A Sudden Stitch. Unfruitful Land. A Fever.In Milk & Moon-water, Milena Williamson uncovers 11 Old English metrical charms - ancient incantations spoken to ward off harm - creatively translating them into magical and medicinal spells for the modern reader.Alongside each reimagining is an original charm poem, a remixed and new telling of an old text. Covering the climate crisis, illness, ageing and fertility, this collection of charms ranges from the incantatory to the unhinged, and reengages with the ancient practice of looking to the land and the body for answers to life’s new and persisting questions.
Nobody But Me
A young child journeys toward independence in this award-winning picture book, "visual narrative of the highest level."* With richly evocative art by a two-time winner of NY Times’ Best Illustrated Books, here is a story of separation and return.After a young boy unties the knot anchoring his small boat near his mother, he slips away from her on a gentle tide, floating off on a quiet and peaceful journey through town, jungle, and city. When he floats back to the beach—was it a few hours? a few minutes?—his mother is there at the water''s edge right where he left her. Perhaps it was a dream? And yet he has returned from his solo adventure with a gift pressed into his palm, a tiny seed that when planted will grow on its own.Separation from a parent, whether for a long period or just a few minutes, can fill a child with anxiety, but at other times that same child may long to do things on their own. Using gouache, collage and watercolor, Lundberg''s stunning illustrations in Nobody But Me convey both the child’s agency and the unbreakable bond with his mother. Here is a story that will bring joy to young and old readers alike. 4-7 years."The author invite us to witness the magic of a perfect childhood [story].”***August Prize jury**Special Mention Bologna Ragazzi Awards 2025, Fiction

Ourika, Édouard, and Olivier
''I have no secrets; my unhappiness is the story of my entire life.''A key figure in the literary world of post-Revolutionary Paris, Claire de Duras was a writer of exceptional talent, admired by Sainte-Beuve and Goethe, imitated by Stendhal, and influencing later writers such as Fromentin, Ourika describes the discrimination suffered by a young Black woman brought up in an aristocratic French family, her unconscious adoption of this racial disdain, and her redemption by faith. Édouard charts the impossibility of the bourgeois hero''s love for the daughter of the aristocratic family into which he has been adopted on his parents'' death. In the epistolary Olivier, the two central protagonists, clearly in love, are nevertheless prevented from marriage by Olivier''s secret. Now accepted as integral to French Romanticism and the history of women''s writing, the narratives showcase Duras''s empathy with the exceptional, the outcast, and the victims of social injustice, providing pioneering studies in race, class, and sexuality. Chris Miller''s new translations into English are accompanied by an introduction and notes by Pratima Prasad, highlighting major themes in the texts.
A Perimenopauza másképp lapjain dr. Mary Claire Haver, a nők egészségügyi szemléletváltásának úttörője végre világos, tudományosan alátámasztott válaszokat ad.
• megértsük, pontosan mi is történik a testünkben a ciklusváltozásoktól az energiaszint, a hangulat, az alvás és a szexuális egészség válozásaiig;
• felismerjük, hogy a most meghozott döntések alkotják a későbbi egészségünk alapjait;
• felkészülten és határozottan kommunikálhassunk az orvossal ellenőrzőlisták és konkrét kérdések segítségével;
Amíg a nyár véget ér

Basque Witch-Hunt
2025 AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PUBLISHERS PROSE AWARDS WINNER: EUROPEAN HISTORYIn June 1609, two judges left Bordeaux for a territory at the very edge of their jurisdiction, a Basque-speaking province on the Atlantic coast called the Pays de Labourd. In four months, they executed up to 80 women and men for the crime of witchcraft, causing a wave of suspects to flee into Spain and sparking terror there. Witnesses, many of them children, described lurid tales of cannibalism, vampirism, and demonic sex. One of the judges, Pierre de Lancre, published a sensationalist account of this diabolical netherworld. With other accounts seemingly destroyed, this witch-hunt – France''s largest – has always been seen through de Lancre’s eyes. The narrative, re-told over the centuries, is that of a witch-hunt caused by a bigoted outsider. Newly discovered evidence paints a very different, still darker picture, revealing a secret history underneath de Lancre’s well-known tale. Far from an outside imposition, witchcraft was a home-grown problem. Panic had been building up over a number of years and the region was fractured by factionalism and a struggle over scarce resources. The Basque Witch-Hunt reveals that de Lancre was no outsider; he was a local partisan, married into the Basque nobility. Living at the Franco-Spanish border, the Basques were victims of geography. Geo-politics caused a local conflict which made the witch-hunt inevitable. The same forces eventually sent thousands of religious refugees from Spain to France where they, in turn, became new objects of popular fear and anger. The Basque witch-hunt is justly infamous. This book shows that almost everything historians thought they knew about it is wrong.
Wittgenstein on Belief Formation
This Element traces the development of Wittgenstein's views on belief formation throughout the different phases of his philosophy. Section 1 concentrates on the Tractarian period, where the sparse references to belief consist primarily of reactions to Russell. The logical purism of the early Wittgenstein led him to reject psychological stances such as those found in Russell's epistemological works. Section 2 explores Wittgenstein's 'middle' period, focusing on his evolving views on belief formation, influenced by his shift to viewing language as a social practice. It addresses key texts, including The Big Typescript and 'Cause and Effect', and links the psychological mechanisms of belief to Wittgenstein's later grammatical investigations in an analysis that extends to his reflections on mathematics and religion. Section 3 reconstructs the intellectual trajectory that would culminate in On Certainty, tracing the influence of Moore and Newman on the range of belief-forming processes Wittgenstein examines in his final writings.
The Secret History of Sharks
'Will keep you on the edge of your seat from its first page to its last page' -Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs, and SteelFrom ancient megalodons to fearsome Great Whites, this book tells the complete, untold story of how sharks emerged as Earth's ultimate survivors, by world-leading paleontologist John Long. Sharks have been fighting for their lives for 500 million years and today are under dire threat. They are the longest-surviving vertebrate on Earth, outlasting multiple mass extinction events that decimated life on the planet. But how did they thrive for so long? By developing superpower-like abilities that allowed them to ascend to the top of the oceanic food chain. John Long, who for decades has been on the cutting edge of shark research, weaves a thrilling story of sharks' unparalleled reign. The Secret History of Sharks showcases the global search to discover sharks' largely unknown evolution, led by Long and dozens of other extraordinary scientists. As the tale unfolds, Long introduces an enormous range of astonishing organisms: a thirty-foot-long shark with a deadly saw blade of jagged teeth protruding from its lower jaws and bizarre sharks fossilized while in their mating ritual. With insights into the threats to sharks today, how they contribute to medical advances, and the lessons they can teach us about our own survival, The Secret History of Sharks is a riveting look at scientific discovery with ramifications far beyond the ocean. 'This book is the work of a master scientist and storyteller. It will make you see sharks in a new way: not as blood-thirsty monsters that we should fear, but as nature's ultimate survivors' - Steve Brusatte, New York Times bestselling author of The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs'Readers will want to sink their teeth into this' - Publishers Weekly'Thoroughly researched and wonderfully narrated, The Secret History of Sharks makes a convincing case that the story of sharks is nothing less than the story of life on Earth. Highly recommended!' - Nate Blakeslee, New York Times bestselling author of American Wolf
