The Urbanist

An unprecedented look at the central role one man played in the transformation of New York City Daniel L. Doctoroff served as New York City’s Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Rebuilding between 2002 and 2007. In that critical time, he oversaw one of the most profound overhauls of the city’s environment in its history. For lovers of New York City, this book tells the stories of some of the city’s most transformative projects in a generation, many told for the first time, including new maps and diagrams created especially for this book. It provides behind-the-scenes accounts of significant projects such as Brooklyn Bridge Park, the High Line, Million Trees NYC, the development of PlaNYC’s blueprint for urban sustainability, the rebuilding of Ground Zero, the Lower Manhattan Vision Plan, and contributors include government insiders, journalists, academics, athletes, architects, and filmmakers, including Hillary Clinton, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Elizabeth Diller, and Doctoroff himself. The Urbanist presents the story of Doctoroff’s legacy, which includes creating new economic hubs in all five boroughs, reclaiming the waterfront with a series of iconic parks, supporting new museums and cultural institutions, and reshaping the city’s transportation network.

On Architecture and Greenwashing

Correcting insidious greenwashing practices in favor of long-term sustainability solutions With its reliance on extracted materials and an intense use of resources, the process of construction begs the question whether real sustainability in architecture and planning is possible. For some, a short-term solution is "greenwashing": adopting strategies of simulated commitment instead of investing in actual change toward fewer emissions. NGOs have called out large companies for “low integrity” pledges, pointing out the systemic ecological injustice that the built environment creates through material, wealth and labor extractivism. As institutionalized and commodified greenwashing hollows out the term, how do architects and designers position their work beyond a flattening universalistic understanding of sustainability? The first volume of a forthcoming series, On Architecture and Greenwashing is a collection of essays that presents a cross section of positions on architecture and its political economies, and explores ways to correct course in the face of the climate crisis.

Midcentury Houses Today

Traces the evolution of midcentury houses and demonstrates how they are experienced and lived in today This expanded and updated edition of the 2014 classic focuses on the concentration of midcentury houses in New Canaan, Connecticut, built by noted architects including Marcel Breuer, Eliot Noyes, Philip Johnson, John Black Lee, and Edward Durell Stone. This new edition addresses the issue of preservation and adaptive reuse as a sustainable architectural strategy. A representative group of 17 houses reveals an evolving legacy, now adapting to contemporary life. Each is examined in detail, with plans, timelines, and both archival and new photography, capturing the clean, minimalist look of the initial construction and re-imagining by significant architects of our time. Today preservation and renovation of older buildings has new visibility as a sustainable approach. As the National Trust for Historic Preservation has said, “The greenest building is the one that is already built.”

Protest Art

An essential guide to how the power of art has been harnessed to effect political change across the modern world, from the struggle for universal suffrage to Black Lives Matter. A well-researched, concise guide to protest art, exploring what happens when artists join forces with radical political movements to foster change. The works and movements discussed in this book emerged at times of great upheaval including war, colonialism, independence, and changes of government. They reveal how art and politics have been intertwined throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Jessica Lack adopts an inclusive and international approach, presenting examples from nations and societies around the globe, including Sylvia Pankhurst’s paintings depicting the harsh realities faced by women manual workers in early 1900s Britain; the revolutionary aesthetic created by Emory Douglas for the Black Panthers in the 1960s, which documented and galvanized the campaign for the rights of Black Americans; Nandalal Bose’s portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, which became the iconic symbol of the Indian nonviolence movement in the 1930s; and the Chilean direct action work that contributed to the collapse of General Pinochet’s government. Each of the nine chapters addresses different ways in which art has been used to effect political transformation, taking in humor and satire; performance and propaganda; art’s relationships to institutions, the media, conflict, and the state; and its uses as a weapon, a galvanizing force, and a way of refusing the status quo. Artistic acts, collectives, and movements are examined in their context, revealing how they have influenced other artists and changed the wider political and artistic world. 88 color illustrations

