Bloody Streets: Armor, Artillery and Assault Groups in the Battle of Berlin
Bloody Streets: Armor, Artillery and Assault Groups in the Battle of Berlin is a comprehensive reference work on armoured warfare during the battle. The Red Army launched their final offensive in Europe with the highest concentration of tanks and self-propelled artillery ever assembled up to that time. Yet, they lost more armour in each day of fighting than during any other battle the Allies fought during World War II. Most of the armour losses inside Berlin were caused by a new German weapon known as the Panzerfaust. The hand-held rocket was employed for the first time in large numbers and revolutionized anti-tank warfare. The new weapon allowed anyone with rudimentary training, no matter their age, to easily destroy the largest armoured vehicle on the battlefield. To ensure the survivability of their tanks and self-propelled artillery, the Red Army evolved the Assault Group concept. The Soviets fundamentally altered the structure of their tank armies and related offensive doctrine in the aftermath of the Battle of Berlin. Many of the lessons learned documented by the Red Army at that time are still relevant to armoured tactics in urban terrain today. This book presents for the first time in English over a hundred pages of Soviet lessons learned on the employment of tanks, self-propelled artillery, artillery pieces, and the evolution of Assault Groups in the Battle of Berlin. German anti-tank tactics are detailed through the observations of the Red Army combat units that fought in the battle. Hundreds of large format wartime black and white photographs of Soviet and German armour and artillery illustrate this book. Each photograph includes a comprehensive description with technical details and historical context. The photographs are supplemented by over a hundred colour profiles, 3D images, and colour photos of surviving examples of the armour that fought in Berlin from both sides. Of particular interest are the graphics that depict the different Assault Group formations that formed across the First Belorussian and First Ukrainian Fronts in order to protect armoured units and overcome determined German resistance. Researchers, armour enthusiasts, and modelers will find rich new material about the Battle of Berlin from the unique perspective of armoured warfare. This is the first of several new volumes about various aspects of the Battle of Berlin, which build upon decades of research for the original Bloody Streets.

Northumbria's Bloody History
The book tells of the great battles, fought upon Northumbrian soil, which changed the course not just of regional, but of national history. The writer accompanies the reader along a timeline of events, a journey through 1600 years of Northumbrian history, from the Roman Invasion to the English Civil War.Inspired in part by the journals and collections of Victorian historians and antiquarians, the book recalls not only the clashing armour of England and Scotland but also the random acts of casual, everyday violence, affecting individuals whose names, unfamiliar today, have almost been lost to history. These, together with the ravages of the Black Death and the cruelties of religious persecution across Northumbria, complete the story of its bloody history.

The Book of Five Rings
The Book of Five Rings is one of the most insightful texts on the subtle arts of confrontation and victory to emerge from Asian culture. Written not only for martial artists but for anyone who wants to apply the timeless principles of this text to their life, the book analyzes the process of struggle and mastery over conflict that underlies every level of human interaction. The Book of Five Rings was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Thomas Cleary''s translation is immediately accessible, with an introduction that presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along with Musashi''s text, Cleary translates here another important Japanese classic on leadership and strategy, The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply to the way of the warrior.

Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest
An update of a popular work that takes on the myths of the Spanish Conquest of the Americas, featuring a new afterword.Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest reveals how the Spanish invasions in the Americas have been conceived and presented, misrepresented and misunderstood, in the five centuries since Columbus first crossed the Atlantic. This book is a unique and provocative synthesis of ideas and themes that were for generations debated or perpetuated without question in academic and popular circles. The 2003 edition became the foundation stone of a scholarly turn since called The New Conquest History. Each of the book''s seven chapters describes one "myth," or one aspect of the Conquest that has been distorted or misrepresented, examines its roots, and explodes its fallacies and misconceptions. Using a wide array of primary and secondary sources, written in a scholarly but readable style, Seven Myths of the Spanish Conquest explains why Columbus did not set out to prove the world was round, the conquistadors were not soldiers, the native Americans did not take them for gods, Cortés did not have a unique vision of conquest procedure, and handfuls of vastly outnumbered Spaniards did not bring down great empires with stunning rapidity. Conquest realities were more complex--and far more fascinating--than conventional histories have related, and they featured a more diverse cast of protagonists-Spanish, Native American, and African. This updated edition of a key event in the history of the Americas critically examines the book''s arguments, how they have held up, and why they prompted the rise of a New Conquest History.

