The River of Caregiving

Caregiving flows through a little girl’s family in so many ways, like a river connecting them all. Her grandfather cares for her by picking her up from school with a snack and a smile, and she cares for him by keeping him company at his doctors’ appointments with a snack and a smile. Her mother helps her grandmother get ready for the day, just as her grandmother once helped her mother. And when the relatives send packages to each other, their caring makes them feel closer. Through occasions big and small, it’s a comfort to know this river of love is ever-present, and her family will always be there for each other. Jocelyn Chung’s evocative text and Sarah Gonzales’ gorgeous pictures remind us that our family’s love is a gift to be treasured.

Seal of Rome

Every subject serves Rome. Only a few can save it. An aristocrat. A slave. A pair of disgraced soldiers. And a legendary general. Five strangers. One secret war. When an elite gladiator defies death in the arena, his shocking victory earns him more than glory—it draws him into the heart of a secret mission that could change the fate of the Empire. Hardened by brutality and betrayal, Jason is recruited into a covert task force to stop an insidious coup from toppling Rome from within. Joining him are Mallia, a senator’s daughter suffocating in privilege; Argus and Tacitus, ex-legionnaires cast out by the very army they swore to serve; and Severus, a retired general and the Emperor’s most trusted ally. Together, they are reborn as the Septem Fideles—seven loyal ones—and sworn to protect Rome from the shadows. As rebellion stirs and enemies close in, loyalties are tested, forbidden love ignites, and ancient powers threaten to awaken. The Empire's fate rests on the shoulders of five outcasts who must fight as one… or fall divided. Seal of Rome is a sweeping tale of heroes and villains, betrayal and sacrifice, forbidden love and unrelenting suspense—set against the brutal beauty of an imagined Ancient Rome at the height of its glory… and on the brink of ruin.

Nebulas

Poems that look at our little world from space In Nebulas, Meghan Kemp-Gee positions these giant clouds of glowing space dust, often the ‘nursery’ where new stars and planets are born, in an interconnected web of lyric form. As dazzling masses of matter and energy, fleeting, exploding and collapsing, creating connection across incomprehensible distances, these poems use constellations and light-years to reconfigure how art, mortality, loss, death, and afterlives are miraculous echoes and patterns in a gorgeous, chaotic universe. Included in this dazzling collection are an extraterrestrial fox who works at a gas station, meditations about living across from a hospital during the Omicron surge, weathering climate disasters in North Vancouver, strange deep-sea ecosystems, conversations with a space-god who may be Walt Whitman, and multiple retellings of a Zen koan about tigers and strawberries. Here, respiration and repetition – literally, verse – acts as an outstanding formal feature, a way of creating connections and shared breath across spacetime.

Before Disability

A literary, legal, and cultural history of disability, race, and citizenship between the Revolution and the Civil WarThe history of disability rights is often told as a recent one, but it is not. In the wake of the American Revolution, many of the differences we now call disabilities could be accommodated into citizenship—and for some even exemplified its promises. By the antebellum period, however, disability was becoming a powerful, racialized tool of civic exclusion and, by the century's end, a target for eugenic elimination. In Before Disability, Sari Altschuler tells the story of how this dramatic transformation occurred. Before Disability is a literary, legal, and cultural history of the relationship between disability, race, and citizenship. It shows how disability helped to shape US citizenship and, in turn, how the formation of US citizenship shaped disability. There were two key drivers of the transformation from accommodation to exclusion and eugenics: the difficulty aligning the reality with the rhetoric of civic inclusion and the co-opting of mental and physical difference as evidence in debates about Black citizenship. The stigmatizing ways race came together with mental and physical difference to deny Americans rights were, however, not inevitable. Before citizenship was federally defined in the late 1860s, Americans were still working out what it meant. They used the narrative forms available to them—from melodrama and the gothic to the slave narrative and the criminal confession—to do this work. While possibilities narrowed by the antebellum era, Americans continued to imagine, articulate, and enact broader definitions. As we seek to imagine the relationship between disability and citizenship more equitably and expansively for ourselves, we should begin by remembering that many disabled and nondisabled Americans before us did, too.

RHS Wildlife of a Garden

"One of the great heroines of wildlife gardening" Dave Goulson Foreword by Chris Packham First published in 2010 by the RHS, Jennifer Owen's book remains the most complete record of the creatures to be found in an ordinary garden. The groundbreaking research, in which Owen recorded every plant and animal in her suburban Leicester garden, will never be exceeded. This was no wildlife garden - the term barely existed when Owen started recording in 1972. Hers was a standard family garden in suburban Leicester. In this unique long-term study she recorded 2,673 species, from plants to insects, birds to mammals. She discusses diversity, abundance and annual fluctuations and relates these to weather, changes in surrounding land use and other ecological factors. Wildlife she monitored included butterflies, moths, beetles, hoverflies (Owen's specialist area), bees, wasps, ants, dragonflies, sawflies, bugs, spiders, lacewings, grasshoppers, molluscs and earthworms, as well as plants, mammals and birds. She also outlines the natural history of each group. Researchers in ecology, conservation, environmental sciences, environmental horticulture and entomology as well as professionals in urban planning will find this book invaluable. It is also a captivating read for amateur naturalists and anyone with an interest in garden wildlife. Dr Jennifer Owen (1936-2015) was an ecologist and zoologist. It was while working in Africa in the 1960s that she noticed her garden had more wildlife than the neighbouring rainforest, due to its mix of habitats. This prompted her, on return to the UK and a post at Leicester University in 1971, to begin the remarkable study that was to occupy her next 30 years.

Yellow September

"Multiple narrators add depth and texture to an engaging tale of loss and resilience." —Kirkus Indie ReviewsIn a heartwarming story of love, loss, and perseverance, debut author Shannon Terry Wiley chronicles the experiences of those in Shreveport, Louisiana, during the September 1873 outbreak of yellow fever, which ultimately killed over a thousand individuals. Weaving together fictional storylines and real history, Wiley paints a vivid picture of the unspeakable tragedy and the people who lived through it. Through multiple points of view, Yellow September narrates the fortunes of those in the fever-wracked town. Two brothers, George and Eugene, find themselves far from their Midwestern roots while working for the Army Corps of Engineers. Sent to battle a massive logjam blocking the Red River, the pair find themselves grappling with two very different commitments. Meanwhile, Katherine, a farm girl living along the Silver Bayou with her family, who are still grieving the wartime death of her father, faces a difficult choice with consequences that echo throughout her life. Others, like Dr. Dalzell, a pastor and doctor in town, and Eleanor and David, parents fleeing the fever, bring a nuanced perspective to the experiences of those swept up in the outbreak. With epistolary touches throughout, the novel is a testament to the enduring love of family—those we are born with and those we choose—and tells a profound story of duty, devotion, and community.
