The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes - The Novels
The publication of Leslie S. Klinger's brilliant new annotations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's four classic Holmes novels in 2005 created a Holmes sensation. Klinger reassembles Doyle's four seminal novels in their original order, with over 1,000 notes, 350 illustrations and period photographs, and tantalizing new Sherlockian theories. Inside, readers will find:
A Study in Scarlet (1887)-a tale of murder and revenge that tells of Holmes and Dr. Watson's first meeting;
The Sign of Four (1889)-a chilling tale of lost treasure...and of how Watson met his wife;
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1901)-hailed as the greatest mystery novel of all time; and
The Valley of Fear (1914)-a fresh murder scene that leads Holmes to solve a long-forgotten mystery.
Whether as a stand-alone volume or as a companion to the short stories, this classic work illuminates the timeless genius of Conan Doyle for an entirely new generation.

The Art of the Good Life
Since antiquity, i.e. for at least 2,500 years and probably much longer, people have been asking themselves what it means to live a good life. How should I live? What constitutes a good life? What's the role of fate? What's the role of money? Is leading a good life a question of mindset, or is it more about reaching your goals? Is it better to actively seek happiness or to avoid unhappiness? Each generation poses these questions anew, and somehow the answers are always fundamentally disappointing. Why? Because we're constantly searching for a single principle, a single tenet, a single rule. Yet this holy grail - a single, simple path - doesn't exist.
Over the past few decades, a silent revolution has taken place within various fields of thought. Within science, politics, medicine and many other areas, scholars have come to realise that the world is far too complicated to summarise in one big idea or handful of principles. We need a toolkit of mental models in order to understand the world. It's high time somebody compiled a similar toolkit designed for practical living. Voila. Here you'll find fifty-two such intellectual tools - they may not guarantee you a good life, but they'll give you a better chance.

Yellow Wallpaper
Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrenched this small literary masterpiece from her own experience. Narrated with superb psychological skill and dramatic precision, it tells the story of a nameless woman driven mad by enforced confinement after the birth of her child. Isolated in a colonial mansion in the middle of nowhere, forced to sleep in an attic nursery with barred windows and sickly yellow wallpaper, secretly she does what she has to do - she writes. She craves intellectual stimulation, activity, loving understanding, instead she is ordered to her bedroom to rest and 'pull herself together'. Here, slowly but surely, the tortuous pattern of the wallpaper winds its way into the recesses of her mind...
Fractured Continent
An urgent examination of how the political, economic and social volatility in Europe will affect the US and the rest of the world.
President Obama began his first term with a concerted effort to reshape America's image abroad. He made overtures to the Islamic world in Cairo, pivoted towards China and vowed to "reset" relations with Russia. What Obama has forgotten, argues William Drozdiak, was the imminent crisis in Europe which threatens not only America's long-time relationship with her allies, but global security. The UK stunned the world by leaving the EU; in Germany, there is growing alarm that one million refugees, mostly from Syria, are putting the country's stability at risk; in Spain, a protracted economic crisis has spread disillusionment among young people and damaged support for centrist political leaders; while Greece has become a waystation for refugees fleeing Syria.
By speaking with world leaders from Brussels to Berlin, from Rome to Riga, Drozdiak described the crises, the attempted solutions and asks where Europe goes from here and how the west can revitalise its key institutions like NATO and the EU. The result is a timely, character- and narrative-driven book about this tumultuous phase of contemporary European history.
Stephen Shore - Survey
Stephen Shore has had a significant influence on multiple generations of artists and photographers. Even for the youngest photographers working today, his work remains an ongoing and indisputable reference point. This book copublished with Fundación MAPFRE in conjunction with the first-ever retrospective exhibition, includes over 250 images that span Shores impressive and productive career. The images range from 1969 to 2013, with series such as Early Works, Amarillo, New York City, American Surfaces, and Uncommon Places, among others. Stephen Shore: Survey elucidates Shores contributions, as well as the historiographical interpretations of his work that have influenced photographic culture over the past four decades. Both the exhibition and the narrative of the catalogue are conceptualized around three particularly revealing aspects of Shores work, including his analysis of photographic and visual language, his topographical approach to the contemporary landscape, and his significant use of color within a photographic context.
The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve
Bolder, even, than the ambitious books for which Stephen Greenblatt is already renowned, The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve explores the enduring story of humanity's first parents. Comprising only a few ancient verses, the story of Adam and Eve has served as a mirror in which we seem to glimpse the whole, long history of our fears and desires, as both a hymn to human responsibility and a dark fable about human wretchedness. Tracking the tale into the deep past, Greenblatt uncovers the tremendous theological, artistic, and cultural investment over centuries that made these fictional figures so profoundly resonant in the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim worlds and, finally, so very "real" to millions of people even in the present. With the uncanny brilliance he previously brought to his depictions of William Shakespeare and Poggio Bracciolini (the humanist monk who is the protagonist of The Swerve), Greenblatt explores the intensely personal engagement of Augustine, Durer, and Milton in this mammoth project of collective creation, while he also limns the diversity of the story's offspring: rich allegory, vicious misogyny, deep moral insight, and some of the greatest triumphs of art and literature. The biblical origin story, Greenblatt argues, is a model for what the humanities still have to offer: not the scientific nature of things, but rather a deep encounter with problems that have gripped our species for as long as we can recall and that continue to fascinate and trouble us today.

Srdce temnoty
I autor příběhu Joseph Conrad (3. 12. 1857 – 3. 8. 1924), anglický spisovatel polského původu a bývalý námořník, strávil pár let před vznikem novely nějakou dobu na parníku v africkém Kongu. V našem vydání máte možnost si přečíst a poslechnout originální verzi díla opatřenou jazykovými komentáři a literárními poznámkami. Ti z Vás, kteří se necítí v angličtině příliš pevní v kramflecích, si mohou nejdříve přečíst zjednodušenou verzi se zrcadlovým českým překladem.

Hollywood Royale
One of a handful of artists to emerge from Andy Warhol's celebrity-focused Interview magazine, Matthew Rolston is a well-established icon of Hollywood photography. Alongside such luminaries as Herb Ritts and Greg Gorman, Rolston was a member of an influential group of photographers (among them, Bruce Weber, Annie Leibovitz, and Steven Meisel) who came from the 1980's magazine scene. Rolston helped define the era's take on celebrity image-making, gender bending, and much more. Edited by Los Angeles-based gallerist and curator David Fahey, this book, Rolston's fourth monograph, presents a stunning array of portraits that beautifully capture the decade and its myriad talents. From Michael Jackson and Madonna, to Prince, George Michael, and Cyndi Lauper, the images reflect a seamless blend of style, skill, and scintillation. This volume features over 100 mesmerizing photographs selected from Rolston's extensive body of work, centering on his unforgettable portraits of the era's most famous personalities. With essays by authors Pat Hackett, Andy Warhol's longtime collaborator and diarist; Colin Westerbeck, noted photographic curator and expert on American photographer Irving Penn; and Charles Churchward, longtime creative director of Vogue and Vanity Fair and author of The Golden Hour, a definitive biography of Herb Ritts, Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles, paints a fascinating picture of an indelible image-maker and the film stars, models, and artists he immortalized during this period. Rolston's photographs recall the glamour of "Old Hollywood" with postmodern irony