Photographing Hellenism
Photographing Hellenism explores a collection of photographs assembled between the late 19th century and the 1960s by the London-based Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies. The collection functioned as a repository of photographs from the Hellenic World in the form of negatives, prints and lantern slides. The collection ceased to function in the mid-20th century, becoming an archive of material objects that was eventually dispersed to a number of institutions in Athens and Rome. Using visualising methodologies, this study looks at the nexus between photographs (both as objects and images), photographic collections, and the archive. It takes into account personal and cultural actions of the photographers, donors, and consumers involved in order to explore the evolving concept of Hellenism reflected in the images. During its active lifetime, the images in the collection were treated as empirical data, embedding telltale signs of how the Hellenic world was conceived. By understanding their object biographies and their socio-historical context, it is possible to demonstrate how the images encapsulate various stages of that evolving conception. In the present, their reception focuses on culturally determined re-interpretations, benefitting from access to photographic archives through digitisation.

While Israel Slept
A powerful indictment of the political and military decisions that led to October 7While Israel Slept tells the gripping inside story of how Hamas, Israel?s weakest enemy, succeed in launching a surprise attack on one of the world?s most powerful militaries. Through a detailed examination of the events leading up to October 7, 2023, the book exposes the intelligence and strategic failures that enabled this devastating invasion. The book unveils the dramatic events of the night before the attack, highlighting the cracks in Israel?s military and political leadership. It provides unprecedented details on how key warnings were missed, and how Israel ignored the growing threat from Hamas, believing that the group was weak and deterred. Nobody Men
The story of colonists who were neither loyalists nor patriots during the American Revolution, told through the experiences of one transatlantic family At least one-third of the colonial population were neutrals during the American Revolution, yet they have rarely featured in narratives that shape our ideas about the conflict. By following a single transatlantic family, the Crugers, historian Travis Glasson puts neutrals—the “nobody men”—at the center of this tumultuous period’s history. Like most neutrals, the Crugers prioritized peace above any specific constitutional arrangement and sought ways out of the military struggle. The Crugers were prominent among prewar defenders of colonial rights, and their experiences once the shooting started, in places including New York, the island of St. Croix, and London, reveal the complex dilemmas that confronted those in the middle during the violent upheaval. The Crugers’ dealings with each other—and with a cast of boldfaced names including Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Edmund Burke, John Wilkes, Lord North, and George Washington—illuminate how some people looked to chart alternate courses through perilous waters. Based on extensive research in the United States and Britain, Nobody Men humanizes what it meant to live through revolutionary civil war and recovers little-known but essential histories of how new nations formed as an older empire broke apart.

Hermann Balck, Hitler's Forgotten General
Though less famous than Rommel or von Manstein, Hermann Balck was considered by peers and enemies to be among the most talented German commanders of the Second World War. He was a veteran of the First World War, in which he served as a junior officer on the Western, Eastern, Italian and Balkan fronts and was wounded seven times. In 1940 he led the successful crossing of the River Meuse with dramatic consequences.Balck led from the front in the new and very dynamic and aggressive command style of Auftragstaktik- continuously touring forward HQs to brief officers personally, regardless of personal risk. He refused two offers to join the General Staff preferring to remain in combat roles. Balck was a pivotal moving force behind the growth of the Panzer forces. In 1942 he commanded a depleted division against massive odds, virtually destroying Soviet 5th Tank Army. He was rewarded with the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds (one of only 27 recipients) He briefly commanded Grossdeutschland Panzergrenadier Division and suggested Hitler was wrong in how the Waffen-SS was constructed. Philip Kay-Bujak argues that, had Hitler ignored Balck''s criticisms of the Waffen-SS and promoted him Field Marshal, Balck might have changed the course of the war on the Eastern Front. It was also Balck that nearly defeated the Americans at Salerno in 1943.Commanding Army Group G, in 1944 he came up against General Patton but could not halt his advance in Alsace. First sacked then reinstated by Hitler, he fought on until surrendering to US forces on 8 May 1944 to avoid capture by the Soviets. Post-war, as a convicted war criminal, Balck chose obscurity and refused to take part in US interviews but by the 1980''s he changed his mind on both and advised NATO on how to win a land war against Russia - his tactics are still relevant today.