OP! Optimistic Interiors

AD100 and Elle Décor A-List Interior Designer Oliver Furth masterfully combines bi-partisan enthusiasm for classical and contemporary influences with California cool, to create sophisticated, livable spaces with relaxed rigor, infused with color and joy. Known for his timeless approach to design, as well as his irreverent ability to blend different styles and eras seamlessly, Furth combines his expertise in historic decorative arts and contemporary collectible design to create encyclopedic interiors where aristo-irreverence meets West Coast optimism. London

A lively new history of London told through twenty-five buildings, from iconic Georgian townhouses to the Shard A walk along any London street takes you past a wealth of seemingly ordinary buildings: an Edwardian church, modernist postwar council housing, stuccoed Italianate terraces, a Bauhaus-inspired library. But these buildings are not just functional. They are evidence of London’s rich and diverse history and have shaped people’s experiences, identities, and relationships. In this engaging study, Paul L. Knox traces the history of London from the Georgian era to the present day through twenty-five surviving buildings. Knox explores where people lived and worked, from grand Regency squares to Victorian workshops, and highlights the impact of migration, gentrification, and inequality. We see famous buildings, like Harrods and Abbey Road Studios, and everyday places like Rochelle Street School and Thamesmead. Each historical period has introduced new buildings, and old ones have been repurposed. As Knox shows, it is the living history of these buildings that makes up the vibrant, but exceptionally unequal, city of today.

Enlightenment, Culture, Leisure: Houses of Culture in Czechoslovakia

The publication is the first book to provide a comprehensive account of the building of a nationwide network of cultural houses, which were systematically established during the socialist period in the former Czechoslovakia. As places of public life in post-war society, these buildings enjoyed generous state support, not only economically but also politically and legislatively. Our interest is not only focused on their specific typology, but we also look at their educational and emancipatory potential as well as their role as a political tool for the organization and control of leisure. The publication also focuses on the search for the roots and programmatic antecedents of cultural institutions established from the nineteenth century onwards and in the inter-war period (association and national or workers' houses), with an overlap into the post-1989 period, when buildings and their operators had to, and sometimes still have to, cope with the demands of modernisation. The book covers both the Czech and Slovak context of the construction of cultural houses, which not only manages to cover the entire territory of the former Czechoslovakia, but also to capture the different historical experiences. The texts for the book were written by Jiří Andrs, Jan Galeta, Hubert Guzik, Katarína Haberlandová, Michaela Janečková, Laura Krišteková, Josef Ledvina, Irena Lehkoživová, Henrieta Moravčíková, Peter Szalay, Karel Šima, Jitka Šosová, Lukáš Veverka, Jan Zikmund, with a foreword by the leading British cultural and art historian David Crowley. The book is a combination of a scholarly book and a pictorial publication with images by photographers Oskar Helcel and Martin Netočný. The series of photographs divides the text into four parts, the first of which focuses on historical pre-images of cultural houses in the Czech lands and Slovakia from the 19th century onwards, and the second on the practical aspects of their construction during the period of state socialism. The third traces the history and changes of cultural houses in the Czech lands from the Second World War to the 1990s. The fourth section focuses on the same in Slovak territory and also includes two case studies, one from Slovakia and the other from the Czech Republic. The individual texts are accompanied by a number of contemporary reproductions, many of which are published for the first time. Graphics by Tereza Hejmová, Adéla Svobodová

Carlo Scarpa - The Complete Buildings

Featuring exquisite photographs of every structure the architect designed from scratch or incorporated into a historical building, this elegant volume is as sumptuous and inviting as a Scarpa interior. Although he was not widely known during his lifetime, Carlo Scarpa has in the past-half century become one of the most revered of modern architects. His passion for integrating the ancient with the modern, the natural with the built environment, and the sensual qualities of glass, wood and stone, makes him the perfect architect for this moment, when the preservation of historic buildings and sensitivity to environmental impact is of supreme importance. As authoritative as it is attractive, this book features balanced introduction to Scarpa’s work, weighing the opinions of both champions and critics of his work. More than 200 photographs and their accompanying illuminating texts capture the astounding beauty of Scarpa’s designs, allowing readers to experience the interplay of light, texture and line in a way that is second only to viewing the works in person. How to Enjoy Architecture

