How to Live
A vivid new translation in which the Stoic philosopher argues that virtue is the only path to contentmentWhy are so many people unhappy when happiness can be attained by anyone who simply lives virtuously? That question prompted Seneca, the great Stoic philosopher of the early Roman empire, to write On the Happy Life, and he continued to seek answers in his Moral Epistles. In How to Live, Seneca biographer and translator James Romm presents vivid new versions of passages from both works, distilling Seneca’s passionate and inspiring argument for a path to perfect contentment, no matter what befalls us. As a Stoic, Seneca believed that only ethical virtue leads to happiness; all other goals, including wealth and success, are neutral in their effects—or, if they torment us with what we haven’t achieved, sources of unhappiness. For role models, Seneca looks to Socrates, who embodied virtue and reason, and to a hypothetical sage who is always in tune with the divine mind that governs the cosmos. Extolling these paragons with nearly messianic fervor, Seneca urges us to imitate their example. Featuring an inviting introduction and the original Latin on facing pages, How to Live captures the persuasive power of Seneca’s argument that the universe wants us to be virtuous—and happy.
Árnyak tava
Az apja a város népszerű nyomozója volt… Az anyja pedig a leghírhedtebb bűnözője… Most viszont Mirror Lake titkai lassan a felszínre bukkannak, és mindent megváltoztatnak.
Jack Harper főfelügyelő Londont hátrahagyva próbált új életet kezdeni Blackdownban, de most a saját nyomozása középpontjában találja magát.

Rules for the Summer
They set rules for the summer - and broke every single one . . .
Renley Gossage has nothing but a struggling candy shop and a dream. She is determined to make it as Cape Meril's confectionary queen with no help, no shortcuts - and definitely no rich men wielding engagement rings and making things messy.
Theo Williams never thought he'd be flying across an ocean to propose to a stranger, but here he is, knocking on Renley's door with a shiny diamond. She's the one person who might be able to stop his life from falling apart, so he's here with a marriage proposal - and more importantly for Renley, a business proposal . . .
The Deal: Theo needs a wife so his stiff-upper-lipped father won't cut him off. Renley needs a financial backer, even if she's too stubborn to admit it.
The Rules: One fake engagement. One summer. Zero romance.
But between collapsing drywall, gossiping neighbours, and the chaotic schemes of Renley's aunt, their forced proximity turns into something dangerously close to real.
Except Renley can't let go of the idea that standing on her own two feet means not accepting help. And Theo's past is about to catch up with him. By the time the candy shop doors reopen, they'll have to decide if this is just a summer fling - or a happily ever after worth breaking the rules for . . .
Nem néma a többi
A kilencvenes években járunk, a rendszerváltás utáni Magyarországon. Ahogy a társadalom új alapokra helyezi a működését, úgy próbálja a kamasz Dalma is összerakni önmagát, a gyerek létből átjutni a felnőttéválás útvesztőin.
A társulat középpontja Dávid – a kiszámíthatatlan, nyers tehetségű, önmagát is felőrlő Mercutio, aki előtt senki sem tud rejtve maradni.

True Crime Detective Magazines
At the height of the Jazz Age, when Prohibition was turning ordinary citizens into criminals and ordinary criminals into celebrities, America’s true crime detective magazines were born. True Detective came first in 1924, and by 1934, when the Great Depression had produced colorful outlaws like Machine Gun Kelly, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby Face Nelson, and John Dillinger, the magazines were so popular cops and robbers alike vied to see themselves on the pages. Even FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover wrote regularly for what came to be called the “Dickbooks,” referring to a popular slang term for a detective. As the decades rolled on, the magazines went through a curious metamorphosis, however. When liquor was once more legal, the Depression over and all the flashy criminals dead or imprisoned, the “detectives” turned to sin to make sales. Sexy bad girls in tight sweaters, slit skirts, and stiletto heels adorned every cover. True Crime Detective Magazines follows the evolution and devolution of this distinctly American genre from 1924 to 1969. Hundreds of covers and interior images from dozens of magazine titles tell the story, not just of the “detectives,” but also of America’s attitudes towards sex, sin, crime, and punishment over five decades. With texts by magazine collector Eric Godtland, George Hagenauer, and True Detective editor Marc Gerald, True Crime Detective Magazines is an informative and entertaining look at one of the strangest publishing niches of all time.
The Atlantic Republic of Letters
Places Benjamin Franklin's Philadelphia in the context of a broader Atlantic intellectual world and investigates the entanglement among books, knowledge, and colonialismThe Atlantic Republic of Letters offers an alternative intellectual history of early America. Focusing on Benjamin Franklin's Philadelphia, the book frames Euro-American colonialism as an intellectual enterprise, which was established not only through military and economic means but also through books, ideas, and cultural institutions. Through research in dozens of archives and rare book libraries, Diego Pirillo brings together two interconnected histories. First, he recovers the place of British America in the cosmopolitan world of the Republic of Letters, studying the communication system that facilitated the transatlantic circulation of knowledge. Second, he shows that knowledge was weaponized in the effort to survey and control North America. While fashioning themselves as independent and cosmopolitan scholars, Franklin and his associates, including James and Martha Logan, Isaac Norris II, Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere, and Jane Colden, among others, were in fact deeply tied to political power and tailored their ideas to the needs of their patrons. They served as agents of empire and helped to devise and put into practice the colonial project. Not only were books, libraries, and cultural institutions funded by the wealth created by the slave trade and the expropriation of Indigenous land, but, as Pirillo argues, the very taxonomies and classification systems that Euro-American scholars devised directly shaped the colonial enterprise. In this respect, The Atlantic Republic of Letters illuminates the relationship among books, intellectuals, and colonial governance, and explores the ways in which knowledge circulated and shaped conquest.
