German Tanks in Barbarossa 1941

A detailed, illustrated study of Germany''s Panzer forces that invaded the Soviet Union, explaining how and why they performed as they did.Operation Barbarossa, Nazi Germany''s huge and fateful invasion of the Soviet Union, was the culmination of nearly two years of European conquests. By the time of Barbarossa, Germany''s Panzer forces had honed their Blitzkrieg methods of fast-moving warfare, but fighting across the wide expanses of eastern Europe would present them with their greatest challenge yet. While the Germans overran the Red Army at the start of the campaign, Barbarossa would end in failure.Written by one of the world''s experts on armoured warfare, and presenting newly uncovered data on the forces involved, this book explains the doctrine, organization, and technical capabilities of the Panzer forces, with a short overview on the armour of other Axis forces including Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Finland, and Italy. The speed and shock value of the Panzer divisions was essential for the Wehrmacht to prevail over the Red Army in a brief campaign of annihilation. Packed with archive photos and superb original tank illustrations, this book explains how problems with the Panzers were a significant reason for the eventual failure of Barbarossa.

Izabela the Valiant

A Spectator Best Book of the YearTrawling through a vast family archive and arcane sources in half a dozen languages, Adam Zamoyski has revealed the dramatic life of his great-great-great grandmother, an uneducated, vulnerable girl cast into a man’s world. Her aristocratic position enmeshed her in high politics and close encounters with Frederick the Great, Benjamin Franklin, Rousseau, Joseph II, Marie-Antoinette and Tsar Alexander I, and earned her the enmity of Catherine the Great. She lived through revolution and no less than five wars, in which her cherished homes were devastated, her possessions looted and her children scattered. Caught up in tempestuous love affairs which led her to nervous breakdown and the brink of suicide, exploited by her lovers, she remained undaunted and liberated herself through education. And, unusually for her time, she became a caring mother devoted to her children. She learned much by travelling extensively around Europe at a time of political and ideological change, and her observations, particularly on Georgian Britain, are remarkable. She gradually won the admiration of learned men and intellectual honours. She pioneered schooling for children of the poor and developed her own educational methods. Fascinated by the power of objects to kindle memories and arouse emotions, she was an avid collector of anything with a sensuous association and built two unique museums to act as teaching aids. This is a story of triumph over adversity and betrayal. It was not achieved by her looks: ‘I have never been beautiful, but I have sometimes been pretty,’ she wrote. It was achieved by force of character and resilience.

All His Spies

''Alford triumphs… in recreating the historical moment. By immersing himself in Cecil’s vast archive, he draws the reader deep into his working environment, capturing the closeness of his study and the chaos of the court… this is turn-of-century England as it really was – dangerous, gritty, on a knife edge'' The Times From the acclaimed author of The Watchers, the untold story of Robert Cecil - the ultimate Tudor spy-masterRobert Cecil, statesman and spymaster, lived through an astonishingly threatening period in English history. Queen Elizabeth had no clear successor and enemies both external and internal threatened to destroy England as a Protestant state, most spectacularly with the Spanish Armada and the Gunpowder Plot.Cecil stood at the heart of the Tudor and then Stuart state, a vital figure in managing the succession from Elizabeth I to James I & VI, warding off military and religious threats and steering the decisions of two very different but equally wilful and hard-to-manage monarchs. The promising son of Queen Elizabeth’s chief minister Lord Burghley, for Cecil there was no choice but politics, and he became supremely skilled in the arts of power, making many rivals and enemies. All His Spies is a wonderfully engaging and original work of history. Many readers are familiar with the great events of this tumultuous time, but All His Spies shows how easily these dramas could have turned out very differently. Cecil’s sureness of purpose, his espionage network and good luck all conspired to keep England uninvaded and to create a new ‘British’ monarchy which has endured to the present day.

