Constantinople

" This impressive book reveals the inheritance of a fascinating city before the reader's eyes. Christened "Constantinople" by Constantine the Great, the city successively served as the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires and commanded a key position between Occident and Orient for more than sixteen centuries. The wealth of cultural treasures that characterize the face of Constantinople today reflects this rich history. The Hagia Sophia stems from the early Christian era; the Middle Ages bequeathed us churches and monasteries rich in mosaics as well as illuminated Manuscripts and icons; and the cultural renaissance following the conquest of the city by Mehmed II in 1453 brought magnificent palaces and mosques, calligraphic treasures, and book and miniature paintings inspired by Persian and Arabic forms. The buildings of the Ottoman baroque period and nineteenth-century architecture complete the exceptional cityscape Istanbul boasts today. Richly illustrated and studded with selected literary documents, this book conveys a living experience of Constantinople in all its various aspects. "

Beyond Contemporary Art

Beyond Contemporary Art' explores an international group of artists whose diverse creative practises over the last decade have been instrumental in the development of the contemporary art world. The vibrant contemporary art scene is one of constant expansion and innovation, where artists are continually reinventing themselves and dissolving boundaries in artistic disciplines. Etan Jonathan Ilfeld provides an illuminating introduction which discusses the development of international art fairs, the growth of graffiti and street art as well as the technological advancements which have enabled the creation of iPhone art apps, virtual reality, synthetic biology and computer art. This visually stunning and accessible book emphasises the increased hybridisation of the art world, which spans disciplines ranging from science, design and architecture to new media, filmmaking and performance art. 'Beyond Contemporary Art' surveys the work of well-known artists, such as Damien Hirst and Gerhard Richter, as well as new and emerging ones such as Katie Paterson, whose projects attempt to visualise invisible forces such as dead stars and melting glaciers. This book reflects the playfully subversive nature of contemporary art and would appeal to any reader interested in the international contemporary art scene. Artists featured include: Mika Rottenberg - Argentina, Natalie Jeremijenko - Australia, Azra Aksamija - Bosnia-Herzegovina, Eduardo Kac - Brazil, Brian Jungen - Canada, Ivan Navarro - Chile, Ai Weiwei - China, Hrvoje Majer - Croatia, Katja Kublitz - Denmark, Banksy - England, Christophe Bruno - France, Aram Bartholl - Germany, Bjork - Iceland, Roisin Byrne - Ireland, Michal Rovner - Israel, Benedetta Tagliabue - Italy, Fumie Kamijo - Japan, Namhee Kwon - Korea, Mounira Al Solh - Lebanon, Julieta Aranda - Mexico, Alicja Kwade - Poland, Miguel Palma - Portugal, Anton Vidokle - Russia, Katie Paterson - Scotland, Candice Breitz - South Africa, Jeremy Wood - USA among many others.

Punk Press

The punk movement sprang up on the east coast in the late 1960s. It crossed the Atlantic and virtually exploded in London and Paris. This dynamic counter movement churned out heaps of photocopied, hand stapled fanzines that expressed ideas, music and works of art. Some became professional magazines. By creating its own press, the punk movement secured its place and its voice in the history of 20th century art and culture. The book Punk Press compiles the stunning graphics created by these publications, spanning from the East Village, to East London, to the Left Bank, featuring multiple collages, cutouts and handcrafted typography, standing as a visual tour through one of music's most influential movements.

How to Read Impressionist Painting

How to Read an Impressionist Painting is a new, original exploration of the hugely popular and revolutionary 19th-century art movement. James Rubin organizes his discussion by subject matter, rather than by artist, looking at urban views and city life, interiors and still life, family and friends, and other common themes. By avoiding an artist-based structure, and without the convention of a chronological approach, he provides readers with the tools to think critically and analytically about Impressionism as a movement, and offers a new understanding of the collective momentum that drove the artists to work with such originality and commitment to modern themes and pictorial originality.

American Modern

"American Modern" presents a fresh look at The Museum of Modern Art's holdings of American art made between 1915 and 1950, and considers the cultural preoccupations of a rapidly changing American society in the first half of the twentieth century. Organized thematically and featuring paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculpture, the publication brings together some of the Museum's most celebrated masterworks, contextualizing them across mediums and amidst lesser-seen but revelatory works. The selection of works by artists such as Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Sheeler, Charles Burchfield and Stuart Davis includes urban and rural landscapes, scenes of industry, still-life compositions and portraiture. Although varying in style and specifics, they share certain underlying visual and emotional tendencies. Cityscapes and factories are shown eerily emptied of the crush of residents that flocked to them, becoming both a celebration of clean modern forms and technological advances, as in Sheeler's paintings and photographs, and a reflection of anxiety about increasingly urban lifestyles and their consequences for the American individual, as in Hopper's iconic "Night Windows." Equally silent rural scenes are no less haunting, but perhaps reflect a nostalgia for seemingly simpler times, and a celebration of early American traditions and values. Featured still lifes are as diverse: Stuart Davis' bright, angular compositions marry fractured form with logos and patterns taken from modern advertising, while Charles Demuth's rich watercolors of fruits and vegetables celebrate agricultural bounty and his mastery of the medium. Works by Arthur Dove, Alfred Stieglitz and Andrew Wyeth, among others, suggest different possibilities in portraiture, and the diverse ways artists have thought about the figure and its absence as a way to capture their subject. This volume is a focused look at the strengths and surprises of MoMA's collection in an area that has played a rich and major role in the institution's history.

