Itália legszebb borgói - Toszkána
Olaszországnak több száz olyan kistelepülése van, amelyeket a fő turisztikai-kereskedelmi áramlások marginalizálódása miatt napjainkban az elnéptelenedés fenyeget. Az "Olaszország Legszebb Borgói" Egyesület 2002-ben alakult azzal a céllal, hogy előmozdítsa és népszerűsítse a történelem, a művészet, a kultúra és a tájak örökségét az olasz borgókban. Több mint 360 kiválasztott borgót foglal magában, amelyek annak a szépségnek és varázsnak a kifejezései, amelyben Olaszország vezető szerepet tölt be a világon.
Az olasz borgo szónak többféle jelentése is van: ezt a megnevezést egyaránt használják a kis lakott településekre, mezővároskákra, a kül- és elővárosokra, a városok régi kastély- és várkörnyékére, valamint külső és peremkerületére. Általában ezek azok a város- vagy településrészek, amelyek valamiképpen megőrizték a régi idők emlékeit, műemlékegyütteseit. A sorozat szerkesztői úgy döntöttek, hogy az ezeket ismertető magyar kiadványokban - bár idegen szóként, de magyar helyesírás szerint - az elnevezést borgó formában használják.
MI AZ A "BORGÓ"?
A szótár szerint a "borgo" szó szerinti fordítása a "falu" lenne. De a falu kifejezés nem fedi a szó értelmét, mert hazánkban ismeretlen ez a fajta településszerkezet. A "borgo" (többes számban: "borghi") egy lenyűgöző olasz kisváros, amely általában erődített, és keletkezése a kora középkortól a reneszánszig terjedő időkre nyúlik vissza. Általában egy kastély vagy egy nemesi palota körül emelkedik, és gyakran védőfalak, bástyák és tornyok veszik körül.
A Római Birodalom bukása után, a Rómát sújtó háborúk és inváziók ellenére a Szent Péter apostol sírjához tartó zarándokok özöne soha nem szűnt meg. A VIII. századtól az azonos nemzetiségű zarándokok a Scholae nevű egyesületekbe tömörültek, amelyek feladata az volt, hogy vendégül lássák és segítsék a Rómába érkezőket. A német zarándokok a saját Scholae körüli övezetüknek a Burg (erődített város) nevet adták, amely borgóra olaszosítva, a negyed neve lett. A következő évszázadokban ezt a nevet gyakran adták olyan településeknek, melyeknek piaca és erődítménye volt. Ezen építmények jelenléte miatt a borgó egyaránt különbözik a várostól és a falutól is.