Jim Crow: Voices from a Century of Struggle 1876-1976

W.E.B. Du Bois famously identified ''the problem of the color-line'' as the defining issue in American life in the twentieth century. The powerful writings gathered here reveal the many ways Americans, Black and white, fought against white supremacist efforts to police the colour line, envisioning a better America in the face of disenfranchisement, segregation, and widespread lynching, mob violence, and police brutality. Jim Crow: Voices from a Century of Struggle brings together speeches, pamphlets, newspaper and magazine articles, public testimony and appeals, judicial opinions, and poems and song lyrics from the end of Reconstruction in 1876 to the Boston busing crisis of 1974-76. This volume includes writing by both famous and lesser known individuals, including: - Frederick Douglass on the importance of voting rights - Ida B. Wells on the scourge of lynching - Richard T. Greener''s scathing critique of America''s ''White Problem'' - Booker T. Washington''s historic Atlanta address - John Marshall Harlan''s eloquent and prophetic dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson - William Monroe Trotter''s dramatic White House confrontation with Woodrow Wilson - Alain Locke''s tribute to ''the New Negro'' - Thurgood Marshall on police brutality in wartime Detroit - Rosa Parks''s appeal for justice for Recy Taylor - Earl Warren''s landmark opinion in Brown - Fannie Lou Hamer''s eloquent challenge to disenfranchisement in Mississippi - and James Baldwin on the myths and meaning of the American Dream. As the teaching of our nation''s history, especially the history of race in America, becomes increasingly contested, this book will serve as a vital resource, a crucial reminder of where we''ve been, how far we''ve come, and how long the road ahead remains.

What Is Ancient History?

From one of today’s most innovative ancient historians, a provocative new vision of why ancient history matters—and why it needs to be told in a radically different, global wayIt’s easy to think that ancient history is, well, ancient history—obsolete, irrelevant, unjustifiably focused on Greece and Rome, and at risk of extinction. In What Is Ancient History?, Walter Scheidel presents a compelling case for a new kind of ancient history—a global history that captures antiquity’s pivotal role as a decisive phase in human development, one that provided the shared foundation of our world and continues to shape our lives today. For Scheidel, ancient history is when the earliest versions of today’s ways of life were created and spread—from farming, mining, and engineering to housing and transportation, cities and government, writing and belief systems. Transforming the planet, this process unfolded all over the world, in Eurasia, Africa, and the Americas, often at different times, sometimes haltingly but ultimately unstoppably. Yet it’s rarely studied or taught that way. Since the eighteenth century, Western intellectuals have dismembered the ancient world, driven not only by their quest for professional expertise but also by nationalism, colonialism, racism, and the idealization of Greece and Rome. Specialized scholarship has fractured into numerous academic niches, obscuring broader patterns and dynamics and keeping us from understanding just how much humanity has long had in common. The time has come, Scheidel argues, to put the ancient world back together—by moving beyond the limitations of Greco-Roman “classics,” by systematically comparing ancient societies, and by exploring early exchanges and connections between them. The time has come, in other words, for an ancient history for everyone.

Cold War Civil Rights

A Choice Outstanding Academic Title of the YearHow the fight for civil rights in America became an important front in the Cold WarIn 1958, an African American handyman named Jimmy Wilson was sentenced to die in Alabama for stealing less than two dollars. Shocking as this sentence was, it was overturned only after intense international attention and the interference of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. Soon after World War II, American racism became a major concern of US allies, a chief Soviet propaganda theme, and an obstacle to American Cold War goals throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Racial segregation undermined the American image, harming foreign relations in every administration from Truman to Johnson. Mary Dudziak shows how the Cold War helped to facilitate desegregation and other key social reforms at home as the United States sought to polish its image abroad, yet how a focus on appearances over substance limited the nature and extent of progress. Cold War Civil Rights situates the Cold War in civil rights history while giving an international perspective to the fight for racial justice in America.

