Abstract America
The twentieth anniversary of the Saatchi Gallery was celebrated in 2005 with "The Triumph of Painting", a landmark exhibition. The show presented painting as a fundamental root of artistic expression. It demonstrated how in an age of endless artistic possibilities painting remained a primary medium. The influences of photography, cinema and fashion were all reflected in the work of the new European painters. Especially influential was the work of a generation of German artists who had grown up in a post-war and divided nation. The book accompanying the exhibition, the first publication to make the disparate currents of the new painting coherent, was soon out of print. "The Triumph of Painting" has been expanded into an ongoing project and to mark the opening of the gallery's new and largest exhibition space in London two new definitive volumes are being published. The first, Germania, will present the German tradition beginning with the work of the dominant figures Martin Kippenberger and Jorg Immendorff and extended to the new generation, including radical work from the Leipzig school. The second volume will be devoted entirely to the new American abstract painters, few of whom appeared in the original "Triumph of Painting" book. "The Triumph of Painting" will continue with further volumes coinciding with future exhibitions to establish the most authoritative and comprehensive survey of new painting.

Germania
The very title Germania suggests an empire of ruin, a dream of Albert Speer, or the land of some barbaric tribe, suitable for taming. It carries an historical echo. The postwar generation of German artists who had lived through the nation's recovery from defeat - Anselm Kiefer, George Baselitz and Martin Kippenberger - have now given way to a generation who have experienced the consequences of the reunification of 1989. The capital of Germania is Berlin, but its frontiers extend to Leipzig and Dresden, former cities of the East. Germany exists within the European Union, but Germania stretches past political frontiers. The reinvention of history is one of the characteristics of the new art and the new generation. The happenings of the past can be re-enacted. The ghosts of Brecht or Dada can be reinvigorated. But the medium of the Internet provides a different platform to that afforded by artistic predecessors. 'The new generation of Germania', writes Max Henry in his introduction, 'can discard the chronology of their influences. They can incorporate sound and music, self-publish their theoretical literature, display archival ephemera, curate and collaborate, and ultimately seize all available means to propagate their view.' Such opportunities have stimulated the emergence of the most vibrant artistic language. Film, theatre, television, collage and kitsch provide the raw influences, but at the centre of Germania lies a core of expressionist painting, embodied in the dense surfaces of Andre Butzer. Out of this seeming chaos Germania leaves anarchic traces. These are the signs of life embedded at the heart of this stark empire. Germania is a further title in the series Jonathan Cape is publishing in conjunction with the exhibition programme of the new Saatchi Gallery in London.

Vitamin 3-D
While much of the artistic innovation of the last two decades centred on the image, today the greatest strides are being taken in three dimensions. Contemporary art maintains an ongoing fascination with the key issues of modern sculpture, from the readymade to the specific object, and artists today are returning to them again and again, with fresh and often surprising results. At the same time, artists are striking out into new territory, harnessing the medium to confront today's commodity world in its own materials, from the Latin American junk assemblage of Marepe, Gabriel Kuri and Abraham Cruzvillegas to the wittily reworked objects of Peter Coffin, Tom Friedman and Allora & Calzadilla. Even before Rosalind's Krauss's landmark 1979 essay "Sculpture in the Expanded Field" the distinction between sculpture and its environment had already begun to dissolve. Today artists demolish the classical definition of sculpture - 'not architecture and not landscape' - in such works as Jorge Pardo's houses, Mike Nelson's labyrinthian interiors and Fischli and Weiss's garden plots. And if in the years leading up to Minimalism sculpture absorbed its pedestal, it has now spread across the floor, hung from the rafters and even swallowed the whole building. Although "Vitamin 3-D" will exclude film and video installations, it will be open to all other forms of sculpture and installation, including kinetic sculpture (Urs Fischer's untitled spinning branch chandeliers, Olafur Eliasson's "Reversed Waterfall"), paintings that have left the wall (Chris Johanson's multicoloured wood constructions, Aaron Curry's spray-painted cardboard panels), and even a few completely dematerialized works (Jeppe Hein's "Invisible Labyrinth", Martin Creed's "The Lights Going On and Off").

Informers film tie-in
Capturing the lives of a group of people in Los Angeles, The Informers is an intense narrative that blurs genders, generations and even identities. The characters go to the same schools and eat at the same restaurants. Their voices enfold us as seamlessly as those of DJs heard over a car radio. They have sex with the same boys and girls and buy from the same dealers. In short, they are connected in the only way people can be in L.A. – suffering from nothing less than the death of the soul.

