Jimmy Nelson: Humanity

A selection of Jimmy Nelson’s most sublime photographs highlighting the beauty of Indigenous peoples around the world For British photographer Jimmy Nelson (born 1967), traveling is part of his artistic process. His journeys are similar to field expeditions, with lots of preparation and contingencies to take into account. They can last weeks, if not months. Nevertheless, Nelson has found this part of his work the most rewarding. His travels to remote or inaccessible locations have strengthened his conception of humanity as one entity: having originated from a singular source in Africa tens of thousands of years ago. In Humanity, Nelson passionately shares why he uses his medium to replicate what he experiences in the field: when he finds alignment in nature and the people surrounding him. Nelson uses analog photography and 8x10 negatives to capture a symphony of experiences and a depth of emotions in his images. Through his spectacular landscapes and portraiture, his journey becomes our journey and Indigenous peoples, often photographed as an ethnographic subject, become the protagonists of a story of “unadulterated beauty” that empowers the beholders to perceive all humanity.

Why We Photograph Animals

A compelling visual anthology of one of photography’s most popular subjects, reframing our understanding of why we photograph animals and why photographing them matters to us and the planet. A visual overview of the history and future of animal photography, Why We Photograph Animals encourages us to think and rethink the way we have looked at?and used?animals and to consider our future relationships with nonhuman species. Multistranded, this book features the work of more than one hundred photographers supported by thematic essays that provide historical context; interviews with and contributions by leading contemporary photographers that explore their influences, methods, and motivations; and dazzling visual collections that present the very best animal photography from its inception to the present day. The result is a book that will engage those with an interest in wildlife photography and the natural world, but also those with a concern for the future of the planet. Huw Lewis-Jones’s expert authorship and curation celebrates extraordinary images by brilliant photographers, but also allows us to understand why people have photographed animals at different points in history and what it means in the present. Why We Photograph Animals is deliberately not a conventional history of wildlife photography. It’s an exploration of the animal in photography. It speaks to our ongoing desire to look at animals; to understand, misunderstand, and appreciate them; to use and abuse them; to neglect or come to value and protect them. 300 color illustrations

In the Beginning: Anselm Kiefer & Photography

The first book to consider Kiefer's photography and use of photographs in his wider artistic practice. Known for his monumental painting and installations, the internationally celebrated artist Anselm Kiefer's works are marked by a constant questioning of history and collective memory. Born in Germany two months before the Nazi capitulation in 1945, Kiefer's reflections on post-war identity, loss, and shared experience, nourished by myths and literature, create an unparalleled breadth of imagery. The use of photography as both practice and source material is a little-known aspect of Kiefer's art that has played a central role throughout his career. This book presents over 130 works charting the artist's relationship with photography, and his investigations into what images reveal.

Ruth Orkin: Women

Whether candid or posed, in black and white or color, Orkin’s photographs of women reveal her consistently sympathetic eye In 1951, her photograph American Girl in Italy?depicting a young woman on a street flanked by whistling men?made Ruth Orkin (1921–85) a household name. Now, a new facet of her work emerges through sensational never-before-seen negatives and slides. We meet Lauren Bacall, Jane Russell, Joan Taylor and Doris Day, but also waitresses, stewardesses, female soldiers and best friends. Whether gazing directly into the camera, looking away from it or even laughing at something outside of the frame, Orkin’s snapshots of women reflect their increased career mobility, consumer power and social influence in the postwar era.

Ruth Orkin - Photofile

Ruth Orkin (1921–85) always dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, and although that ambition was thwarted until later in her career, she quickly found other ways of engaging with the world of images. She was given her first camera at the age of ten and by the age of seventeen, she was cycling across America from Los Angeles to New York, documenting her trip in albums of annotated photographs. In the early 1940s she settled in New York, joining the Photo League and making her name with photo stories for major magazines such as Life, Look and This Week. In images that range from celebrity portraits to bird’s-eye views from her apartment window, from children at play to the experiences of a lone American tourist in Italy, Orkin’s photography always retains a cinematic sense of the passage of time and allows the humanity and charisma of her subjects to shine through.