American Bloods

"American Bloods is an unflinching history of our nation . . . This is a breakout book for John Kaag?the natural extension of his genre-defining writing.? ?Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize?winning author of Leadership: In Turbulent Times"Kaag has a knack of stumbling upon treasures . . . The result is a thrilling and illuminating tale." ?John Banville, The New StatesmanA history of a family spanning centuries and continents?one that unfolds into a new portrait of America. The Bloods were one of America?s first and most expansive pioneer families. They explored and laid claim to the frontiers?geographic, political, intellectual, and spiritual?that would become the very core of the United States. John Kaag?s American Bloods is the account of a remarkable American family, of its participation in the making of a nation, and of how its members embodied the elusive ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. Inspired by the discovery of a mysterious manuscript in an old Massachusetts farmhouse, Kaag follows eight members of this family from the British Civil Wars in the seventeenth century through the founding of the colonies, the American Revolution, transcendentalism, the Industrial Revolution, the Civil War, and the rise of first-wave feminism, all the way to the beginning of the twentieth century. The Bloods were active participants in virtually every pivotal moment in American history, coming into contact with everyone from Emerson and Thoreau to John Brown, Frederick Douglass, Victoria Woodhull, and William James. The genealogy of the family tracks the ebb and flow of what Thoreau called ?wildness,? an original untamed spirit that would recede in the making of America but would never be extinguished entirely. American Bloods is an enduring reminder of the risks and rewards that were taken in laying claim to the lands that would become the United States, and a composite portrait of America like no other.

GSG 9: From Munich to Mogadishu

In October 1977, an unknown German police unit made global headlines by storming a hijacked Lufthansa airliner in Mogadishu, Somalia. Operatives of GSG 9 freed 86 hostages, eliminated three of the four terrorists, and emerged with a near-total victory. This daring rescue left the world in awe, including the U.S. military. President Carter asked, “Do we have the same capability as the West Germans?” The answer was no—and it was this realization that impelled the creation of Delta Force. This gripping book is the first comprehensive English-language history of GSG 9, tracing its roots back to the 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre, which exposed the world’s unpreparedness for modern terrorism. Formed in the aftermath, GSG 9 quickly evolved from a fledgling unit housed in makeshift barracks to an elite force. Author and journalist Martin Herzog draws from extensive research, German and international archives, and interviews with GSG 9 veterans and active members, including recent commander Robert Hemmerling. This deeply researched narrative chronicles GSG 9’s humble beginnings, the vision of its founder Ulrich Wegener, and the evolving strategies that have made the unit one of the best in the world. Covering the rigorous training, recruitment, and modern-day operations of GSG 9, this book offers readers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of one of the most respected special operations forces in the world.

Threads of Contact

Textile tools offer a fascinating and yet intimate approach to ancient people. Textile production has been one of the core activities for millennia, spanning from domestic production to royal needs. Textiles were light goods, easy to transport and often exchanged over long distances. Technology and know-how, however, might not have always travelled so easily. This work examines spinning and weaving tools from the Southern Levant (inland and coastal) and Egypt. The chronology of the study is broad, ranging from the Neolithic until the beginning of the Persian period (600 BC). The objects are investigated from both a diachronic and synchronic perspective to understand their evolution and continuity of use, as well as regional differences and textile production methods. The two areas present an only apparent discontinuity, as political boundaries gave way at various historical moments and the two areas had very close contacts, such as during the Second Intermediate Period of Egypt or the Egyptian domination of the Late Bronze Age. This seems to be reflected in textile documentation, which shows the appearance of Egyptian tools in the Levant, such as spinning bowls, and Levantine tools in Egypt, such as loom weights. However, the result is not so predictable.

