The Beauty of Ukraine
On 24 February 2022, the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops began. Since then, Russia's war of aggression has continued with increasing ferocity and destruction. Millions of Ukrainians have fled to neighbouring European countries. Ukraine is now a country caught between two stools: on the one hand, it is striving for rapprochement with NATO and the EU; on the other hand, good relations with Russia have also always been of fundamental importance to the country. This is a picture book about a landscape and its country, which is going through dark times and is currently moving the whole world. Here we take a look at the beauty and the integrity of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian landscape is characterised by steppes, plateaus, lowlands and mountains. Harry Benson began photographing Paul McCartney in 1964, when the Beatles took America by storm, toured the world, and made their movie debut with A Hard Day’s Night. A World History of Women Photographers
A magnificently illustrated showcase of the work of 300 women photographers from all over the world, from the invention of the medium to the dawn of the 21st century.
As in many fields of art history, the work of women photographers has often been overlooked, and few of their names are now widely recognized. However, women were closely involved in all major photography movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, and have used the camera as an extraordinary tool for emancipation and experimentation. These are artists who never stopped documenting, questioning and transforming the world, breaking down social boundaries, challenging gender roles and expressing their imagination and sexuality.
To capture the diversity of this global body of work, Luce Lebart and Marie Robert have invited 160 international women writers to contribute to this volume, which is a bold and beautifully illustrated manifesto as well as an invaluable work of reference.
Pavel Šešulka - Fotografie
Fotografické dílo Pavla Šešulky (*1945) vznikalo pouhé jedno desetiletí – v osmdesátých letech minulého století. Fotografii se sice věnoval dočasně, avšak s velkým nasazením, které je pro něj typické. S podobnou vášní byl v mládí profesionálním zpěvákem populárních písní, později rybářem, akvaristou, amatérským malířem a řezbářem. Publikace podává svědectví o jeho fotografické tvorbě, kterou v úvodní eseji Petr Klimpl zasazuje jak do životního rámce autora, tak do dobového kontextu fotografie.
Vedle začátečnických prací Pavla Šešulky přináší kniha ukázky z cyklu Lidé z města (před r. 1986), městské momentky, které se svým pojetím vymykají obvyklému frontálnímu snímání a vyjadřují osamělost městského člověka mezi jinými lidmi. Silně expresivní soubor z prostředí diagnostického ústavu mládeže s názvem Pasťák (před r. 1987) působivě dokládá dobovou iluzi komunistického režimu o výchově, resp. „převýchově“. Vrchol Šešulkovy fotografické tvorby tvoří soubor Zátiší (před r. 1990). Tento žánr, bohatě rozvinutý v klasické malbě, tradičně symbolizuje marnost, pomíjivost – vanitas, a v české fotografii je silně zastoupen v dílech Josefa Sudka a Jana Svobody. Pavel Šešulka ve svém skromném ateliéru sestavoval z běžně dostupných materiálů kompozice se symbolickými obsahy, které fotografoval, a vytvářel tak experimentální obrazy přesahující realistické zobrazování směrem k fantazijním světům.
V osmdesátých letech minulého století byly fotografie Pavla Šešulky opakovaně vysoce hodnoceny na dobových přehlídkách amatérské fotografie a publikovány ve fotografických časopisech. Jsou uloženy ve sbírce Moravské galerie v Brně a ve sbírce Svazu českých fotografů v Praze.