Casa Susanna

Brings together a wealth of research and an expansive selection of photographs to create an enduring account of America’s first-known trans network, Casa Susanna. In the 1950s and '60s, an underground network of transgender women, gender nonconforming people, and men who dressed as women found refuge at a modest house in the Catskills, New York. Known as Casa Susanna, the house provided a safe place to express their true selves and live for a few days as they had always dreamed?dressed as and living as women without fear of being incarcerated or institutionalized for their self-expression. Casa Susanna opens up that now-lost world. The photographs?mostly discovered by chance in a New York flea market in 2004?chronicle the experiences of these women in states of relaxation, experimentation, connection, and joy. All of this was made possible by Susanna Valenti who?on her own journey toward womanhood?created Casa Susanna, a protected space where others could do the same. Supplementing the images, excerpts from the magazine Transvestia record a different kind of space where those who had been outcast by a rigidly binary society could connect. The people who came to Casa Susanna found a space where they could explore and celebrate their own and each other’s femininity, as they could not elsewhere. Their creations are also a reminder that there were, and still are, many ways to explore the boundaries of gender. 400 color illustrations

CBK: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy

The first book of its kind CBK: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy pays homage to her timeless style and legacy. The ultimate commemoration of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's style, fashion code, and the impact she left behind nearly two decades later. From private citizen to public figure, Carolyn, chose to use her minimal fashion as her sartorial voice while facing the camera. With her attention to detail, strict color palette, and deliberate unidentifiable looks, she was the essence of class - no label would ever define her. Marrying into an American political dynasty meant that she eschewed the typical patrician fashion standards expected of her and chose to define and modernize her look with avant-garde designers instead. Following her own rule book, she is the very definition of "stealth wealth," a moniker used today to illustrate the concept of quiet luxury dressing. CBK: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy gathers the greats in the fashion world to speak of her timeless style and presents never-before-published personal anecdotes and artwork from her fashion family in the 90's and today. Featuring spectacular photography from Sally Mann, Mark Borthwick, Nan Goldin, Glen Luchford, Peter Lindbergh and Jamie Hawkesworth; art by Jack Pierson, Hugo Guinness, Anna Weyant, Mark Tennant, and original interviews with Ann Demeulemeester, Yohji Yamamoto and Pieter Mulier of Alaia, Mario Sorrenti, Fabien Baron, Fern Mallis, and Tory Burch.

Joel Meyerowitz: A Question of Colour

Joel Meyerowitz: A Question of Color traces the experiments in color and black-and-white photography of the young Meyerowitz, a pioneer in the history of color photography. An early advocate of color photography, Joel Meyerowitz has impacted and influenced generations of artists. For fifty-eight years, the master photographer has documented the United States’ ever-changing social landscape. During the late 1960s, Meyerowitz carried two cameras: one loaded with monochrome stock, the other with color. Just how, when, and why American fine art photographers switched from black-and-white image-making, prized within the gallery system, to color photography, once seen as the preserve of tourist photography, has been the cause of much debate. In Joel Meyerowitz: A Question of Color, Meyerowitz tells the story of his early days as a photographer when he was told that serious photographers took black-and-white pictures. "But why," he asked, "when the world is in color?" He then bought a color camera and various rolls of film and began to experiment with color techniques: a passion he continues to pursue. 194 illustrations / 120 in color

Nero Dolce & Gabbana

Black, the most powerful and overwhelming color, is the symbol of Dolce&Gabbana and encapsulates opposite feelings that attract: sensuality and rigor, tragedy and love. But Dolce&Gabbana goes beyond the sartorial perfection of their clothes: it is first and foremost a way of being, questioning, and thinking. In this large format book, printed in black and white, the great masters of Italian and international reportage, who have portrayed Sicily since the 1950s, are contrasted with the most important fashion photographers, who have interpreted Dolce&Gabbana Black from behind their lenses since the 1980s. These include Sergio Larrain, Bruno Barbey, Ellen von Unwerth, Gian Paolo Barbieri, Mert&Marcus, Helmut Newton, Peter Lindberg, Paolo Roversi, and Giuseppe Tornatore. In these photographic masterpieces, which range from advertising campaigns to the most iconic editorials and shots never before seen by the general public, published here for the first time, the stars of cinema, entertainment, and the fashion system – featuring Monica Bellucci, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Jennifer Lopez, and Madonna among others – will alternate with suggestive portraits of ordinary people, in a constant dialog that puts Dolce&Gabbana Black at the center.
