocked the world by voting to leave the EU, Wylie realised it was time to expose his old associates. The political crime of the century had just taken place - the weapon had been tested - and nobody knew.

Engineer, Agitator, Constructor: The Artist Reinvented

How the modernist avant-gardes from Dada to constructivism reconceived their roles, working as propagandists, advertisers, publishers, graphic designers, curators and more, to create new visual languages for a radically changed world "We regarded ourselves as engineers, we maintained that we were building things ... we put our works together like fitters." So declared the artist Hannah Höch, describing a radically new approach to artmaking in the 1920s and '30s. Such wholesale reinvention of the role of the artist and the functions of art took place in lockstep with that era's shifts in industry, technology, and labor, and amid the profound impact of momentous events: World War I, the Russian Revolution, the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the rise of fascism. Highlighting figures such as Aleksandr Rodchenko, Liubov Popova, John Heartfield and Fré Cohen, and European avant-gardes of the interwar years--Dada, the Bauhaus, futurism, constructivism and de Stijl--Engineer, Agitator, Constructor: The Artist Reinvented demonstrates the ways in which artists reimagined their roles to create a dynamic art for a new world. These "engineers," "agitators," "constructors," "photomonteurs," "workers"--all designations adopted by the artists themselves--turned away from traditional forms of painting and sculpture and invented new visual languages. Central among them was photomontage, in which photographs and images from newspapers and magazines were cut, remixed, and pasted together. Working as propagandists, advertisers, publishers, editors, architects, theater designers and curators, these artists engaged with expanded audiences in novel ways, establishing distinctive infrastructures for presenting and distributing their work. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition, Engineer, Agitator, Constructor marks the transformative addition to MoMA from the Merrill C. Berman Collection, one of the great private collections of political art. Illuminating the essential role of women in avant-garde activities while mapping vital networks across Europe, this richly illustrated book presents the social engagement, fearless experimentation and utopian aspirations that defined the early 20th century, and how these strategies still reverberate today.

Touching The Jaguar

New York Times bestselling author John Perkins tells the dramatic story of how his experiences with shamans in Ecuador and Guatemala transformed him from an economic hit man to a dedicated decolonizer--and how anyone can overcome fear and take action. As a young Peace Corps volunteer dying in Ecuador, John Perkins was saved by a shaman who taught him to "touch the jaguar"--to change his perception of what he feared and transform it into energy for positive action. Then he became an "economic hit man," convincing developing countries to build huge projects that put them perpetually in debt to the World Bank and other US-controlled institutions--a new form of colonialism. Returning to the Amazon and seeing the damage foreign companies had done opened his eyes to the destructive impact of his work. In this book, for the first time, Perkins details the powerful influence shamanism had on his transformation to decolonizer. He discusses his work with native people in Latin America, including a previously uncontacted Amazonian tribe that touched the jaguar by uniting with its traditional enemies against invading oil and mining companies. Perkins also provides a strategy for us to overcome our fears, decolonize our minds, and collaborate in new ways to heal the wounds inflicted on our planet.
