Renaissance presence Hans Holbein the Younger, portraitist extraordinaire Religion, Renaissance, and Reformation - these three ideologies shaped the world of 16th-century portraitist Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98-1543), a pivotal figure of the Northern Renaissance, whose skills took him to Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, and England, and garnered patrons and subjects as prestigious as Henry VIII, Thomas More, Anne of Cleves, and Reformation advocate Thomas Cromwell. While he started out with, and maintained, a repertoire of religious works, Holbein is regarded above all as one of the greatest portraitists in Western art history. His probing eye was matched with a draftsman mastery of line and an almost supernatural ability to control details, from the textures of luxurious clothing to the ornament of a room. He combined this meticulous mimesis with an inspired amalgam of regional painterly traits, combining Flemish-style realism, late medieval German composition, and Italian formal grandeur to astonishing effect. During his time in England, Holbein became official court painter to Henry VIII, producing both reformist propaganda and royalist paintings to bolster Henry' status as monarch and as the new Supreme Head of the Church following the English Reformation. His portrait of Henry from 1537 is regarded not only as a portraiture pinnacle but also as an iconic record of this transformative monarch and the Tudor dynasty. Through this turbulent period, Holbein also produced anti-clerical woodcuts, and sketched and painted Lutheran merchants, visiting ambassadors, and Henry's notorious succession of wives. Koh-I-Noor

On 29 March 1849, the ten-year-old Maharajah of the Punjab was ushered into the magnificent Mirrored Hall at the centre of the great Fort in Lahore. Antická mytologie tvořila nezastupitelnou součást barokní nástěnné malby, neboť se stala očekávatelnou formou (nejen) světské reprezentace, plníc tak prostory většiny zámeckých a palácových rezidencí.
Šíře dané problematiky je obrovská, protože takřka všechny paláce a zámecké komplexy, které byly v průběhu barokního období dekorovány, nesou na svých stropech či stěnách mytologickou látku. V rámci publikace se pozornost obrací k výzdobám venkovských šlechtických sídel v rozmezí let 1650–1690, které ukazují, že mytologická tematika sleduje několik důležitých ideových rovin. Příběhy antických mýtů a postavy antických bohů odkazovaly nejen k narativním schématům samotným, ale reprezentovaly přírodní síly a pohyby astrálních těles, připomínaly odvážné skutky velkých mužů a ctnostných žen, a především plnily reprezentační strategie aristokratů 17. století. Objednavatelé skrze mytologické syžety prezentovali velikost svého rodu či vojenské úspěchy s odkazem na legitimitu svého postavení v rámci společenských a mocenských struktur. Giorgio Morandi - Late Paintings

Hang, well hung Chinese photographer Ren lets it all Hang out Ren Hang is an unlikely rebel. Slight of build, shy by nature, prone to fits of depression, the 28-year-old Beijing photographer is nonetheless at the forefront of Chinese artists battle for creative freedom. Like his champion Ai Weiwei, Ren is controversial in his homeland and wildly popular in the rest of the world. He says, I don't really view my work as taboo, because I don't think so much in cultural context, or political context. I don t intentionally push boundaries, I just do what I do. Why? Because his models, friends, and increasingly, fans, are naked, often outdoors, high in the trees or on the terrifyingly vertiginous rooftops of Beijing, stacked like building blocks, heads wrapped in octopi, body cavities sprouting phone cords and flowers, whatever enters his mind at the moment. He denies his intentions are sexual, and there is a clean detachment about even his most extreme images: the urine, the insertions, the many, many erections. In a 2013 interview VICE magazine asked, there are a lot of dicks do you just like dicks? Ren responded, It s not just dicks I m interested in, I like to portray every organ in a fresh, vivid and emotional way. True though that may be, the penises Ren photographs are not just fresh and vivid, but unusually large, making one wonder just where he meets his friends. In the same piece, Hang also stated, Gender isn t important when I m taking pictures, it only matters to me when I m having sex, putting him at the forefront of gender inclusiveness. Young fans eagerly follow his website, Facebook, Instagram, and Flickr accounts. His photographs, all produced on film, have been the subject of over 20 solo and 70 group shows in his brief five-year career, in cities as disparate as Tokyo, Athens, Paris, New York, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Vienna, and yes, even Beijing. He has self-published eight monographs, in tiny print runs, that now sell for up to $600.
