Catch the Devil

The gripping true story of a serial con man whose lies condemned a man to death row by award-winning New York Times Magazine writer Pamela Colloff. For more than three decades, Paul Skalnik roamed the southern states of America lying about who he was. He passed himself off as a fighter pilot, a high-rolling oilman, a criminal defense attorney, an undercover agent, and a terminal cancer patient. In these guises he married nine women-some at the same time - and scammed them out of their money. When Skalnik got caught, as he invariably did, he would run a different con. Locked up with other men awaiting trial, he claimed they confessed their crimes to him. Then he peddled those stories to prosecutors. In Florida, he became a frequent witness for the state, thinking nothing of exaggerating men''s wrongdoing or implicating the innocent to help prosecutors win convictions. In return, the state rewarded him with his freedom, fueling his growing sense of invincibility. Soon he was not just committing fraud; he was preying on girls in their teens or barely into adolescence. In 1985, Jim Dailey, a down-on-his-luck Vietnam veteran, was implicated in the murder of a 14-year-old girl and landed in jail with Skalnik. Despite a total lack of forensic evidence, Skalnik''s account of Dailey''s "confession" was enough to put Dailey on death row where he still waits, four decades later. In this mesmerizing debut, Pamela Colloff spins a dark tale of a remorseless and brilliant liar made lethal by a system more concerned with winning convictions than finding the truth.

FIRES IN NIGHT HB

‘Cinematic, suspenseful, totally immersive’ ZOË SCHLANGER‘Explosive … fascinating’ RENI EDDO-LODGE‘Riveting’ ERIC KLINENBERGThe explosive true story of a secret group of radicals who launched a clandestine battle to save the planet, and what their legacy illuminates about the future of our climate crisis. In the early hours of October 28, 1996, a driver in rural Oregon spotted flames rising from a federal ranger station. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but not before discovering a cryptic phrase spray-painted nearby: “EARTH LIBERATION FRONT.” Over the next decade, the Earth Liberation Front would carry out the most audacious politically motivated arsons in US history. Targeting car dealerships, lumber companies and a $20 million ski resort, they wanted to send a message: if the government wouldn’t halt the destruction of the natural world, they would. Despite causing no deaths, the ELF was branded the nation’s foremost domestic terrorism threat and became the target of one of the FBI’s largest ever investigations.Fires in the Night is the definitive story of the ELF’s rise and unravelling. For years, members of ELF, many of them close friends, led double lives, meticulously planning and staging their attacks while trying to manage personal frictions and stay one step ahead of the government. Drawing on years of original reporting and interviews, including with reclusive activists breaking their silence for the first time, journalist Matthew Wolfe offers a thrilling, intimate account of a moment when the actions of radical environmentalists challenged mainstream complacency. As the climate crisis continues to accelerate, Wolfe asks the most pressing question of our time: facing the end of the world as we know it, exactly what kind of resistance is justified?‘A larger story of the questions surrounding radical resistance, both during the late 1990s and today’NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW‘At once a cinematically propulsive narrative, a herculean feat of reporting and a sweeping work of modern environmental history’ ROBERT MOOR, author of On Trails‘A brilliant meditation on how a social movement draws its own moral lines’ ERIC KLINENBERG, author of Palaces for the People‘Masterful reporting. As riveting as any thriller’ SETH HARP, author of The Fort Bragg Cartel

Swan

In the Encounters in the Wild series, renowned nature writer Jim Crumley gets up close and personal with British wildlife. With his inimitable passion and vision, he relives memorable encounters with some of our best-loved native species, offering intimate insights into their extraordinary lives. “The birches, the larches, the mountain grasses and the reed bed are all afire, sparkling after sleety rain and in fitful sunlight. It is as if nature has contrived its finest theatrical stage set and then turned up the colour. There are stags roaring, for it is the season of the red deer rut. There are golden eagles in the mountains, peregrines and ravens on nearby crags, and otters on the river. Every spring, reliably at the nesting season, the place floods spectacularly. I have come here to watch a pair of mute swans.”

