Literacy Theory As Practice
This is both a comprehensive overview of major theoretical developments in literacy AND a teaching guide with in-depth classroom examples of how literacy can be used in daily classroom practice. In this expanded and completely updated second edition, Handsfield introduces the most influential theories and models of reading and literacy—from cognitive and information-processing theories that underpin foundational skills to social constructionist and critical theories that support socially just instructional practices in today’s post-digital landscape. Eagles Have Flown
Young Festus’ family have been murdered and his home destroyed by the invaders. What should he d? ifteen hundred years ago Britain was facing the darkest period in its history. The Legions had left, hastening back to protect Rome. The great civilisation the Romans had built, the roads, fortresses and towns, were crumbling, and along the coast of Britain, land-hungry wanderers, beached their long-ships and killed all who opposed them.No man could trust his neighbour; all were afraid. All that is, except Artos the Bear, a leader of great strength who like King Arthur has become one of our greatest heroes.

Ecocivilization
“One of the greatest thinkers of our age" (The Guardian) presents a new way of living—one modeled on nature’s design instead of capitalism''s—for fans of Guns, Germs, and Steel and Doughnut EconomicsIt has often been said that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism—and yet that is what the historical moment urgently calls for. As climate chaos, inequality, and social fragmentation intensify, humanity faces an imminent choice: continue with a system built on extraction and endless growth, or reimagine civilization itself. Incremental policy improvements are no longer enough—we need a deep transformation of our current civilization to continue to survive. In Ecocivilization, leading thinker Jeremy Lent offers that reimagination, grounded in proven design principles of ecosystems and in humankind''s evolved inclination toward justice, mutuality, and dignity. What unfolds is a robust framework incorporating Lent’s own expertise, and the lived experiences of those on the ground already putting ecological civilization’s core tenets into practice—justice, mutuality, diversity, and symbiosis. From the global economy to universal housing and income, from infrastructure to agriculture, every major aspect of our society could be redesigned to work together as a coherent whole, setting the conditions for all people to flourish. Ecocivilization shows how this future on a regenerated Earth is not only desirable, but entirely feasible.
No Complacency
When Chris Bowlby’s son Ewan was diagnosed with a brain tumour aged 17, you might have thought football would be the last thing on their minds. But in the following decade in which Ewan faced growing threats to his health, the love of football they shared seemed to grow in importance. It was a kind of thread, defiantly holding some kind of normal life together, and a passion that prompted fascinating discussion about why a sport could matter so much. After Ewan’s death from cancer in 2022 Chris faced a choice. He wondered whether his lifelong love of football might fade. But gradually he found a way of including grief in a return to life, all of life. He understood as never before how much football had meant to him, how it had shaped the world he had lived through, and how it could now help him cope. Yet there was tension too. Was he now more aware of how the modern game might be leaving its humanity behin? his book explores that experience, ranging from top-level football to community clubs, the intensely local to the global, the women’s game as well as the men’s. It has football at its heart but is about much more than sport.
The God of Wild Places
A pastor walks out of the church and into the woods, in pursuit of the God he's lost. Millions of Americans, disillusioned with organized religion, yearn for meaning and transcendence in their lives, and many of them are finding that in nature. When pastor and theologian Tony Jones, PhD, had his crisis of faith, brought on by personal trauma and broken relationships, he sought solace in the outdoors—paddling a canoe, hunting with his dog, butchering deer. When he walked out of the church and into the woods, he left the orderly pews and numbered hymns for chaotic spaces and untamed wilderness. And he re-discovered God — a God who brings peace in the midst of storms, a God who lives in the community of our fellow creatures, a God who's acquainted with death. This is the God of wild places. In The God of Wild Places, Tony mines his own experiences, recent research in evolutionary psychology, and ancient wisdom from various spiritual and philosophical traditions to fashion lessons about solitude, the predator-prey relationship, the importance of place, risk, failure, and death, and the chaotic presence of God. Tony's guidance in The God of Wild Places promises to introduce a generation of Americans to the transcendence available only in untamed spaces; his writing draws on wisdom from Christianity to Buddhism, Kant to Cioran, Jim Harrison to Annie Dillard. This is a journey of loss and discovery through forests and fields, lakes and streams, from knowing to unknowing, from finding to losing—from life to death, and then back to life. This new paperback edition features a fresh preface from Tony, reflecting on the book’s reception and the continuing search for the divine in nature.
