Decisions on Western Waters
The long-running Decisions Series tackles the Brown Water Navy. Armies of the Roman Civil Wars and Slave Revolts, 135 BC–AD 69
The year 135 BC saw the outbreak of the so-called ‘First Servile War’, which proved to be just the first of a series of conflicts that ravaged the Roman Republic during the following century and changed forever the institutions of the Roman state. This bloody and violent period of civil wars and recurrent slave revolts (most famously that of Spartacus) saw the ascendancy of many famous generals who obtained great military victories, including: Marius, Sulla, Crassus, Pompey, Julius Caesar, Mark Antony and Octavian. They fought for complete dominance over Rome but, at the same time, conducted a series of imperialist campaigns that greatly expanded the territorial extension of the Roman Republic. In discussing these campaigns of conquest, the author shows how they were strongly linked with the civil conflicts and how the events that started in 135 BC progressively led to the birth of the Roman Empire under Octavian (Augustus). The author also describes the only civil war taking place during the Early Empire, i.e. that of AD 69 (‘The Year of the Four Emperors’) before providing a detailed description of the organization and equipment of the varied military forces that took part in the Roman civil wars during this crucial period, outlining crucial developments across the period. As usual for the Armies of the Past series, there are dozens of colour photos depicting replica arms, armour and dress in use.

The Fight for a Supranational World
In the 1848-1867 period, the Habsburg Adriatic was contended by incipient nationalisms, particularly the Italian, German, and South Slavic. The Fight for a Supranational World focuses on Trieste, Fiume/Rijeka, and Dalmatia, where opposing nationalisms found themselves at grips with centuries-long traditions of municipal autonomy, dynastic loyalty, regional patriotism, and ethnic hybridity—all qualities enshrined within Habsburg supranationalism. There were attempts by nationalist activists to exploit ethnic and linguistic elements to form or join national states, but these largely failed until much later in the century. Contrary to the current consensus within nationalism scholarship, which is steeped in the notion of "liberal nationalism," The Fight for a Supranational World argues that in 1848 and the following years, nationalism was illiberal due to its exclusionary or assimilatory tendencies in its quest for cultural and linguistic homogeneity. This work also shows how Habsburg supranationalism, neglected within nationalism studies and political science more broadly, needs to be the bedrock for more accurate theorizations of nationalism that would prove the relevance of Elie Kedourie's and Eugen Weber's works, among others, despite Ernest Gellner's and Benedict Anderson's enduring popularity.

The Politics of Collaboration explores the initial fifteen years of the French protectorate in Morocco (1912–1927) when the independent Sharifian Empire ruled by a sultan claiming descent from the Prophet Mohammed was of political and economic importance to Britain, France, Germany, and Spain. Through European agreements and a treaty with the sultan, France finally established a protectorate over Morocco, a "new regime" that lasted for more than forty years. Hubert Lyautey served as France's first commissioner resident general in Morocco for thirteen years. Despite significant and costly Moroccan resistance to the French presence, Lyautey and his team of military and civil administrators sought to create a protectorate in collaboration with the sultan and leaders of the Moroccan state. Yusef bin Hassan, the sultan of Morocco, was both reserved and outspoken, mindful of his precarious situation but proud of his importance, an advocate and an opponent of French plans and the all-over French touch. William A. Hoisington Jr. reveals details on the working collaboration between Lyautey and Yusef bin Hassan, along with a new examination of the relationships between the protectorate's administrators and Morocco's leaders, the plans and interests of both France and Morocco during the protectorate, and the politics of this collaboration. The analysis that Hoisington provides in The Politics of Collaboration uncovers not only how the establishment of a protectorate in Morocco was a significant part of the Franco-Moroccan political sphere but also the social drama of empire in North Africa and the Islamic world.

In this book, New Caledonia, a strategic outpost in de Gaulle’s Free French empire and a U.S. stronghold during World War II, is a focal point for exploring the complex structures of power and resistance that arose from settler colonialism, Native dispossession, and the mass incarceration of Japanese civilians. Through rare letters from Japanese internees and interviews with their descendants, this book unveils the emotional and political struggles of mixed-race, Japanese-Melanesian children and families caught in the crossfire of racial settler coloniality. Drawing from military archives in Japanese, French, and English languages, this work also connects the internment of the French-Pacific Japanese to broader, global economies of racialized incarceration and labor, extending to Japanese American internees in the United States. Finally, the author delves into the fate of Japanese detainees sent to Australia, tracing their harrowing experiences from being perceived as enemy aliens during the war to displaced strangers in their postwar lives in Japan. This book goes beyond history—it is a call for racial justice. At the heart of Voices Beyond the Grave is the author’s global humanitarian project that has reunited descendants of Japanese internees living in Japan with their long-lost families in New Caledonia, resolving eighty-year-old historical enigmas while healing the wounds of wartime injustice. Voices Beyond the Grave sits at the interdisciplinary nexus of empire history and decolonial activism, charting new directions in transpacific studies. Canada in the Age of Rum
Awash in a sea of rum describes the years between the 1670s and the 1830s in the colonies that would later become Canada. Millions of litres of the sugar-based liquor were imported every year to supply a comparatively small population of colonists and Indigenous people. Why rum, and why so muc? um was cheap and plentiful. Intimately connected to the West Indian slave plantation complex, rum shipped to early Canada and around the Atlantic World was part of the early modern expansion of intercontinental trade known as the first globalization. Canada in the Age of Rum shows what happened to the vast quantities that came to Canadian shores. Rum was especially important to workers in the early Canadian staples industries. Fishermen and fur-trade voyageurs drank rum in massive quantities, supplied on credit and at grossly inflated prices by their employers, an arrangement that served to claw back wages and ensure the profitability of enterprises that would not have been viable otherwise. Traders deliberately sought to get hunting peoples hooked on rum in order to ensure a steady supply of pelts – alcohol was not so much a commodity for sale as it was a gift used to induce hunters to conform to the ways of the capitalist economy. However, Indigenous people drank rum in their own ways and for their own reasons; and when drinking became a serious social problem, they organized to resist it. The story ends in the 1830s when the combined effects of the temperance movement and the rise of whisky led to a sharp decline in rum consumption. This brilliant history follows the thread of a single commodity from West Indian plantations to Newfoundland, Quebec, and the west, revealing rum as a critical lubricant of the social life of early Canada and its particular version of early capitalism.

The Byzantine Abbot Symeon the New Theologian (949–1022) transgressed the homophobic norms of medieval Orthodox society. His longing for God was distinctly homoerotic, and he depicted union with the divine as a queer sort of marriage. His Orthodox theology of theosis, the deification of the entire person, meant that Symeon taught the salvation of all the parts of the body. But monks also desired the eradication of lust and the punishment of those who fell prey to it. Sermons and biblical commentary defined men who had sex with men as sodomites; and saints' lives warned of the consequences of same-sex desires. Those who renounced sex redirected their desire rather than eliminating it. Symeon's queer erotics shed light on other devotions distinctive to medieval Orthodoxy, including the veneration of saints and worship with icons.
