Churches of Newcastle and North Tyneside

The city of Newcastle upon Tyne and the towns and villages of North Tyneside, including Wallsend, North Shields, Killingworth, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, were important settlements in the mediaeval era but the shipping trade and growing industrialisation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries saw the population in the area increase rapidly. Alongside the ancient churches, many more churches were built to support those communities and today, the churches of both boroughs act as significant historic records of the architecture, cycle of life, and the growth of Christian faith in the region. The churches have become recognized as a part of the landscape. In addition, many visitors are drawn today to the pilgrimage routes that pass through this area, some centred on Newcastle Cathedral. This fascinating picture of an important part of the history of Newcastle and North Tyneside over the centuries will be of interest to all those who live in or are visiting this part of the country.

French Navy 1939–42

An authoritative, illustrated analysis of the official French Navy in World War II, under the command of the Third Republic and of Vichy. At the outbreak of World War II, the Marine Nationale was the most powerful navy in continental Europe, unified in its purpose of defending the nation and the colonial empire. It was the product of the unique 1920s–30s French naval doctrine and armaments development, as a continental power with worldwide interests. The fall of France shattered this unity, as the fleet split between loyalty to Vichy and Free France. In this book, Hugues Canuel presents a sharp, focused operational study of the official French Navy in World War II, from action alongside its British allies in 1939–40 to the fiery end of the Vichy fleet in Toulon harbour in 1942. Based on a wealth of French, British, and American archive material and drawing on the author's years of research, it explores France's warships and their capabilities, the roles the fleet was structured to perform, and the combat they saw – including operations off Norway and tackling German raiders in the Atlantic, operations in Indochina, and the battle with the Allies in Operation Torch. Illustrated throughout with rare photos, spectacular battlescenes, 3D diagrams of engagements and fleet formations, and a map of France’s naval responsibilities, this book is an essential guide to one of the least-known major navies of World War II.

50 Gems of Bedfordshire

Bedfordshire may be amongst England’s smallest counties but its 700,000 residents and increasing numbers of visitors have a wealth of places to explore within its boundaries. Alongside the urban areas of Luton and Bedford, the county offers plenty of green spaces, including the Chiltern Hills. The county has connections with John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim’s Progress, Catherine of Aragon and the Whitbread family, dating back some 250 years when the brewing pioneer was MP for Bedford. In this book local authors John and Jenny Jackson reveal the vital role a Bedfordshire barn played during World War, exactly why Luton Town Football Club are appropriately nicknamed ‘The Hatters’, the churchyard that inspired J. M. Barrie’s character, Wendy, in Peter Pan, and much more.50 Gems of Bedfordshire explores the many places and their history that make this part of the country so special, including natural features, towns and villages, buildings and places of historical interest. Alongside justly famous attractions, others will be relatively unknown but all have an interesting story to tell.

Dream Logic

Last night I dreamt I was Emily BronteI was hanging linen on the line, washed the old-fashioned way ... Lost moments and memories provide a window onto a time before the present, a place where the past is full and vivid yet never quite within reach. This is a search for something missing but unknown, a farewell without being certain it is goodbye. Satya Bosman sets out on a journey through myth and relationships, interior lives and everyday moments, carrying an alluring feeling of connection that lingers on the edge of the senses as we ask - is this where I belong? Full of longing, Dream Logic opens the space between loss and renewal, where the idea of what might have been weaves through real memory, and becomes just as powerful. *Praise for Satya Bosman* ‘[Satya Bosman] brings to this debutthe assurance of a poet attuned to nuance and silence … Lyrical yetgrounded, Dream Logic invites readers to linger in the spaces betweenthings — where absence hums with meaning, and where the boundaries between thereal and the remembered dissolve into something tender, uncertain, and true’ – The Madrid Review  'Funny and odd and charming ... This felt alive, it carried me along and left me wanting more' - Ella Frears, judge of the Kent & Sussex Poetry Society Annual Folio Competition 2025 on her prize-winning entry About the Author:Satya Bosman is the founder and co-editor of the Black Cat Poetry Press. Arriva The Shires

Serving the main towns of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and South Bedfordshire and with Green Line routes into Central London, Arriva The Shires had around 350 vehicles by the early 2010s. In 2013, the Milton Keynes fleet was absorbed into The Shires licence, around the same time as a guided busway opened between Luton and Dunstable. Following Arriva’s changes to management and licences, the Hertfordshire operations and garages moved to Kent Thameside in 2016. At the same time, the London-contracted services passed with Watford Garage to Arriva London North, leaving the company to serve south Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. It was all change again in 2024 with the closure of Aylesbury and High Wycombe garages, leaving a much-slimmed-down fleet based in Luton and Milton Keynes on the Shires licence. With 180 colour images and informative captions, Gary Seamarks details the vehicles operated over the last twenty-five years, many of which have cascaded in from the Midlands fleet, along with new rolling stock for use on the Luton Busway and the Green Line 757 between Luton and its airport into Central London.
