The Primacy of Drawing
A definitive and comprehensive study of drawing, now entirely revised.
Drawing has always been an inseparable part of art-making, both as a distinct art form and a crucial step in many other creative visual practice. Yet, its role has faced increasing scrutiny in recent decades. The popularity of readymades, the endless possibilities of new technologies, and the idea of the artist as a performer have shifted attention away from traditional studies or sketches. Deanna Petherbridge's second edition of The Primacy of Drawing invites new perspectives on the practice, which she argues is central to "all aspects of cultural making and thinking."
Petherbridge begins by exploring ancient myths about the origins of drawing, then examines the contrasts between open-ended sketches and highly formalized studies, which together form a drawing continuum?graphic parameters within which artists continue to experiment. She also delves into the economy of drawing?its qualities of line and mark, and analyzes the strategies behind making, composing, and inventing drawn images. The teaching of drawing in academies has led to complex theories on copying, genre hierarchies, and expressive figure drawing. The manner in which satire, sexuality, and play develop compositional strategies reflects Petherbridge’s perspective as a teacher, deeply engaged with the hows and whys of visual thinking.
The Primacy of Drawing serves as both a much-needed history of the practice and a valuable resource for anyone interested in drawing.

Matisse
This lavishly produced volume explores Matisse’s lifelong reinvention of art through some fifty works, six extraordinary fold-out spreads, and illuminating essays.
Providing a unique opportunity to see Matisse’s work at a remarkable scale, this volume echoes the clarity, richness, and innovation of his art. Showcasing dozens of carefully reproduced paintings and cut-outs, the book offers a panoramic view of one of modern art’s most influential figures. Tracing Matisse’s development from early naturalist studies to the luminous intensity of Fauvism and the radical simplicity of his late paper cut-outs, it follows his evolving approach to form, color, and composition.
Brief essays accompany approximately fifty emblematic works, offering new insight into the artist’s changing techniques and the contexts in which he worked. With colored edges, a printed cloth binding, and a design that reflects Matisse’s visual sensibility, the book is as visually compelling in its production as the works it presents.
Six major compositions — including Joy of Life, The Red Studio, The Dance, and The Sorrows of the King — appear as expansive map-style fold-outs, allowing readers to savor their ambition and detail in unprecedented depth. A vivid and layered portrait, this volume invites close attention to the artistic choices that shaped a career of continual reinvention.

Abraham Lincoln and the Heroic Legend
Kenneth W. Noe's Abraham Lincoln and the Heroic Legend boldly questions the long-accepted notion that the sixteenth president was an almost-perfect commander in chief, more intelligent than his generals. The legend originated with Lincoln himself, who early in the war concluded that he possessed a keen strategic and tactical mind. Noe explores the genesis of this powerful idea and asks why so many have tenaciously defended it. George McClellan, Lincoln's top general, emerged in Lincoln's mind and the American psyche as his chief adversary, and to this day, the Lincoln-McClellan relationship remains central to the enduring legend. Lincoln came to view himself as a wiser warrior than McClellan, and as the war proceeded, a few members of Lincoln's inner circle began to echo the president's thoughts on his military prowess. Convinced of his own tactical brilliance, Lincoln demanded that Ulysses Grant, McClellan's replacement, turn to the "hard, tough fighting" of the Overland and Petersburg campaigns, when Grant's first instinct was to copy McClellan and swing into the Confederate rear. Noe suggests that the growth and solidification of the heroic legend began with Lincoln's assassination; it debuted in print only months afterward and was so cloaked in religious piety that for decades it could not withstand the counternarratives offered by secular contemporaries. Although the legend was debated and neglected at times, it reemerged in interwar Great Britain and gained canonical status in the 1950s Cold War era and during the Civil War Centennial of the 1960s. Historians became torchbearers of the heroic legend and much else that we know about Lincoln, reorienting his biography forever. Based on lessons and language from the world wars, their arguments were so timely and powerful that they seized the field. Since then, biographers and historians have reevaluated many aspects of Lincoln's life, but have rarely revisited his performance as commander in chief. Noe's reappraisal is long overdue.

Lyric Personhood
A new theory of personhood makes the case that a “person” has always been an aesthetic category, not just a legal, political, or moral one. What does it mean to be a person? One might think of the possession of certain rights, having the capacity for love, or being self-determined. But if words like “person” or “love” seem to carry an internal meaning, where does this meaningfulness come from? Lyric Personhood contends that to be encultured in the modern West is to learn, on top of everything else, an unspoken and mostly felt sense of what it means to be someone, a sense transmitted not only in language but also through encounters with aesthetic form. Through close readings that span nineteenth-century European opera, commercial cinema, and amateur YouTube proposal videos, Dan Wang shows that a “person” has become an aesthetic concept—and not just a legal, moral, political, or philosophical one—in the last two hundred years of Western culture. It’s hard to let go of the organizing promise of romantic love, the dream of therapeutic “health,” and the aspiration to belong to national culture, Wang argues, because these longings have been shaped by an archive of sentimental and melodramatic works that trains people's expectations for life, genre, and even the knowing promised in theory itself. Tracing a surprisingly continuous imagination of personhood through opera and film aesthetics, Lyric Personhood introduces modes of reading audiovisual works that allow a longer story to be told about the forms that make personhood sensible in the West.