Strangers on the Shore
A genre-blending work of autofiction and memoir from the cult author of The Giro Playboy'Essential reading for new dads' LIAS SAOUDITotally sublime. Every sentence radiates' RICHARD MILWARD'A book that changes how you see the world' ALI MILLAR'A rare, companionable and gorgeous book' ROB DOYLEIn Strangers on the Shore, Michael Smith - author of cult classic The Giro Playboy, which captured the arty demi-monde of Shoreditch gentrifying into a hipster hellscape - stays one step ahead of the property developers as he stumbles through the uncanny psychic landscape of Hastings, in an astonishing work of autofiction that explores the experience of becoming a father and the disarming grief of leaving your youth and its dreams behind. The flâneuring Michael at the centre of the book has moved down to the 'dogshit capital of the South Coast,' started a family and opened a bar. He finds himself pouring wine in a 'drinking town with a fishing problem,' philosophising, procrastinating, morbidly obsessed with Aleister Crowley, who died in poverty in a BnB in this shabby seaside resort full of artistes and occult morris dancers. A book about what it is like to live on the margins, sliding into a precarious middle age in turbulent times, both giving up and starting a-new, Strangers on the Shore is deeply and unashamedly romantic, whilst also angry about the dystopian Britain we've sleepwalked into. Revered by Andrew Weatherall as 'the acid house Montaigne' and The Idler as 'Rimbauld on the dole,' Michael Smith has written an endlessly moving book of transcendent beauty about fathers and songs and the pleasures of an introspective life.

When She Remembered
When She Remembered showcases an intertwined group of seven influential women, from well-known figures such as Simone Veil to memory activist Sabine Zlatin, who shaped the production of Holocaust memory in France from 1945 to the present. Most of these women began their memory work immediately after the war by testifying at perpetrator trials and when monuments were commissioned. In the subsequent decades, their work transformed from personal memory projects to large-scale, politically driven initiatives. Through decades of engagement with Holocaust memory, these seven individuals ensured the stories of Jewish women were featured in the greater wartime narrative. In doing so, they deliberately shifted the French discourse on the Holocaust away from a focus on victimization and resistance to female agency during the fight for survival under Nazi occupation. Alongside other activists, these women became political actors by pushing the state to reckon with the legacy of French complicity in the deportation of Jews. Pulling from diverse archival sources as well as material culture and oral histories, When She Remembered convincingly reveals why the themes of gender, resistance, and memory continue to resonate widely in French history.
The Last Ditch
'A BOOK THAT ENTERS THE GAA CANON' THE 42'A MAGICAL-MYSTERY TOUR OF A GAA SEASON' IRISH INDEPENDENT'A cracking read ... a championship season as redemption song.' MICHAEL CLIFFORD"All the tension of a tight knockout encounter ... one of the books of the year." MIKE McCORMACKTwenty-one years on from his bestselling The Road to Croker, sportswriter Eamonn Sweeney set out to follow the All-Ireland championships around the country once again. But there was one problem. To make the journey, he would have to confront a secret fear that had quietly shaped his life. On the pitch, The Last Ditch captures the drama of a hurling season for the ages and a football championship that tested even the most loyal supporters - a landscape of unlikely triumphs, renaissances, shocks, cliffhangers and heartbreak. Off the field, it becomes something deeper: one man's reckoning with middle age, masculinity and a crippling travel phobia that for two decades had dictated the span of his quiet, rural existence. As he moves through towns, terraces and conversations, Sweeney discovers not just the unifying spirit of the GAA, but the possibility of reclaiming a life he thought he'd lost. Both an unforgettable sporting odyssey and a profoundly human memoir, The Last Ditch is a testament to how in Ireland, when all else fails, the GAA brings us home again.

