Lost London

An engaging, beautifully illustrated history of London told through twenty-five lost buildingsLondon has been rebuilt and reshaped perhaps more than any other city over its two-millennia history. From the construction of the Underground to slum clearance and the Blitz, buildings have long been damaged or demolished to pave way for the new. Today, demolition is big business, and around 3500 buildings are destroyed each year, most of which are social housing. Paul Knox traces the history of London from the Great Fire to the present day through twenty-five lost buildings. Knox explores surprising and unusual locations in the city’s history, like the Necropolis Station in Waterloo used by funeral parties traveling to a burial ground in Surrey. We see historic landmarks, like Christ Church Greyfriars and the Crystal Palace, as well as everyday places like the White Horse pub in Poplar and a housing estate in Hackney. This is a fascinating study of London’s restless landscape, showing how conservation has changed over 400 years.

Lightship

Twenty years ago, Bruce Ackerley won Cinnamon Press’s inaugural poetry collection prize with his debut, Sound of Mountain, of which RV Bailey wrote: ‘finely crafted, lyrical and spare… with a musical ear for landscape and relationships. An interesting, individual voice, he writes with power and sensitivity.’In Lightship, Ackerley now brings together his finest writing from two decades, the voice confident and supple with a deepened lyricism and an acute sense of what to say, and what not to say, each poem is a honed gem—poised and resonant. Ranging across the natural and supernatural, the solace and joys of art, film and music, love, grief and sexuality, and the vicissitudes of mental health, Lightship is both an internal record and a reaching out. A moving, distinctive piece de résistance.

Forest Time

In his twenties, broke, brokenhearted, and fearful about the future, Jeremy Lloyd stumbled into a job that would change his life. More than two decades later, still an educator at Tremont in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Lloyd recounts his journey as a teacher and student of the great outdoors in Forest Time: Footnotes to an Outdoor Education. Blending natural history, daring—and sometimes foolish—adventure, and spiritual balm for a world suffering from widespread disconnection from nature, Forest Time is equal parts personal, educational, and existential. Lloyd's stories about his work as an educator at an overnight nature center are filled with humility and conviction, examining his relationships to the forests, mountains, and rivers he calls home.Wrestling with the intersections between the wild natural landscape, high-volume tourism, and the national park system, Lloyd's explorations are born from his extensive experience and personal relationship with the park. His voice and candor are as refreshing and distinctive as the natural environment he writes about, reminding readers that the mountains are not only national treasures but also a remedy for modernity's errors and a cultural malaise fixated on material gain and ultimate safety and comfort. Vulnerable, hilarious, and widely accessible, Forest Time fits appropriately on shelves beside the works of Edward Abbey, Annie Dillard, and Kevin Fedarko.

Civil War Camps and Soldier Health

An immersive analysis of camp life and soldiers’ well-being during the Civil WarThe Civil War was a watershed in public awareness of the many health-related issues soldiers faced while living in camps. Sanitarians among civilians and regular army officers attempted to meet those challenges by addressing a range of topics associated with preventive healthcare in the volunteer army. The US Sanitary Commission, a nongovernmental agency sanctioned by the Federal government, created a massive campaign to study conditions in semipermanent camps and advise unit commanders how to avoid unnecessary illness and curb soldier deaths by disease. Commission inspectors, mostly civilian physicians, examined camps from 1861 to early 1864 and filed more than 1,400 reports of their findings. Earl J. Hess delves deeply into 280 of those reports, shedding new and startling light on camp conditions. Addressing camp situation, shelter, clothing, personal cleanliness, garbage disposal, latrines, food, cooking, water, alcohol, morale, recruit examination, smallpox vaccination, regimental hospitals, and officer supervision, the camp inspection returns are unique snapshots of what it was like to live in a Union army camp. The reports reveal that sanitation varied widely from unit to unit and across time periods. Volunteer regimental officers and surgeons were often unable to take sanitary principles seriously, and disposing of garbage and human waste was often nonexistent. Overall, the volunteer regiments did well enough to get by, but they did not achieve high marks for military effectiveness when it came to preventive healthcare. Civil War Camps and Soldier Health is a thought-provoking, impeccably researched volume that enriches our understanding of the sanitation challenges facing the Union army camps as well as how these challenges were recorded and examined by early researchers.