Castles of Scotland

The story of Scotland’s castles is woven into the history of the country. These formidable structures have guarded the landscape since medieval times, and many of these structures are famous emblems of Scotland today. The royal castles in the strategically important cities of Edinburgh and Stirling still dominate their surroundings, but many others stand proud in more remote areas, often by lochs or the sea, on islands or in the mountains. Many simpler fortified structures were built along the border with England, and as the centuries passed many castles in Scotland were converted into country houses or even new houses were built in the style of castles. Today these iconic structures draw visitors from far and wide to explore a unique part of Scotland’s heritage. This fascinating portrait of the castles of Scotland will appeal to all those who wish to know more about the history of the country as well as those interested in the story of its castles.

The Iron Men of Shropshire

Though the Industrial Revolution was born in Shropshire, iron-working techniques had been known for millennia. However, it was an expensive undertaking in real terms, needing large amounts of wood to make the charcoal to produce the iron and objects that had to be beaten out in a blacksmith’s forge. Then one man made the breakthrough that kickstarted the Industrial Revolution: making iron in vast quantities using coke instead of charcoal. In 1709 Abraham Darby built his pioneering coke-fired blast furnace to produce cast iron at Coalbrookdale.Abundant iron and coal brought together men with a common purpose. Amongst them, Wilkinson and Watt developed the technology of the modern steam engine. Richard Trevithick built his viable locomotive here, whilst Abraham Darby II supplied the iron rails for it. Hazledine’s ironworks at Shrewsbury built the Ditherington Flax Mill, still standing today as the grandfather of all skyscrapers. Thomas Telford became surveyor of public works here, and built forty bridges in the county, churches, major canal infrastructure, and the London to Holyhead road.It was the technology and vision of these men that set the groundwork for modern mass production, which built our cities and all the complexity that sustains them, and us.

Irish Sea Lime Trade

Quarrying of limestone and converting it to quicklime was a major industry around the Irish Sea coasts for many centuries, and it is an aspect of these islands’ industrial legacy that has received little attention. David Johnson has spent years researching it in the field and in archive centres and has been amazed by its scale and geographical extent. Up to the nineteenth century, quicklime was shipped from Gower and south Pembrokeshire across the Bristol Channel to Devon, and limestone was shipped from both source areas to coastal lime kilns all along the west coast of Wales from north Pembrokeshire to the Lleyn Peninsula. Limestone was quarried and shipped from Anglesey to, for example, Harlech Castle when it was first built, and to the Mersey, as well as from North Wales to the Dee and Mersey estuaries. There was a major trade in limestone from west Cumbria to what is now Dumfries and Galloway and to and from the Isle of Man, and across the Irish Sea to and from ports all the way from Galway, round the south and east Irish coasts as far north as Ulster. Most recently, and still surviving, is the export of limestone from North Wales to southern England and Scandinavia.Thoroughly researched and with fascinating images, David Johnson reveals the little-known story of the Irish Sea lime trade.

War in Ukraine Volume 9

Soviet military doctrine long placed great emphasis upon the use of massed artillery and its use was honed to a fine art during the Great Patriotic War. In the early part of the Cold War this arm was allowed to atrophy in an era where it was expected that nuclear weapons would dominate the battlefield from the outset. During the 1960s, 70s and 80s however the Soviet artillery arm underwent a renaissance and large numbers of the resulting generation of weapons systems were passed on to the inheritor states of the USSR in the 1990s.While Russia was able to maintain its Soviet-legacy artillery systems, and introduce some new developments, Ukraine was much less able to do so and in particular lacked the levels of ammunition reserves and manufacturing capability of Russia. Inevitably, Ukraine turned to the West and began to receive weapons and ammunition from NATO and allied nations.Despite the critical role gun artillery plays in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, the technical aspects and histories of the individual artillery systems used by both sides have received relatively little attention in English, where they are often lumped together as generic ?artillery?. This book aims to rectify this deficiency in the accessible literature and examine the major tube artillery systems and mortars employed by both sides in this conflict.War in Ukraine Volume 9: Artillery 2022?2024 is illustrated throughout with original colour photographs and the @War series signature colour artworks.
