Master Pavol and his Altar

The Basilica of St. James in Levoča features a unique work of art: the tallest late-Gothic winged altar in the world (18.62 metres tall). It was created by master-woodcarver Pavol of Levoča (born around 1460, died between 1537 - 1542), one of the few medieval artists working in this region who are known by name. He was commissioned to work on a new high altar sometime after 1500, probably at the bidding of local nobleman Ján Thurzo. Creating this altar required several years of preparation and wood-carving work, not only by Master Pavol himself but involving all the craftsmen in his workshop as well. The altar was completed in 1508; it was the largest in central Europe at that time, and its retable (the vertical altarpiece) remains to this day one of the greatest artworks of its kind in Europe north of the Alps.
This guide to Master Pavol and his high altar will familiarize you with the life of Master Pavol himself, the background to the creation of the famous Levoča altar and the atmosphere of the period in which this important religious artwork was made, and it also presents a detailed interpretation of the altar's features. Another equally worthwhile part of the guide is its extraordinary pictorial content: a unique collection of photographs by world-famous Czech photographer Jan William Drnek.

A lőcsei Szent Jakab-templom kivételes műremeket őriz – a világ legmagasabb (18,62 m) késő gótikus stílusú szárnyas oltárát. V prvej časti knihy Na cestách po africkom kontinente nás Martin previedol viac-menej stredom a severom Afriky, a tak sa teraz môžeme tešiť na prevažne podrovníkovú oblasť. Okrem Malawi, Ugandy a Džibutska zavítame aj na viaceré ostrovy, ako sú Komory, Zanzibar a slávny Madagaskar, ktorý sa spája s údajným slovenským dobrodruhom a kráľom ostrova, Móricom Beňovským. Alebo to tak celkom nie je? Dozvieme sa. Absolvujeme tiež jazdu autom cez štyri krajiny (Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namíbia a JAR), nabitú prírodnými krásami a národnými parkami plnými divokých zvierat. Nebude chýbať ani doteraz najsilnejší Martinov trip do ťažko skúšaného Somálska, ktoré už od roku 1960 pravidelne zapĺňa svetové denníky správami – či už o hladomore počas vojny alebo napríklad o obávanej teroristickej skupine aš-Šabáb. A nezabúdajme ani na nebezpečných pirátov, ktorí ešte donedávna prepadávali lode v medzinárodných vodách. Tento kút Afriky určite nepatrí medzi obvyklé turistické destinácie, skôr naopak, akoby volal – vyhni sa mi, kto môžeš! Ako dodáva Martin: „Somálsko bola moja najemotívnejšia cestovateľská skúsenosť vo všetkých ohľadoch. Pozitívne a negatívne emócie sa predbiehali a bojovali o moju pozornosť. Bolo to ako šialená jazda na húsenkovej dráhe."
MARTIN NAVRÁTIL (1980) aktívne cestuje už od svojich 17 rokov. V minulosti pracoval ako turistický sprievodca, neskôr pripravoval rôzne expedície do celého sveta. Za viac ako 20 rokov aktívneho cestovania stihol navštíviť vyše 180 krajín sveta, pričom v mnohých z nich bol viackrát. Zameriava sa na cesty, ktoré nenájdete v turistických sprievodcoch, alebo trasy, ktoré neponúkajú bežné a ani špecializované cestovky. Je zakladateľom najväčšieho cestovateľského portálu www.travelistan.sk, na ktorom sa delí s čitateľmi o svoje skúsenosti z navštívených krajín.
