Název satirické i populárně vědecké knihy amerického astronoma Erica Schulmana nepřehlédnutelně odkazuje ke slavné knize Stephena W. Hawkinga Stručná historie času. Od velkého třesku k černým dírám (1988, česky 1991), která představuje reprezentativní a bravurně napsanou naučnou knihu o vzniku a vývoji vesmíru.
Schulmanovo gesto je zcela jistě výrazem obdivu ke kolegovi. Stojí přitom za to přečíst si Hawkingovu knížku současně se Schulmanovou, neboť můžeme porovnat základní ideje o smyslu vesmíru a života na zemi, které stojí za "seriózním“ a za "komickým“ výkladem. I Schulman vykládá dějiny vesmíru a vznik a vývoj života na Zemi, činí tak ovšem s humorem, ironickou zkratkou i množstvím literárních parafrází a aluzí od knihy Genesis přes W. Shakespeara, The Beatles až právě po S. W. Hawkinga.
I v Schulmanově koláži najdeme traktovány představy, že vývoj vesmíru řídí jako svou zábavu cizí vesmírné síly, představu, že ve vývoji života na Zemi jde o naplňování plánu jednoho paleontologického živočišného druhu ovládnout Zemi, či lehce ironizovaný sci-fi motiv Země jako předmětu pozorování a zásahů vyspělé vesmírné civilizace. Schulmanova knížka je klasikou v oboru humoristické či parodické vědy a touto klasikou komiky se může stát i pro českého čtenáře.

Atlasy hviezdnej oblohy
Pozorovanie, výskum a znázorňovanie nočnej oblohy je veľkou výzvou pre ľudstvo už od čias starých Egypťanov a Babylončanov. Táto kniha predstavuje najslávnejšie, najvzácnejšie a najpôsobivejšie hviezdne atlasy, aké vznikli od 16. do 19. storočia. Nádherné mapy známych i menej známych súhvezdí sú dôkazom, ako sa vyvíjalo poznanie vesmíru v minulosti. Ich podobu určovali fantastické vysvetlenia nebeských javov, ale aj pozorovania ďalekohľadom, ktoré bádatelia overovali výpočtami. A hoci sa tieto atlasy považujú z vedeckého hľadiska za prekonané, jedno im nemožno uprieť: svedčia o neúnavnom hľadaní krásy a vďaka použitým výtvarným a tlačiarenským technikám sú potvrdením ľudského umu a vynaliezavosti.
Realita není, čím se zdá
Jedním z největších problémů moderní teoretické fyziky je kvantování gravitace, které se snaží propojit tři pilíře moderní fyziky: obecnou relativitu, kvantovou teorii a statistickou fyziku. Nejúspěšnějším pokusem posledních desetiletí je teorie smyčkové kvantové gravitace, vypracovaná týmem předních teoretiků, do kterého patří i autor této knihy Carlo Rovelli. Této teorii se podařilo dobře definovat kvanta prostoru i kvanta času a zdá se, že nekonečně malé rozměry ani nekonečně krátké časové intervaly opravdu neexistují. K důsledkům této teorie patří, že realita není, čím se zdá: vzdálenost nelze dělit donekonečna, čas na fundamentální úrovni neexistuje, zmizí nepříjemné singularity z teorie černých děr a prvních okamžiků po velkém třesku. Nejlepším prostředníkem k seznámení s novým konceptem i jeho důsledky je tato výborně napsaná kniha: jednak proto, že ji napsal jeden z hlavních autorů celé teorie, ale zejména z toho důvodu, že Rovelli má vzácný talent jasně, poutavě a s nadhledem vysvětlovat nejspletitější fyzikální teorie. Kromě toho jde prozatím o jediné populární zpracování tohoto zajímavého a aktuálního tématu.

Coby dlouholetý vysokoškolský učitel, který ví, jak získat a udržet pozornost, dokáže navíc svůj výklad podat srozumitelně, svěže a zábavně; a výklad o fyzikálních jevech navíc organicky propojí s exkurzy do dějin klasického komiksu.
Kakalios na postavách jako Superman, Spider-Man i méně známí hrdinové jako Ant-Man vysvětluje fyzikální principy od gravitace a pohybových zákonů po kvantovou mechaniku.
