Anna Karenina
The must-have Pevear and Volokhonskytranslation of one of the greatest Russian novels ever written Described by William Faulkner as the best novel ever written and by Fyodor Dostoevsky as flawless, "Anna Karenina" tells of the doomed love affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna and the dashing officer, Count Vronsky. Tragedy unfolds as Anna rejects her passionless marriage and thereby exposes herself to the hypocrisies of society. Set against a vast and richly textured canvas of nineteenth-century Russia, the novel's seven major characters create a dynamic imbalance, playing out the contrasts of city and country life and all the variations on love and family happiness. While previous versions have softened the robust and sometimes shocking qualities of Tolstoy's writing, Pevear and Volokhonskyhave produced a translation true to his powerful voice. This authoritative edition, which received the PEN Translation Prize and was an Oprah Book Club selection, also includes an illuminating introduction and explanatory notes. Beautiful, vigorous, and eminently readable, this "Anna Karenina" will be the definitive text for fans of the film and generations to come. This Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition also features French flaps and deckle-edged paper. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. The Red Thread of Fate
In the Orient there is a belief that the gods, using an invisible red thread, connect every person with their destined 'other'. In Japanese legend, the thread is thought to be tied around the little finger of everyone on earth. According to this myth, the thread can travel everywhere, regardless of time, place and circumstances, until finding its other end. It is also said that the magical thread may be twisted or tangled but never broken. This book follows the myth and consists of four parts representing the four seasons: SPRING - the birth; SUMMER - the flourishing; AUTUMN - the experience; WINTER - the knowledge. On each illustration the invisible thread is hidden, weaving through nature, culture and the myths of traditional and contemporary Japanese life. You, the reader, needs to find and transform the invisible thread into the magical red one, while colouring the rest of the world it passes through using your imagination, and follow the red thread to find its destiny. Includes 6 pages of characters, icons, traditions and curiosities of Japanese arts and crafts.

Nachádza sa v bezprostrednej blízkosti Banskej Štiavnice, prvého slovenského mesta zapísaného do Zoznamu svetového kultúrneho a prírodného dedičstva UNESCO. Kaštieľ na úpätí legendami opradeného vrchu Sitno, najvyššieho končiara Štiavnických vrchov, dala v rokoch 1744-1750 postaviť vplyvná uhorská šľachtická rodina Koháryovcov. Po sobáši poslednej koháryovskej dedičky Márie Antónie Gabriely s príslušníkom nemeckého kniežacieho rodu Ferdinandom Jurajom Coburgom roku 1816, v ďalšom zveľaďovaní kaštieľa pokračoval významný nemecký rod Coburgovcov.

Abstract Expressionism
Mood marks: The painterly gestures of personal feelings Hailed as the first American-born art movement to have a worldwide influence, Abstract Expressionismdenotes the non-representational use of paint as a means of personal expression. It emerged in America in the 1940s, with lead protagonists includingJackson Pollock, Philip Guston, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, andWillem de Kooning.Abstract Expressionism spawned many different stylistic tendencies but two particularly prominent sub-categories: action painting, exemplified by de Kooning and Pollock, and color field painting, made most famous by Rothko. Throughout, Abstract Expressionists strove to conveyemotions and ideas through the making of marks, through forms, textures, shades, and the particular quality of brushstrokes. The movement favored large-scale canvases, and embraced the role of accident or chance. With featured works from 20 key Abstract Expressionist artists, this book introduces the movement whichshifted the center of art gravity from Paris to New Yorkand remains for many the golden moment of American art. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre series features: a detailed illustrated introduction plus a timeline of the most important political, cultural and social events that took place during that period a selection of the most important works of the epoch, each of which is presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and with an interpretation of the respective work, plus a portrait and brief biography of the artist approximately 100 colour illustrations with explanatory captions "
Haring
Art is for Everybody: The artist as activistOne of the key figures in the New York art world of the 1980s, Keith Haring (1958 1990) created a signature style that blended street art, graffiti, Pop, and cartoon elements to unique, memorable effect. With thick black outlines, bright colors, and kinetic figures, his public (and occasionally illegal) interventions, sculptures, and works on canvas and paper have become instantly recognizable icons of 20th century visual culture. From his first chalk drawings in the New York City subway stations, to his renowned Radiant Baby symbol, and his commissions for Swatch Watch and Absolut Vodka, Haring s work was both emblematic of the manic work ethic of 1980s New York, yet distinctive for its social-awareness. Belying their bright, playful aesthetics, his pieces often tackled intensely controversial socio-political issues, including racism, capitalism, religious fundamentalism, and the increasing impact of AIDS on New York s gay community, the latter foreshadowing his own death from the disease in 1990.In this vivid introduction to Haring s work, we explore the dynamic life and innovative spirit of this singular artist, who spent little more than a decade in the spotlight, but through the accessibility of his visual vocabulary and the strength of his political commitment became one of the most significant artists to emerge from New York s vibrant, downtown community.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions"
Kandinsky
The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), who later lived in Germany and France, is one of the pioneers of 20th-century art. Nowadays he is regarded as the founder of abstract art and is, moreover, the chief theoretician of this type of painting. Together with Franz Marc and others he founded the group of artists known as the "Blane Reiter" in Munich. His art then freed itself more and more from the object, eventually culminating in the First Abstract Watercolor of 1910. In his theoretical writings Kandinsky repeatedly sought the proximity of music; and just as in music, where the individual notes constitute the medium whose effect stems from harmony and euphony, Kandinsky was aiming for a pure concord of color the rough the interplay of various shades. Gauguin had demanded that everything "must be sacrificed to pure colors." Kandinsky was the first to realize this and thus to influence a whole range of artists.
Manet
A fresh look: Pivotal paintings of modernityLampooned during his lifetime for his style as much as his subject matter, French painterEdouard Manet (1832 1883) is now considered a crucial figure in the history of art, bridging the transition from Realism to Impressionism.Manet s work combined a painterly technique with strikingly modern images of contemporary life, centered on the urban Paris experience. He recorded the city s parks, bars, and cabarets, often delighting in the frisson of underground or provocative content. The Paris salon rejected his Dejeuner sur l herbe with its juxtaposition of fully dressed men and a nude woman, while the steady gaze and unabashed pose of the prostitute Olympia, a very modern reworking of Titian s Venus of Urbino, caused a society scandal. With rich illustration, this book introduces Manet s work and his uniquely influential combination of Realism, Impressionism, and reworked Old Masters that would become paradigms of a brave new world for generations of modernists to come.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions"
Munch
Psychodrama: The reverberating power of an Expressionist iconA hairless, ghostly figure on a bridge. The sky orange-red above him. His hands raised to his ears, his mouth wide in a haunting wail. In painting The Scream, Edvard Munch (1863 1944) created Mona Lisa for our times. The shriek of his iconic figure reverberates around the world, its echo resounding in the work of Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Martin Kippenberger, Marlene Dumas, and Tracey Emin. This introductory book surveys Munch s staggering capacity for psychodrama in The Scream and beyond. With rich illustration, it looks at the lurid, dark, and deeply modern visions that made up the artist s response to relationships and emotions. These compelling images, regarded by the artist himself as a means of free confession, remain as magnetic today as they were on the brink of modernism.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions"
