Don't Let it Break You, Honey
*Longlisted for the 2026 Women's Prize for Non-Fiction*'Not simply a memoir. It is an indictment of failure at the highest levels of police, press and politics' Tom Watson'Intensely personal ... turning fear into bravery and pain into power' Cosmopolitan'A powerful memoir ... the astonishing story of her fight for justice' Guardian'Outstanding, revelatory journalism and gripping memoir ... brave, jaw-dropping, unputdownable' Ramita Navai'Stunning ... an extraordinary read, full of unimaginable courage and resilience ... wisdom, humility and humour' Julie Hesmondhalgh'Deeply human, captivating, exposing and honest ... a must-read' Gina Martin'There I was, working on a story with Jenny, without even suspecting she was the story' Nick Davies'Courageous and honest and disturbing - it will empower and deeply move and it will anger too' Robin Ince'There is deep tragedy here ... But this book is saved from bleakness by Evans's resilience and her practical, geekily obsessive approach to dealing with what happened to her' Hannah Lucinda Smith'Intensely moving ... vital, wise, passionate' Ol ParkerAs profiled in the Guardian and on Radio 4 Woman's HourCast in a cult film at the age of eighteen, Jenny Evans was on the cusp of something extraordinary; a route out of her hometown, a future of promise. But the new world she was exploring crumbled around her when she was assaulted at a party by a high-profile figure. Jenny reported this crime to the police when she became aware of other allegations of violence against The Famous Man. Shortly after doing so, details of what she had experienced were printed in a tabloid newspaper. Jenny trained as a journalist herself to try to find out how this happened. In the aftermath of devastation, she picked up the pieces and fought back against the systems that caused her harm. Her investigation helped expose the jaw-dropping press abuse and police corruption we now call the 'phone-hacking scandal'. Now training as a lawyer, Jenny is still working to fight for justice in a system that so horrifically fails its victims. Don't Let it Break You, Honey is a reckoning: a personal, fiercely compelling account of power - who holds it, who wields it, who is silenced in the process. It asks urgent questions about fame, justice, and the institutions we have no choice but to trust, while offering something even more profound: hope. Because this is, above all, a story about resilience. About finding your voice when the world wants to silence you. And refusing to let them win.

Plato's Politics of Passion
An original reading of three Platonic dialogues concerned with the soul, tyranny, self-knowledge, and the beautiful. Guided by the question "What is Socratic self-knowledge," this study begins with Plato's Charmides because it is within this work, more than any other, that the utility of self-knowledge becomes the predominant theme. In this dialogue, Socrates explores the possibility of the very culmination of his philosophical investigations—knowledge of ignorance. This happens through an investigation of the perplexing concept, sôphrosune. Alan Pichanick's approach offers a new perspective upon the perplexing exploration of sôphrosune in the Charmides by placing much greater emphasis on the neglected "erotic setting" in the dramatic introduction and argues that our reading of the rest of the dialogue should be done in light of this dramatic setting. The erotic setting of the Charmides combined with the discussion of philosophical wonder in the Symposium and tyrannical erôs in the Republic gives guidance about how to think about the potential connection between Socratic self-knowledge and knowledge of the good and also shows why the characters of Charmides and Critias fail to come to such knowledge. Here we have the Platonic diagnosis of the tyrant, whose soul never wonders at anything beyond itself.

Do Not Go Gentle
"Do Not Go Gentle is a bracing, often chilling wrestle with the ethical dilemmas surrounding the assisted death service - a deeply unsettling read, clear and powerful. Kathleen Stock remains fearless, endless, thought provoking and always entertaining." Nick Cave"Characteristically sharp, clever and vital," Jane O'Grady, The Daily Telegraph"Admirably clear and cogent... this is a polemic, but a polite one." Kathryn Hughes, The GuardianIs there a right to di? s assisted death really compassionat? re we sleepwalking into a moral disaste? n Do Not Go Gentle, acclaimed writer and philosopher Kathleen Stock tackles one of the great debates of our time: should we set up a system of assisted death? With her trademark sharp thinking and dry wit, the bestselling author of Material Girls argues that despite what some progressives might tell you, assisted death will not give a person more "freedom" or "control" over their lives. Whether you have a terminal illness, are in chronic pain, or are disabled, being able to ask your doctor to kill you fundamentally changes society's attitude towards the vulnerable - and in a sinister direction. Life is complex. For some individuals, an assisted death might be the right choice. But we should be deeply wary of introducing a system that offers death as just another option, especially when palliative care is so under-resourced. Expertly marshalling the arguments, Stock's laser polemic cuts through the wishful thinking and clouded reasoning that surrounds the issue and reaffirms life, rather than death, as what we should be fighting for. Collectively, we should rage against the dying of the light.
Broxy Kennels Fort, Souterrain and Surrounding Landscape, Perth
Archaeological excavation of almost the entirety of Broxy Kennels Fort to the north of Perth, was undertaken in advance of a new road development. It revealed a multivallate fortified settlement on a hill overlooking the River Tay. The fort constructed in the 6th century BC initially comprised two ditches that encircled the hill with a north-east entranceway that led to the interior. Around the late 5th-early 4th centuries BC, parts of the settlement’s defences were altered to accommodate a souterrain constructed into one of the silted-up ditches. The alteration necessitated a further short ditch either side of the entrance, followed by a final outer ditch that encircled the hill. Other changes within the enclosure may also have occurred at this time with material from clearance of structures being dumped in the ditches. After a short hiatus, an unenclosed settlement within the interior of the fort persisted from the 4th century BC until around the late 1st century AD. Other than traces of sporadic activity from the early medieval period to the post-medieval era, the site was to all intents and purposes lost to the plough.

The History of the Vertebrate
‘On 20 December 2015 I became a mother and I went mad.’On a single day, Mar García Puig gives birth to twins and becomes elected to the Spanish Parliament as a member of the insurgent left-wing party Podemos. What might have been the best day of her life becomes the start of a terrifying ordeal; García Puig’s grip on reality begins to slip as she grapples with uncertainty, the weight of expectation, and misogyny in both of her new roles. In defiance of a culture that tells her the problem lies within, García Puig chooses to look outwards, examining the imbrication of madness and motherhood across centuries of science, myth, and politics while dissecting the ways in which women have been pathologized and banished from public life. At once intimate and epic, The History of the Vertebrate is a searing account of postpartum madness. Moving between memory, culture, and the history of medicine, García Puig transforms her experience into a story about the countless women who have felt that sanity was leaving them, and about the patriarchal forces that have silenced them.

At his son's fifth birthday party, Joseph Maloney was alleged to have poisoned his wife. While awaiting trial in the psychiatric wing of a Rochester hospital, he escaped and vanished. Years later, a charming stranger calling himself Michael O'Shea surfaced in Dublin. Claiming roots in the west of Ireland, he married a local woman and sold his garage business to buy a grand country estate. For years he lived as a country gentleman and worked at the pinnacle of Ireland's film industry - until a US extradition treaty exposed his true identity. Arrested in 1985, Maloney escaped justice again when his trial collapsed on a technicality. He fled Ireland, leaving US and Irish investigators clueless as to his whereabouts - until an RTÉ Documentary on One podcast picked up his trail decades later. Runaway Joe is the story of a man who reinvented himself with chilling ease - a portrait of a remorseless manipulator whose acts left devastation across continents.