Charles Holland challenges us to look beyond the day-to-day familiarity of buildings to rediscover the pleasure of experiencing architecture Architecture is bound up with our daily lives but, for most of us, it is experienced as a blur of habit. Our reactions towards the buildings that surround us are often culturally generated, and we experience them in ways that are immediate but often mundane. How to Enjoy Architecture: A Guide for Everyone encourages us to move beyond this and, instead, really look at buildings. Renowned architect Charles Holland talks about the buildings and architects that excite and inspire him, and the ideas and principles through which we can engage with architecture. By breaking buildings down into categories such as materials, structure, space, and use, Holland guides us through drastically different styles and building types-from the satisfying symmetry of a Queen Anne house to the thrill of a high-tech tower, or the social ideals that lie behind a housing estate. In doing so, he demonstrates how looking at, experiencing, and using architecture can bring joy in itself.

The Eyes of the Skin

Explore the relationship between architecture and the sensory experience with the fourth edition of this groundbreaking work. First published in 1996, The Eyes of the Skin is a classic of architectural theory. It asks the far-reaching question why, when there are five senses, is one single sense?sight?so predominant in architectural culture and design? With the ascendancy of the digital and the all-pervasive use of the image electronically, the subject is all the more pressing and topical since the first edition’s publication. Juhani Pallasmaa argues that the suppression of the other four sensory realms has led to the overall impoverishment of our built environment, often diminishing the emphasis on the spatial experience of a building and architecture’s ability to inspire, engage and be wholly life enhancing. For a student reading this text for the first time, The Eyes of the Skin is a revelation. It provides a fresh, compelling insight into architectural culture which continues to inspire more than a quarter-century after its initial publication. The fourth edition of The Eyes of the Skin also features: The author’s latest views on the emphasis of place, unfocused perception and existential experience Updates and clarifications throughout, to reinforce how our sense of self in the world remains our most important sense with the greatest architectural impact An updated Foreword that touches on the current understanding of the seminal importance of the existential sense The Eyes of the Skin is a must-read for all architecture students, who will find its insights transformative.

London Estates: Modernist Council Housing 1946-1981

The most comprehensive photographic document of the once-utopian London council estate buildings The UK’s landmark Housing Act of 1919 catalyzed the rapid development of state-owned public housing in planned council estates. Construction of these estates has largely ceased since the Thatcherist austerity policies of the ’80s. Fast-forward a few decades and the estates have met various fates; some council estates are now considered notorious, while others are arguably the most desirable places to live in London. As the most comprehensive photographic document of the London council estates, this book features 275 estates from the City and every borough. A huge range of architectural styles are represented: from prefabricated and “self-built” schemes to Modernist and Brutalist designs, including over 30 protected historic buildings. There are designs from a broad range of architects, including Denys Lasdun, Erno Goldfinger, Basil Spence and many more. Kate Macintosh’s ziggurat-inspired Dawson’s Heights (1972) shares space with Chamberlin, Powell & Bon’s primary-colored tower Golden Lane Estate (1962). From the paltry to the posh, each estate possesses a fascinating history, and is emblematic of a distinct vision of urban planning. This book celebrates London council estates in all their diversity?championing the neglected alongside the distinguished, and honoring their immeasurable contribution to the social and architectural fabric of the capital.

Interwar

British architecture between the wars is most famous for the rise of modernism - the flat roofs, clean lines and concrete of the Isokon flats in Hampstead and the Penguin Pool at London Zoo - but the reality was far more diverse. As the modernists came of age and the traditionalists began to decline, there arose a rich variety of styles and tastes in Britain and across the empire, a variety that reflected the restless zeitgeist of the years before the Second World War. At the time of his death in 2017, Gavin Stamp, one of Britain's leading architectural critics, was at work on a deeply considered account of British architecture in the interwar period, correcting what he saw as the skewed view of earlier historians who were unable to see past modernism. Beginning with a survey of the modern movement after the armistice, Interwar untangles the threads that link lesser-known movements like the Egyptian revival with the enduring popularity of the Tudorbethan, to chronicle one of Britain's most dynamic architectural periods. The result is more than an architectural history - it is the portrait of a changing nation. As an account of the period that still shapes much of Britain's towns and cities, Gavin Stamp's final work is the definitive history of British architecture between the Great War and the Blitz.
