A IX. század vége óta, amikor a magyarok letelepedtek a Kárpát-medencében, nem egyszer megváltozott az ország államformája, fővárosa, lakóinak összetétele, sőt maga az elhelyezkedése és a mérete is. A mindenkori Magyarország művészetét azonban jobbára ugyanazokkal a stílustörténeti fogalmakkal írhatjuk le, mint amelyeket a nyugat-európai művészet történetéből jól ismerünk. Az újdonságok többnyire uralkodói, egyházi kezdeményezésre jelentek meg az országban, minden korszakban találunk azonban valamilyen egyedi jelenséget, mint például a középkori falképek Szent László-legenda-ábrázolásai, az egész reneszánszon végigvonuló Mátyás-szimbolika, vagy a barokk vidéki rezidenciák egyik változata, a Grassalkovich Antal gödöllői kastélyáról elnevezett Grassalkovich-típus. A XIX. században itthon is megerősödött a nemzeti kultúra iránti igény, s hamarosan soha nem látott művészeti fellendülés következett, a XX. század első felében pedig már a világ élvonalába tartozó alkotások születtek, főként a fotó-, a plakát-, illetve az iparművészet területén. 1948-tól speciális helyzetet eredményezett, hogy a művészek nagy része a tiltott vagy a tűrt kategóriába szorult, és munkáit csupán félhivatalos kiállítóhelyeken mutathatta be, egészen a rendszerváltás bekövetkeztéig.
A kötet öt neves művészettörténész szerzője - Bellák Gábor (Magyar Nemzeti Galéria), Jernyei Kiss János (Pázmány Péter Katolikus Egyetem), Keserü Katalin (ELTE), Mikó Árpád (MTA), valamint Szakács Béla Zsolt (PPKE és CEU) - nehéz feladatra vállalkozott.