Age of Collage

Spontaneous, irreverent, personal. Collage fits more perfectly into our current age than almost any other artistic technique. The technique of collage fits perfectly into our current age. Raw visual material is collected by an artist and then combined in such a way as to abstract the individual elements enough that the artist's own vision becomes prominent. Because collage's references range from other artistic works and techniques to scientific images, pop culture, and erotica, these raw materials reflect humanity's collective visual memory and context. It's collage's broad scope--and irreverence--that make this technique so interesting for both artist and audience. So it comes as no surprise that a lively scene has developed around contemporary collage in the last few years. Our book cutting edges was the first to document work by this scene, which has continued to expand the possibilities of the genre. Beyond the lowbrow movement, which brings a fresh perspective to figurative surrealism, more and more established artists are now embracing this medium. Their work bridges the historical gap between the classic pioneers of the technique from the 1920s and today's vanguard of contemporary collage. Showcasing outstanding current artwork and artists, The Age of collage is a striking documentation of this new appetite for destructive construction. The book also takes an insightful behind-the-scenes look at those working with this interdisciplinary and cross-media approach. While illustration, painting, and photography continue to fundamentally influence collage, the featured work also plays with elements of abstraction, constructivism, surrealism, and dada. Collage gives artists more room to stake out diverse artistic positions than almost any other existing technique. Through confident cuts, brushstrokes, mouse clicks, or pasting, collage gives the impossible a tangible form--while turning our worldview on its head along the way. In their visual confrontation with reality in our digital age, which has already made geographic, temporal, and artistic boundaries obsolete, these artists celebrate and exaggerate simultaneousness.

Early Durer

Literature about Durer fills library shelves. Does this mean everything has already been said about the artist? Far from it, according to the scholars at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum and their international partners in the Early Durer Project. This book deals with the core phenomena of Durers early work, ranging from the artists biography and surroundings to the question of Durers role as the archetype of the modern artist. New sociological approaches allow us to interpret Durers ideal neighbourhood as a source of inspiration for the artists work, resituating Durer in the artistic context of his time, at an exciting crossroad between the imitation of traditional painting and the self-conscious renewal of his profession. Photographs of Durers early work, many of which are new and published here for the first time, complete the publication, which will establish a new basis for a modern understanding of Germanys most famous artist.

Basquiat

The legend of Jean-Michel Basquiat is as strong as ever. Synonymous with New York in the 1980s, the artist first appeared in the late 1970s under the tag name SAMO, spraying caustic comments and fragmented poems on the walls of the city. He appeared as part of a thriving underground scene of visual arts and graffiti, hip hop, post-punk, and DIY filmmaking, which met in a booming art world. As a painter with a strong personal voice, Basquiat soon broke into the established milieu, exhibiting in galleries around the world.Basquiat's expressive style was based on raw figures and integrated words and phrases. His work is inspired by a pantheon of luminaries from jazz, boxing, and basketball, with references to arcane history and the politics of street life-so when asked about his subject matter, Basquiat answered "royalty, heroism and the streets." In 1983 he started collaborating with the most famous of art stars, Andy Warhol, and in 1985 was on the cover of The New York Times Magazine. When Basquiat died at the age of 27, he had become one of the most successful artists of his time. This book allows an unprecedented insight into Basquiat's art, with pristine reproductions of his most seminal paintings, drawings, and notebook sketches. In large-scale format, the book offers vivid proximity to the artist's intricate marks and scribbled words, further illuminated by texts from writer and curator Carlo McCormick, a contemporary of Basquiat's on the New York scene, and curator and art historian Eleanor Nairne. Richly illustrated year-by-year chapter breaks follow the artist's life and quote from his own statements and contemporary reviews to provide both personal background and historical context.

Časování čáry - Timing the Line

Palo Macho (*1965) patrí k najvýraznějším predstaviteľom súčasnej slovenskej výtvarnej kultúry. Vďaka svojej experimentálnej tvorbe v skle a excelentným maliarským výkonom získal medzinárodné uznanie. Kniha prezentuje a analyzuje Machove líniové kresby na povrchu sklenených dosiek, kresby zatavené medzi tabule skla, kresby plávajúce vovnútri sendvičovou metódou vytvorených hranolov, tlače z dosiek skla (monotypy – vitrografika) a tiež plastickú kresbu vytvorenú cestou sklenených reliéfov (kresba sklom).

Art in Vienna 1898-1918, 4th edition

The artistic stagnation of Vienna at the end of the 19th century was rudely shaken by the artists of the Vienna Secession. Their work shocked a conservative public, but their successive exhibitions, their magazine Ver Sacrum, and their application to the applied arts and architecture soon brought them an enthusiastic following and wealthy patronage. Art in Vienna, 1898-1918: Klimt, Kokoschka, Schiele and their Contemporaries, now published in its 4th edition, brilliantly traces the course of this development. Klimt, Kokoschka and Schiele were the leading figures in the fine arts; Wagner, Olbrich, Loos and Hoffmann in architecture and the applied arts. In other fields, Mahler, Freud and Schnitzler were influencing the avant-garde. The book includes eye-witness accounts of exhibitions, the opening of the Secession building and other events, and the result is a fascinating documentary study of the members of an artistic movement which is much admired today. Some 150 color images and 75 black and white archival illustrations make this a sumptuous and historically engrossing study of a period when Vienna was the centre of the European art world.
