Graveyard of Champions

As the 1970s began, Shirley Crabtree (Big Daddy) was a semi-retired wrestler, aged 40; the younger Martin Ruane (Giant Haystacks), a down-on-his-luck father of three. Both were living in poverty, scratching out a living in the murky underworld of northern England as nightclub doormen. A decade later, they were two of the most famous faces in Britain, with record-breaking millions tuning in to watch them clash at Wembley. But the glory wouldn’t last forever. Big Daddy vs Giant Haystacks tells a rags-to-riches tale of unlikely fame, family loyalty, tragic death, and a uniquely British pop culture phenomenon. This gripping roller-coaster story features exclusive contributions from the likes of Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart, former British heavyweight champion Tony St. Clair and ‘Superstar’ Mal Sanders.

Barbados

With a year-round tropical climate and relaxed atmosphere, Barbados is the ideal Caribbean destination for some fun in the sun. This new, thoroughly updated fifth edition of Bradt's Barbados - still the only standalone travel guidebook to this Lesser Antilles island - offers extensive coverage of famous and lesser-known sights, from the glamorous celebrity-studded Platinum Coast to the wild, untamed remoteness of its Atlantic shoreline. The easternmost island in the Lesser Antilles is English-speaking and has a distinctly British vibe - both colonial legacies. Today the sun-drenched isle is especially popular with Europeans and North Americans. In-depth advice on accommodation features strongly, from luxury villas and multi-starred retreats to local guesthouses and family-friendly resorts, as do informed perspectives on where and what to eat, from gourmet beachside restaurants to Barbados street food and rum shops, where gossip is shared over a speciality tipple. Also covered are events that capture the culture, music (notably Caribbean jazz and calypso), food and drink of Bajan life, such as a Friday night 'lime' or 'fish-fry', plus sports and the much-loved Barbados carnival. Alongside excelling at toes-in-the-sand relaxation, Barbados richly rewards those who explore by bus, on day tours or by rental car - and doing so is straightforward, inexpensive and safe. The wilder east and north coasts are pounded by Atlantic waves: here you will find surfing, intriguing caves, coastal rambles, and charming and colourful villages comprising wooden chattel houses. Dotted amidst the sugar-cane fields of the interior are stately plantation houses, pretty botanical gardens and traditional rum distilleries. In the sleepy capital of Bridgetown, there's fine sightseeing around the Garrison Historic Area, in particular. You can even venture both underwater and underground - respectively gawping at nocturnal marine life on the Atlantis Submarine Night Tour or taking a tram through limestone caverns at Harrison's Cave - or trek through the tropical rainforest of Welchman Hall Gully. So whether you crave white-sand beaches fringed by an emerald-blue sea or duty-free shopping along Broad Street, fancy indulging in vibrant nightlife or clifftop hikes, or visiting traditional villages or local rum distilleries, this fifth edition of Bradt's Barbados has got you covered.

From Occupation to Integration

After the collapse of the National Socialist regime in May 1945, France became one of four principal occupying powers in a defeated Germany. Within their zone of occupation along the Upper and Middle Rhine, French occupiers participated in the Allied project to remake German society. In the process, they confronted the long history of Franco-German rivalry in the region and their country's diminished power in the wake of World War II. From Occupation to Integration explores how French ideas about civilization and the civilizing process shaped the practice of occupation in the French Zone and the early stages of European integration. The French Zone was set apart from the other Allied zones by the occupiers' belief that Nazi "barbarism" was deeply rooted in German culture and history. In seeking to transform the Germans along their border into acceptable partners for France within a united western Europe, the French occupiers applied aspects of France's universal "civilizing" mission, adapting strategies and practices developed in the country's overseas colonies to fit a European population. Whether implementing counterinsurgency methods developed in French North Africa in the pacification and control of their zone or attempting to address what they perceived as the deep-rooted flaws of German culture through reeducation and propaganda, the French applied their civilizational thinking, using that vision to justify and guide the first postwar attempts at cross-border economic integration. Through both conflicts and cooperation with the German population, the French in occupied Germany negotiated a shared vision of western European civilization that they hoped would ensure French leadership in Europe. In this engaging study, Drew Flanagan deftly details and analyzes the entanglement between the Europeanization of the French Zone and decolonization in France's empire, prompting readers to consider the continued impact of colonial and imperial ideas and practices on contemporary Europe and the European Union.

The Man Who Refused to Plead Guilty

'A remarkable story' - Arun Kundnani, author of The Muslims are Coming! In 2003, 23-year-old Uzair Paracha was arrested by the US government and branded a terrorist. A Pakistani man living in New York, he was accused of providing 'material support' to al-Qaeda - a vague, catch-all charge invented in the chaotic aftermath of 9/11. He was offered a plea deal but refused, knowing he was innocent. What followed was a nightmare: years in solitary confinement, a trial built on fear instead of facts, and a justice system determined to make an example of someone who they thought looked the part. Uzair’s case wasn’t an anomaly: it was the blueprint. The Man Who Refused to Plead Guilty is more than one man’s story: it’s a stark reflection of the path the US chose after 9/11. A path that reached for demonisation before understanding, punishment before truth. Uzair Paracha’s experience lays bare the human cost of a vengeful nation, how a heart filled with principle can find some small semblance of justice.

Divest

A manifesto for liberating desire from the grip of capital and colonial violence in PalestineCould a psychoanalytic theory of masochism help us to understand the politics of protest? A socially engaged psychoanalysis of 2024's widespread student uprisings in support of Palestine, Divest posits that masochism, as theorized by Freud in his later years, is a fundamental structure at the heart of anticapitalist and anticolonial resistance. Conceptualizing masochism as a radical form of divestment, Steven Swarbrick theorizes the affective economies of solidarity, self-sacrifice, and collective struggle. Through vivid film readings and sharp critique of state and university violence, Swarbrick explores the emancipatory potential of masochism in the protest movement and the sadistic machinery of capitalist governance it has laid bare. Divest is both a politically urgent manifesto and a theoretical companion to the global movement for Palestinian liberation. Asserting that the politics of left-wing solidarity must reckon with the libidinal investments that sustain both power and resistance, this bold volume argues that divestment from global capitalism may begin with a revolution in our psychic attachments.
