Coffeeland: A History
Coffee is one of the most valuable commodities in the history of the global economy and the world's most popular drug. The very word 'coffee' is one of the most widespread on the planet. Augustine Sedgewick's brilliant new history tells the hidden and surprising story of how this came to be, tracing coffee's 400-year transformation into an everyday necessity.
The story is one that few coffee drinkers know. Coffeeland centres on the volcanic highlands of El Salvador, where James Hill, born in the slums of nineteenth-century Manchester, founded one of the world's great coffee dynasties. Adapting the innovations of the industrial revolution to plantation agriculture, Hill helped to turn El Salvador into perhaps the most intensive monoculture in modern history, a place of extraordinary productivity, inequality and violence.
The book follows coffee from the Hill family plantations into the United States, through the San Francisco roasting plants into supermarkets, kitchens and work places, and finally into today's omnipresent cafes. Sedgewick reveals the unexpected consequences of the rise of coffee, which reshaped large areas of the tropics, transformed understandings of energy, and ultimately made us dependent on a drug served in a cup.

The Second Mountain
Are you on your first or second mountain? Is life about yourself or others? Are you self-improving or committed? Mainstream culture teaches us that human beings pursue our self-interest - money, power, fame. But at some point in our life we might discover that we're not interested in what other people tell us to want. We want to want the things that are truly worthy of wanting.
At this point, you have moved to your second mountain. What does it mean to elevate your desires, to look beyond consumption and find a moral cause? To forget about independence and discover dependence - to be utterly enmeshed in a web of warm relationships? What does it mean to want intimacy, devotion, responsibility and commitment above individual freedom? In The Second Mountain David Brooks explores the meaning and possibilities that scaling a second mountain offer us, and the four commitments that most commonly move us there: family, vocation, philosophy and community. Inspiring, personal and full of joy, this is the start of a deeper journey into the world.

Prix Pictet 2009 Earth
Now in its second year, the Prix Pictet, awarded by the Swiss Private Bank Pictet & Cie, aims to use photography to educate audiences worldwide about issues related to climate change. This is the first photographic award on the topic of sustainability, harnessing art’s unique compelling power for the benefit of our precious planet. The theme for this year is Earth, encompassing the planet, the ground beneath our feet, and the ways in which mankind negatively affects the landscape, whether through broken abandoned cities, strip mining, waste dumps or other forms of exploitation. It also refers to the aftermath of natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides and volcanoes. The shortlist of the nominees (Darren Almond, Christopher Anderson, Sammy Baloji, Edward Burtynsky, Andreas Gursky, Naoya Hatakeyama, Nadav Kander, Ed Kashi, Abbas Kowsari, Yao Lu, Edgar Martins, Chris Steele-Perkins) was announced in July at the Rencontres d’Arles photo festival in France, and the winner in Paris in October. One of the short-listed photographers will be commissioned to record a sustainability project funded by Pictet & Cie. In this regard Pictet & Cie is proud to support the work that Azafady, a UK charity and Malagasy-registered NGO, is carrying out in Madagascar. Making an Elephant
As a novelist, Graham Swift delights in the possibilities of the human voice, imagining his way into the minds and hearts of an extraordinary range of characters. In Making an Elephant, his first ever work of non-fiction, the voice is his own.
Swift brings together a richly varied selection of essays, portraits, poetry, and reflections on his life in writing, full of insights into his passions and motivations, and wise about the friends, family, and other writers who have mattered to him over the years. Kazuo Ishiguro advises on how to choose a guitar, Salman Rushdie arrives for Christmas under guard, and Ted Hughes shares the secrets of a Devon river. There are private moments, too, with long-dead writers, as well as musings on history and memory that readers of Swift’s novels will recognize and love.
Stern FOTOGRAFIE Portfolio No. 59
Heinz Koester’s celebrity photography brought much-needed hope and distraction to the austerity of post-war Germany. His skilful lighting and unique camera angles are still striking to the modern eye. Although very advanced in photographic techniques, Koester treated his subjects with old-world courtesy. “Warts and all” documentary style was not for him. A master of the careful touch-up and flattering composition, these works showcase public figures in a way that’s both intimate and inspiring. Working by day and by night, Koester’s output was monumental. Mighty statesmen, theatrical impresarios, screen legends; his lens captured them all! This collection presents the artistic highlights of a most prolific career.