Turtle Island and the Tradition of Giants

The story of giants in the Indigenous prehistory of the Americas• Covers the secret history of an ancient race of giants that inhabited the Americas long before European contact• Presents accounts of these beings from Native American sources, legends, and oral traditions, correlated with archeological reports• Examines the Smithsonian’s role in covering up records of the skeletal remains of giants in the Americas, looking particularly at John Wesley Powell and Aleš HrdlickaWriter and researcher Ross Hamilton uses Indigenous voices, beliefs, and oral traditions to reconstruct the origin and secret history of an ancient race of giants that inhabited the continent long before European contact with the Americas. Hamilton reaches deep into North American antiquity to identify a people originally from the Arctic known as the Tall Ones. These beings lived alongside the tribes of the Americas and even bred with them. As he uncovers the story, Hamilton presents the ancient Turtle Island culture of the nation of Manitouba, a once-great civilization that stretched across much of the contemporary United States and Canada and maintained an advanced system of arts and sciences before being called back to the mysterious North. Along with examining the ways in which archaeological history was suppressed by premier American institutions such as Harvard and the Smithsonian, Hamilton revisits critical primary sources, including the Lenape accounts made by early American missionary John Heckewelder. With this research and the contributions of tribal elder Vine Deloria Jr., Hamilton unpacks long-misunderstood Indigenous myths and history to reveal a time when Earth met sky and men walked with gods.

Anish Kapoor

Key works from the past 15 years of Kapoor’s career, including new sculptures and paintings that elaborate upon the artist’s famed spatial and perceptual experimentations This landmark volume presents a selection of British sculptor Anish Kapoor’s (born 1954) output from the past 15 years, highlighting many of his most iconic works: steel mirror sculptures that warp, distort and disorient; objects coated in Vantablack that mystify with their extraordinary light-absorbing properties; and seemingly depthless voids opening within the gallery space, drawing viewers in with a thrilling sense of vertigo. The volume also introduces the artist’s development of new, strikingly visceral forms of sculpture and painting. In these recent works, Kapoor explores both novel thematic concerns as well as those that have been central to his entire career: spatial perception, presence and absence, surface and void, the known and the unknown. The volume also features a text from renowned psychoanalyst and philosopher Julia Kristeva as well as an interview with the artist conducted by Hayward Gallery Director Ralph Rugoff.

Churchill’s Queen

A ground-breaking and revelatory exploration of the remarkable friendship between Queen Elizabeth II and Winston Churchill. In February 1952, when the young Elizabeth returned to London after her sudden accession to the throne, Churchill was first to greet her as she stepped off the aircraft. The image was a striking one – an elderly statesman in the twilight of his career paying homage to a young sovereign just embarking on what would become the longest reign in the history of the British monarchy. He already had a lifetime of experience to share, while she had a lifetime of service still to come.Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth II rank alongside the most iconic historical figures of all time. They defined the ages in which they lived, and exerted enormous influence on the lives of millions around the globe. But even more extraordinary than their individual achievements is the unique friendship that developed between them, with Churchill helping the fledgling queen to shape the start of her reign, and Elizabeth in turn helping him to retire with dignity and grace, cementing his legacy at the end of his career.Using previously unpublished material from government files and private archives, Churchill’s Queen sheds new light on this historic partnership, revealing how it grew despite challenges and setbacks – and ultimately shaped the monarchy and the nation.

Extreme Britain

Drawing on interviews with extremists, this timely study explores the relationship between gendered culture and political radicalism in a polarised Britain. Misogyny and ‘toxic masculinity’ are increasingly implicated in radicalisation. From the men’s incel (‘involuntary celibate’) movement online, to jihadist groups like Islamic State, to radical right ‘Free Speech’ protests —radicalisation spans ideologies. Though an often-used term, the process of radicalisation is not well understood, and the role of gender and masculinities has often been ignored. This book uses primary research among two of Britain’s key extremist movements: the banned Islamist group al-Muhajiroun, and those networked to it; and the anti-Islam radical right, including the English Defence League and Britain First, to reveal radicalisation as a masculinity project. Through interviews with leaders including Anjem Choudary, Jayda Fransen and Tommy Robinson, as well as their followers, Extreme Britain explores the emergence of extreme misogyny and masculinities. Pearson situates extreme identities in wider social norms, showing how masculinities are mobilised into action. The book cautions against oversimplifying extreme masculinity as ‘toxic’. It demonstrates how both men and women ‘do’ extreme masculinities and the costs and benefits to them both of activism. Understanding the men and women involved in extreme movements will better equip us to counter them. This fascinating study offers invaluable insight into some of their lives and motivations.