A Good Morning for Giddo

When Somaya and her beloved Giddo (Arabic word for grandfather) make their weekly trip to the market, Somaya is impatient to get to the tentmaker’s stall; she needs help to complete a birthday surprise for Giddo, but Giddo prefers to take his time to visit his many friends. At first Somaya is frustrated by the delay, but soon she sees the importance of checking in on friends. Like Hajj Mohammed who sells shimmery pots of ink and is sad since his son moved to a faraway land. “Good morning with roses and jasmine,” Hajj Mohammed greets them before inviting Somaya to choose a pen; Somaya bleeds a special birthday message onto paper for Giddo while he and Hajj Mohammed answer the call to prayer. Next, they visit the jeweller. All around sparkling abalone fill baskets like treasure boxes. “Good morning of sweet cream, dearest Somaya,” Mariam says as she strings together a beautiful necklace. Giddo decides to stay for tea with Mariam’s father. Somaya loves listening to their chatter as the minty tea dazzles her tongue. At last, they reach the tentmaker’s stall. Sunlight splashes through the covered roof onto the rainbow of fabrics lining both sides of the narrow alleyway. As Giddo oohs and ahhs over Ammu Safwat’s new designs, Somaya heads straight for his apprentice to get help with the final flourish of her gift to Giddo. Finally, they are on their way home where Somaya and her parents surprise Giddo with a cake and Somaya’s special gift showing Giddo, the best tentmaker of them all, that she’s now a tentmaker too!

More Than Flower Power

Diane J. Purvis's memoir offers a unique view from the Los Angeles County suburbs as she was coming of age during the era of civil rights activism, the women's movement, and Vietnam anti-war movement. More than Flower Power recalls the youthful energy that surged in the 1960s as political and cultural tensions rose to the surface. Her parents, Midwest transplants to California, sought the postwar American dream and went from pinching pennies to living in upper middle-class suburbs, which were imbued with rigid social and political codes. Purvis rejected this conservative bias while attending racially integrated schools and witnessing the dichotomy between suburban and inner-city students, motivating her to embrace social justice. Purvis and her peers were influenced by images of the Vietnam War and political protests they saw on television and the music they heard on their transistor radios, two emerging technologies that shaped popular perceptions during this tumultuous decade. Purvis was possessed by the desire to make a difference even though inroads to social and political equality looked impossible in the face of America's cultural consensus and conformism of the era. Through the lens of one person's experience, More than Flower Power offers an intimate portrait of a West Coast generation's optimism, idealism, and transformative influence on American culture and society.

Self-Portrait as the "i" in Florida

". . . formally various and deliciously propulsive." —Kaveh AkbarA love letter to Miami and a meditation on fatherhood, Self-Portrait as the “i” in Florida paints a vivid picture of contemporary South Florida in all its contradictions and beauty. Selected by Major Jackson as the winner of the Donald Justice Poetry Prize, Cunningham’s second collection weaves together ecological and familial landscapes, capturing both the spectacle—burning sugarcane fields, snake farms, chaotic highways—and the daily rituals that bind a family: school drop-offs, sick days, and small kindnesses. Blending formalist and free verse, the book becomes both an inquiry into belonging and a celebration of the essential everyday moments that define a life. At once panoramic and deeply personal, Cunningham writes with a documentarian’s eye and a father’s heart.

The Desecration of Man

From Christian theologian and historian Carl Trueman, an argument that a blasphemous rejection of Christian anthropology drives the social ills of our time.As church attendance falls, suicide rates climb, and birth rates plummet, Christian pundits have suggested disenchantment and the loss of tradition are to blame for our spiritual malaise. But what if the problem is both much simpler and much more serious? In Desecration of Man, theologian and ecclesial historian Carl Trueman argues that modern man''s crisis of meaning stems from a rejection of a simple fact ? that he was made in the image of God. Unmoored from the basic moral fact that secures human dignity, we violently disrespect our own minds and bodies through abortion, pornography, casual sex, gender transitions, and more--and in this disrespect we blaspheme against God himself, with devastating practical and spiritual consequences. With gentle pastoral wisdom, deep insight into church history, and an impressive command of philosophical geneologies, The Desecration of Man speaks to those troubled by the spiritual sickness of our time and points toward consecration to a God who is alive and loving as a solution. The Early Church triumphed over Rome because it offered life in place of death. It is time for modern Christians to offer the same kind of vision.
