All At War

In September 1939, thousands of German soldiers were turned loose on Poland. In 1940, they descended on Holland, Belgium and France. In 1941 they went to the Balkans, and then to the USSR. Armed with Leica and Rolleiflex cameras, some of these soldiers were officially commissioned as photographers, while others were asked by their commanders to snap records of events. Among them were trainees who knew about the Bauhaus, and other, older, men who could remember Weimar. Some excelled at formal portraiture, others were storytellers, stylists or humanists who wept at what they saw. The style and content of their work changed along with the collective mood after 1942, a change that is discernible in the photographs themselves. Celebrated author and art historian Ian Jeffrey - author of How to Read a Photograph and The Photography Book - has trawled through these albums, picking out the most compelling of these works to create an intimate record of anonymous lives experiencing the unprecedented.

Flanders

Proud towers, picturesque market squares with magnificent town halls, canals and bridges: Flanders owes everything to the sea and trade. With its cities like Bruges, Antwerp & Ghent, Flanders has been one of the most important centers of Western art and culture since the middle Ages. The traces of Flemish masters such as Rubens or Van Eyck are much a part of Flanders as the desire for pleasure and good food. It is no wonder then, then the creative Flemings also draw comics, brew 100 different beers, invent chocolates, cook masterfully and of course make the best French fries.

Good Pictures

A picture-rich field guide to American photography, from daguerreotype to digital. We are all photographers now, with camera phones in hand and social media accounts at the ready. And we know which pictures we like. But what makes a "good picture"? And how could anyone think those old styles were actually good? Soft-focus yearbook photos from the '80s are now hopelessly?and happily?outdated, as are the low-angle portraits fashionable in the 1940s or the blank stares of the 1840s. From portraits to products, landscapes to food pics, Good Pictures proves that the history of photography is a history of changing styles. In a series of short, engaging essays, Kim Beil uncovers the origins of fifty photographic trends and investigates their original appeal, their decline, and sometimes their reuse by later generations of photographers. Drawing on a wealth of visual material, from vintage how-to manuals to magazine articles for working photographers, this full-color book illustrates the evolution of trends with hundreds of pictures made by amateurs, artists, and commercial photographers alike. Whether for selfies or sepia tones, the rules for good pictures are always shifting, reflecting new ways of thinking about ourselves and our place in the visual world.

World Press Photo: Next 01

The Joop Swart Masterclass has been organized by World Press Photo every year since 1994 and has established itself as one of the most prestigious events of its kind. It has played host to some of the finest young photographers from around the world, bringing them into contact with some of the most established members of the profession of photojournalism. The masterclass owes its name to World Press Photo's late chairman, who was a passionate supporter of young photography talent. Since its inception, the masterclass has provided a springboard for participants destined to become the cream of the crop of photojournalists. To name just a few: Giorgia Fiorio, Kadir van Lohuizen, Jodi Bieber, Paolo Pellegrin, Olivier Culmann, Stephan Vanfleteren, Joachim Ladefoged, Balazs Gardi, Jonas Bendiksen, Pep Bonet, Tim Hetherington, Justin Jin, Lynsey Addario, Alexander Gronsky, Martin Kollar, Gillian Laub, Simon Roberts, Naomi Harris, Benjamin Lowy, Pieter ten Hoopen, Samantha Appleton, Alfredo D'Amato, Rena Effendi, Lana Slezic, Stephanie Sinclair, Mikhael Subotzky, Newsha Tavakolian, Olivia Arthur, Christoph Bangert, Kate Brooks, Alexandra Demenkova, Cedric Gerbehaye, Rafal Milach, Peter van Agtmael, Kathryn Cook, Dominc Nahr... At the beginning of each year, 18 independent selection committees nominate over 170 young photographers from across the globe as candidates for the masterclass, inviting each to submit a portfolio of work for consideration. After the selection by an independent committee, the twelve finalists are asked to produce a photo essay in which they give their interpretation of the theme chosen that year by the selection committee. An edit of all twelve participants' photo stories is made and published in the Masterclass book. During the 6-day long masterclass, six internationally known professionals from the world of photography dedicated a week of their time sharing their personal experience and expertise with the students. Each year, the program of the Joop Swart Masterclass is tailored to the specific learning needs of the students but in general includes: review sessions serving to evaluate the participating photographers' work and their approach, interactive group sessions on specific topics related to the experience and expertise of the masters, one-on-one sessions, editing exercises and the launch of this book.  For the first time, the book has been co-published by World Press Photo and Schilt Publishing. Schilt Publishing also produces the World Press Yearbook, which is published in seven different languages.

Cigani