Astronomical
'In the same light-heartedly informative spirit as his previous Elemental, Tim James gives us an entertaining gallop through light years of space science, from the big bang to UFOs'
Andrew Crumey, author of The Great Chain of Unbeing
PRAISE FOR THE AUTHOR
'Humorous, yet deep . . . Fundamental will speak to all readers'
Professor Charles Antoine, Sorbonne University
'Who said science was dry? Certainly not Tim James'
New York Post
Does the Big Bang prove the existence of God? What's the Universe expanding into? Is Earth the only planet which supports life? Why did the greatest astronomer in history murder his pet moose?
Space is the biggest, oldest, hottest, coldest, strangest thing a human can study. It's no surprise then, that the weirdest facts in science (not to mention the weirdest scientists themselves) are found in astrophysics and cosmology.
If you're looking for instructions on how to set up your grandad's telescope this book probably isn't for you. In Astronomical, Tim James takes us on a tour of the known (and unknown) Universe, focusing on the most-mind boggling stuff we've come across, as well as unpacking the latest theories about what's really going on out there.
Guiding us through Einstein's relativity, quantum mechanics and string theory, Astronomical delves into the baffling corners of the cosmos and tackles the biggest mysteries we face: from alien life to the zodiac; from white holes to wormholes; from quasars to quark stars. This is the science of space at its absolute strangest!
From the creation of the Universe out of nothing to the Large Hadron Collider and the Universe's ongoing expansion, Tim explores our planetary neighbours, where it snows metal on Venus, there are underground lakes on Mars and rivers of petrol on Titan.
He then looks beyond our solar system: to exoplanets which could support life, rogue planets, quark stars, quasars, neutron stars and more. Tim looks at black holes (and how to survive in one), wormholes, white holes as well as dark energy, dark matter and even a bit of string theory thrown in for good measure. He explains the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence, including the discovery of Martian fossils in the Alan Hills meteorite and the tantalising 'Wow signal' transmission earth received in 1973 - still unexplained.
He also rebuts resurgent anti-science movements, including the Flat Earth Society and discusses what's really going on inside Area 51.
To close, Tim finishes by looking at human achievements in space including how rockets work, how faster-than-light warp-drives (currently being investigated by NASA) work and how we plan to colonise both the moon and Mars.

Beard Peter Fo
Finally available in the trade edition: TASCHEN's massive, two-volume collection of Peter Beard's photos, diaries, and collages.Photographer, collector, diarist, and writer of books Peter Beard has fashioned his life into a work of art; the illustrated diaries he kept from a young age evolved into a serious career as an artist and earned him a central position in the international art world. He was painted by Francis Bacon, painted on by Salvador Dali, and made diaries with Andy Warhol; he toured with Truman Capote and the Rolling Stones, created books with Jacqueline Onassis and Mick Jagger - all of whom are brought to life, literally and figuratively, in his work. As a fashion photographer, he took "Vogue" stars like Veruschka to Africa and brought new ones - most notably Iman - back to the U.S. with him.His love affair with natural history and wildlife, which informs most of his work, began when he was a teenager. He had read the books of Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) and after spending time in Kenya and befriending the author, bought a piece of land near hers. It was the early 1960s and the big game hunters led safaris, with all the colonial elements Beard had read about in "Out of Africa" characterizing the open life and landscape, but the times were changing. Beard witnessed the dawn of Kenya's population explosion, which challenged finite resources and stressed animal populations - including the starving elephants of Tsavo, dying by the tens of thousands in a wasteland of eaten trees. So he documented what he saw - with diaries, photographs, and collages. He went against the wind in publishing unique and sometimes shocking books of these works. The corpses were laid bare; the facts were carefully written down sometimes in type, often by hand, occasionally with blood.Peter Beard's most important collages are included, along with hundreds of smaller-scale works and diaries, magnified to show every detail - from Beard's meticulous handwriting and old-master-inspired drawings to stones and bones and bits of animals pasted to the page. The special features include: two volumes in a cloth slipcase; a main book with 200 pages of diaries and 294 pages of collages + 5 fold-outs; an original essay by photo critic Owen Edwards; and a companion volume: PB2 image index with captions for all images from main book, personal photos and early work of the artist, interview with the artist by Steven M. L. Aronson, a facsimile reprint of Beard's 1993 handwritten essay from the sold-out first issue of "Blind Spot' magazine, extensive bibliography, and a list of exhibition. Finally available in the trade edition: this large-format special edition is based on the original limited Collector's Edition, which sold out instantly upon publication.