Guadalcanal's Longest Fight
The Matanikau battles proved to be the critical turning points in the land campaign for Guadalcanal—the campaign's longest and bloodiest ground fight. A five-month conflict raged along the river and its basin. The real importance of this area has long remained unrecognized, yet the American and Japanese forces that fought over it knew that it was the key to the ultimate prize of Henderson Airfield. In this mile-long bloody tug-of-war from the river across to the hills and ravines were fought seven major battles and countless smaller skirmishes. While countless books have been published on the Guadalcanal Campaign; none have concentrated on the pivotal battles of the Matanikau basin. Extensively researched, this first indepth study of these important battles, objectively showing all sides, fills in this crucial missing piece of the history of the Guadalcanal campaign. The wellknown Guadalcanal battlefield guide Dave Holland spent three years walking the battlefields, researching, and documenting what he found. His unparalleled knowledge of the ground enables him to take the reader along with the men on the ground. Using his investigative skills and military background, he provides a fresh, detailed, and often completely new view of the land campaign, establishing previously unknown facts and specifically illustrating their significance as the campaign’s land turning points.

The Landscapes of Common Land
Commons are an important part of the English landscape. Survivors from a once more extensive network otherwise eroded by the inexorable progress of enclosure, they provide a taste of wildness, crucial habitats for wildlife and valued spaces for recreation. To many people they seem to offer a tangible link with happier, more egalitarian times, when communities controlled the land;or with periods yet more remote, representing fragments of the wilderness of remote prehistory. But commons are shrouded in misunderstanding and myth. They were shaped by local societies that were highly hierarchical in character, and always embedded in inequalities of property and power. Their ecology, moulded by centuries of intensive exploitation – followed in most cases by a long period of dereliction – has only a tangential connection with the truly ‘natural’ habitats of the deep past. And a surprising number of our legally recognised commons are not, in reality, common land at all. This innovative study, which concentrates on the county of Norfolk but ranges widely, is firmly focused on the character of commons as physical environments and places, as landscapes. Using a wide range of documentary, archaeological and ecological evidence, it discusses the development and management of commons from earliest times;explains their morphology, location and distribution;and explores why some examples survived the process of enclosure – and the distinctive traces left by those that did not. Above all, it describes the characteristic physical features of different kinds of common and explains how their ecology has, in innumerable ways, been shaped by history. Highly readable and copiously illustrated, this book will appeal to all with an interest in the English rural landscape, and will be essential reading for those with a particular enthusiasm for common land.

Carthage
''This is not only history reclaimed, this is history at its best!'' Professor Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones, author of Persians: the Age of the Great Kings Carthage was a power that dominated the western Mediterranean for almost six centuries before its fall to Rome. The history of the realm and its Carthaginians was subsumed by their conquerors and, along the way, the story of the real Carthage was lost. An ancient North African kingdom, Carthage was the home of Hannibal and of Dido, of war elephants and enormous power and wealth, of great beauty and total destruction. In this landmark new history, Eve MacDonald tells the essential story of the lost culture of Carthage and of its forgotten people, using brand new archaeological analysis to uncover the history behind the legend. A journey that takes us the Phoenician Levant of the early Iron Age to the Atlantic and all along the coast of Africa, Carthage puts the city and the story of North Africa once again at the centre of Mediterranean history. Reclaimed from the Romans, this is the Carthaginian version of the tale, revealing to us that, without Carthage, there would be no Rome.

The Minoans
Bronze Age Crete stands as one the most extensively explored parts of the world archaeologically, yet the island maintains an air of labyrinthian mystery. This book offers an authoritative introduction to the world of the Minoans, the first ‘modern’ civilization on European soil. With its grand palaces, a sophisticated bureaucracy complete with writing (including enigmatic, undeciphered scripts), exquisite gold and ivory artworks, unique and powerful depictions of women, and advanced urban engineering, including flushing toilets, this ancient civilization had remarkably modern elements. This book presents key features of Minoan archaeology, including architecture, art, religion, writing, bureaucracy and the economy. It also explores how this pioneering European civilization has influenced Western culture since its discovery, and how Minoan culture has been reconstructed, reimagined and represented in museum displays. This concise and up-to-date guide is essential for understanding both the history and the lasting legacy of the Minoans.

D’Ammaedara a Haidra
D''Ammaedara a Haidra takes readers on a journey through the different periods of Tunisian history, from antiquity to the present day, via the medieval and modern periods. Haidra, a small town located on the western border between Tunisia and Algeria, is the setting for this exploration. This study is an experiment linking history and architectural archaeology, with the aim of highlighting fragments of history, events, figures and the little-known heritage of this town and its region.Based on archival documents, various sources and existing studies, the book addresses issues related to the occupation of the site from Antiquity to modern times, taking into account the regional, tribal, socio-economic and security context, with particular attention paid to the ancient site. After extensive fieldwork, an archaeological and architectural analysis was carried out using various methods of building archaeology, focusing on construction techniques and materials, and culminating in an attempt at restoration. These two approaches, historical and architectural, have contributed to a comprehensive understanding of Haidra and its occupation over time.