Inherited Fate
'Riveting . . . This enthralling book will make you think more deeply about your own relationships, and the things that have been left unsaid.' MAIL ON SUNDAY'Immediately appealing . . . a welcome deepening of how we understand the human predicament and a pertinent antidote to the sometimes aggressive individualism of our time.' THE IRISH TIMES------The international bestseller. Our families shape who we are. From the circumstances of our conception and the family structure we are born into, to the expectations placed upon us and the love we receive, we are formed by our social and familial network. So if we want to truly know ourselves – to find out why we falter, to explain our anxieties, our repeated relationship patterns – we must look beyond our own lives and discover the secrets, unprocessed losses, and limiting beliefs of our parents, grandparents, and even to ancestors we have never met. In Inherited Fate, psychologist Noémi Orvos-Tóth invites the reader on a journey of self-awareness that spans generations. Illustrated with vivid stories and questions that invite the reader to engage personally, Inherited Fate is a fascinating framework for discovery of the self, the dismantling of inherited beliefs and the revelation of wisdom stored in the body. We cannot undo what has happened, but if we understand it, the past can help give a different shape to the present and to our future. Inherited Fate explores:the impact of the events surrounding conception and birth – such as the stress our mothers experienced during pregnancy, the expectations of our parents about our sex or our role in the family, or where we fall in the birth order;the far-reaching spillover effects of repressing trauma – both individual and collective;the deep marks left by the attachment pattern formed in childhood, and how it returns in the relationships of adulthood;how family secrets divide us, distort reality and destroy trust, even when they remain buried. ----‘Illuminating . . . A compassionate understanding of how we can recognise and reconcile the legacies we carry.’ Galit Atlas, psychoanalyst and author of Emotional Inheritance‘A deep and comprehensive look at the ways that those ordinary people we call “parents” unwittingly share their pain with their children; and how important it is for all of us “children” to be aware of such historical pain, and explore ways to transform it.’ Gwen Adshead, forensic psychiatrist and psychotherapist and author of The Devil You Know'A sage companion for anyone who has wanted, or needed, to confront the past and engage with the present. Inherited Fate is full of possibility and curiosity, and disrupts the avoidant gaze . . . Offers rigour to the ongoing conversation of embodied trauma.' And, yet, it is another world, full of beauty and possibility, too. After the sun goes down, insomnia and sleep paralysis do threaten. But some have always walked the nocturnal landscapes, with more or less confidence. Others have worked, night shifts and hidden night work: nurses, security guards, sex workers. And some have found solace in the darkness, from queer rave culture to religious pre-dawn traditions. 2G 95: Baukunst
The newest title in the 2G series delves into the world of the Belgian/Swiss practice BAUKUNST - committed to exploring architecture as a medium with which both to think about building and build ways of thinking Baukunst is involved with ever larger and more complex buildings, but their architectural practice has always maintained a high level of abstraction. Projects begin as theoretical propositions, and remain so, regardless of their realisation on site. Built or unbuilt, they all exist within some kind of Platonic space to which the architects keep returning. The selection of works feature in this issue is not an archive of their work, but rather a research atlas in which the montage of architectural drawings, site photographs, models and digital images speaks of the latent ideas germinated and tested across their projects.
The Price of Victory
The final instalment of N.A.M. Rodger's definitive, authoritative trilogy on Britain's naval historyAt the end of the French and Napoleonic wars, British sea-power was at its apogee. But by 1840, as one contemporary commentator put it, the Admiralty was full of ‘intellects becalmed in the smoke of Trafalgar’. How the Royal Navy reformed and reinvigorated itself in the course of the nineteenth century is just one thread in this magnificent book, which refuses to accept standard assumptions and analyses. All the great actions are here, from Navarino in 1827 (won by a daringly disobedient Admiral Codrington) to Jutland, D-Day, the Battle of the Atlantic and the battles in the Pacific in 1944/45 in concert with the US Navy. The development and strategic significance of submarine and navy air forces is superbly described, as are the rapid evolution of ships (from classic Nelsonic type, to hybrid steam/sail ships, then armour-clad and the fully armoured Dreadnoughts and beyond) and weapons. The social history of officers and men – and sometimes women – always a key part of the author’s work, is not neglected. Rodger sets all this in the essential context of politics and geo-strategy. The character and importance of leading admirals – Beatty, Fisher, Cunningham – is assessed, together with the roles of other less famous but no less consequential figures. Based on a lifetime’s learning, it is the culmination of one of the most significant British historical works in recent decades. Naval specialists will find much that is new here, and will be invigorated by the originality of Rodger’s judgements; but everyone who is interested in the one of the central threads in British history will find it rewarding.
